Chapter 21 - THE RIVER ROAD

The missing vehicle belonged to Maeve.

She had Brinley.

Isla.

And Sully.

No response.

Renick drove.

Belle, Owen, and Micah followed despite every instruction Naomi gave.

The vehicle was found on River Road.

Driver’s door open.

Blood on the seat.

No bodies.

Tracks led toward an abandoned boathouse.

Renick entered first.

Belle heard voices.

Callum.

He had escaped hospital custody.

Again.

Belle wondered whether federal detention in Massachusetts used doors.

Callum stood with Maeve.

Gun against her side.

Sully lay injured.

Brinley and Isla huddled behind a boat.

Renick raised his weapon.

Callum smiled.

“All the daughters.”

Belle stepped inside.

“And one sister you forgot.”

Callum looked at her.

“Cormac’s mistake.”

Belle smiled without humor.

“I’ve heard worse.”

Owen entered from the opposite door.

Callum’s eyes shifted.

Maeve reacted.

She drove her elbow backward.

Gunfire exploded.

Renick shot Callum.

Owen pulled the children down.

Belle reached Maeve.

Sully tried to stand.

Callum fell against the boat.

Alive.

Bleeding.

He looked at Renick.

“You’ll never clean the name.”

Renick lowered his weapon.

“I’m not trying to.”

Naomi’s team arrived.

This time Callum left in restraints, surrounded by enough agents that Belle almost felt sorry for the paperwork.

Outside, Brinley ran to Renick.

Isla stood awkwardly.

Renick opened his other arm.

After a second, Isla joined.

Belle watched him hold both daughters.

Micah stood beside Owen.

Then slipped his hand into his father’s.

Owen looked down.

His face broke.

Belle looked away to give him that moment.

Sully survived.

Maeve forgave him slowly.

Not in one speech.

Not magically.

But she began visiting his hospital room.

Sometimes she yelled.

Sometimes they played cards.

That seemed more honest.

Patrick accepted a plea deal.

Declan cooperated with federal investigators.

Jacob Vale died in prison two years later.

Callum received life.

The ledger dismantled businesses, careers, political alliances, and several criminal networks across three states.

Renick surrendered parts of the organization.

Legitimate companies remained.

Illegal operations dissolved.

Not cleanly.

Not peacefully.

But enough.

Belle did not become rich overnight.

She refused most trust distributions.

She accepted one thing.

Micah’s education fund.

And the deed to the apartment building.

Because, as she told Renick, “If you ever raise my rent, I’m exposing your childhood photos.”

Renick replied, “You wouldn’t.”

Maeve gave Belle the photos.

Family improved him.

Owen did not move home.

Not immediately.

He rented the apartment upstairs.

For six months.

He took Micah to school.

Cooked terrible pancakes.

Went to therapy.

Answered questions.

Belle made him earn every ordinary moment.

One night, almost a year after the balcony, she found him fixing the kitchen sink.

“You still use too much soap,” she said.

He looked at her.

“You remembered.”

“I remember everything.”

“That sounds threatening.”

“It is.”

He smiled.

She kissed him.

Not forgiveness.

May you like

Not yet.

But possibility.
