Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE NO PARENT MAKES

Belle called Micah.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

She called the guard.

Nothing.

Renick called the security chief.

Nothing.

Owen drove.

Too fast.

Renick did not tell him to slow down.

Isla stayed with Thomas under state police protection arranged through an old contact of Owen’s.

Belle hated leaving her.

Renick hated it too.

But two other children were in immediate danger.

The coastal house came into view just after sunrise.

Front door open.

One SUV gone.

Belle ran inside.

“Micah!”

Silence.

“Brinley!”

Renick went upstairs.

Owen checked the kitchen.

Belle found blood in the hallway.

A guard lay near the security room.

Alive.

Pulse weak.

The room itself was empty.

Belle screamed Micah’s name.

Renick returned holding Brinley’s rabbit.

His face was gray.

On the wall, written in black marker:

PIER 19.

NO POLICE.

BRING OWEN.

Belle turned.

“Why Owen?”

Owen stared at the message.

“Because I know the vault.”

Renick said, “And because Callum wants you dead.”

Owen nodded.

Belle grabbed his shirt.

“No.”

“Belle.”

“No. We are not walking into whatever this is.”

“Our son is there.”

“I know!”

Her voice broke.

Renick looked away.

Belle pressed her forehead against Owen’s chest.

For seven years she had wanted him alive.

Now she had him back for hours and might lose him again.

“This is what you did,” she whispered.

“What?”

“You decided alone.”

Owen closed his eyes.

“You decided disappearing was worth it because it kept us safe. You don’t get to decide alone again.”

“I won’t.”

“Promise.”

“I promise.”

Renick said, “We need a plan.”

Belle laughed bitterly.

“Finally.”

They contacted federal agent Naomi Vance.

Owen had worked with her secretly for years.

She knew parts of the Kavanaugh operation.

She did not trust Renick.

He did not trust her.

That seemed useful.

Naomi assembled a covert team outside Pier 19.

No marked vehicles.

No sirens.

Renick wore a wire.

Owen carried a decoy ledger.

Belle was supposed to remain in the command vehicle.

She did not.

Renick noticed her climbing out.

“No.”

Belle looked at him.

“Don’t start.”

“They asked for Owen.”

“And kidnapped my son.”

“Which is why you stay alive for him.”

Belle stared.

That stopped her.

Owen touched her shoulder.

“He’s right.”

She hated both men.

But she stayed.

Inside the pier warehouse, Renick and Owen walked alone.

Naomi tracked audio.

Belle listened through headphones.

Footsteps.

Metal doors.

Water beneath the pier.

Then a voice.

Callum Vale.

“Renick.”

Renick answered.

“Where are the children?”

“Safe.”

“Show me.”

“Ledger.”

Owen spoke.

“Children first.”

Callum laughed.

“You spent seven years hiding, Ashford. Still pretending you negotiate.”

Belle gripped the edge of the table.

A video feed appeared.

Brinley sat tied to a chair.

Micah beside her.

They looked scared.

Alive.

Belle started crying.

Naomi said, “Visual confirmed.”

Renick’s voice came through.

“Release them.”

Callum answered.

“You brought the book?”

“Yes.”

“Put it down.”

Owen did.

“Now Micah.”

Callum laughed.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“You said Micah first.”

Silence.

Belle’s stomach twisted.

Callum continued.

“Not your daughter.”

Renick said, “They’re both children.”

“Still sentimental.”

“Still a coward.”

A gunshot.

Belle screamed.

The audio exploded with shouting.

Naomi ordered teams forward.

Belle ripped off the headphones.

“Who was shot?”

“No confirmation.”

She ran.

Naomi caught her.

“Belle!”

“That’s my child!”

Agents breached the warehouse.

Belle followed despite orders.

Inside, smoke filled the central floor.

Renick lay behind a crate.

Blood on his arm.

Alive.

Owen was gone.

Callum gone.

Children gone.

A trapdoor stood open.

“Tunnel!” an agent shouted.

Belle ran down.

Old customs passage beneath the pier.

Water dripped.

Ahead, footsteps.

She heard Micah crying.

“Mom!”

Belle ran faster.

The tunnel opened into the old vault.

Callum stood with a gun.

Micah in front of him.

Brinley beside Patrick Kavanaugh.

Belle stopped.

Patrick smiled.

He looked like Renick but softer.

That made him worse.

“Mrs. Ashford.”

“Let them go.”

Patrick shook his head.

“Where’s Owen?”

“Behind me.”

A lie.

Callum glanced toward the tunnel.

Belle saw his distraction.

Micah did too.

Her son stomped Callum’s foot.

Callum cursed.

Belle lunged.

The gun fired.

Patrick shouted.

Brinley dropped.

Belle hit Callum with everything she had.

They fell.

The weapon slid away.

Micah grabbed it.

Belle’s heart stopped.

“Micah, no!”

He stood holding the gun with both hands.

Callum froze.

The boy’s arms shook.

Belle crawled toward him.

“Put it down.”

“He’ll hurt you.”

“I know.”

“He’ll hurt Brinley.”

“Micah.”

She looked into her son’s terrified eyes.

“You save people by staying yourself.”

His face crumpled.

He lowered the gun.

Callum lunged.

A shot exploded.

Callum fell.

Owen stood behind him.

Gun raised.

Belle stared.

Owen looked at Micah.

“You did the right thing.”

Federal agents flooded the vault.

Patrick tried to escape.

Renick tackled him at the tunnel entrance.

The two brothers crashed against the stone.

Naomi’s team arrested Patrick.

Callum was alive.

Shot in the shoulder.

Brinley was unharmed.

The earlier bullet had struck a pipe.

Belle held both children.

Then she looked around.

“Where’s the ledger?”

Owen pointed toward the vault wall.

A steel compartment stood open.

Empty.

Renick stared.

Callum laughed from the floor.

“You still don’t understand.”

Renick walked toward him.

Callum smiled through blood.

“The ledger was never here.”

Owen’s face changed.

May you like

Callum looked directly at Belle.

“It’s been inside your apartment for seven years.”
