Chapter 13 - THE FAMILY I NEVER WANTED

Everyone expected me to choose Jason.

He was the only Bennett who hadn't been arrested.

The only one who hadn't disappeared.

The only one still claiming he loved me.

But I couldn't.

Not yet.

We sat in a conference room surrounded by lawyers.

The original trust document lay on the table.

My name was written across the top.

I read the clause again.

“The beneficiary may appoint one living member of the Bennett family.”

Jason looked at me.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

“You knew.”

“I know.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You let Mom and Dad manipulate me.”

“Yes.”

“Why should I trust you?”

He looked down.

“Because I want to fix it.”

I almost laughed.

“Some things can't be fixed.”

“I know.”

He took a breath.

“But maybe they can be answered for.”

He pulled a folder from his bag.

Inside were financial records.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Audio recordings.

Everything.

“You've been collecting this?”

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew Dad would eventually destroy us.”

He handed me another document.

It was signed by my father.

A confession.

My father admitted stealing the money.

He admitted manipulating my marriage.

He admitted ordering the staged death of Jonathan.

He admitted trying to frame Alexander.

And at the bottom was one sentence:

Claire was the only person I never intended to lose.

I cried.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I finally understood something.

My father had loved me.

Badly.

Possessively.

Destructively.

But his version of love had still been love.

And I didn't have to accept it.

I chose Jason as trustee.

Not because I trusted him completely.

Because he was willing to spend the rest of his life earning it.

The trust was secured.

The money was recovered.

Daniel was charged.

Michael was charged.

My father faced federal prosecution.

My mother agreed to testify.

Jonathan began rebuilding his life.

And Alexander?

He came home with me.

One evening, we sat on the balcony.

The city lights stretched beneath us.

I looked at my wedding ring.

“Do you ever wish we'd just gone to City Hall?”

He laughed.

“Every other Tuesday.”

I smiled.

“Seriously.”

He took my hand.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because that wedding gave me you.”

I leaned against him.

Then my phone buzzed.

An email.

Subject:

YOUR WEDDING WASN'T THE END.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My wedding.

The photograph had been taken from inside the building.

Behind me stood a man I had never noticed.

A man wearing a security uniform.

Under the photograph:

I WAS THERE.

And beneath that:

ASK ALEXANDER WHO HIRED ME.

I looked at my husband.

His face changed.

“Claire…”

“You know him?”

He didn't answer.

May you like

And I realized our story wasn't over.
