Chapter 11 - THE BROTHER WHO VANISHED

Jonathan's phone was found in the parking garage.
His car was still there.
The engine was running.
The driver's door was open.
His blood was on the seat.
Alexander nearly lost control.
He wanted to tear the city apart.
I stopped him.
“We need to think.”
“He's my brother.”
“I know.”
“They took him once.”
“They won't take him again.”
We followed the only clue.
A message from Jonathan's phone.
One word:
WAREHOUSE.
The same warehouse where Victor had been shot.
We went there.
The place smelled exactly as it had in the video.
Old oil.
Wet concrete.
Rust.
Then we heard a voice.
“Claire.”
Daniel stepped from the darkness.
I recognized him immediately.
He had been my father's attorney since I was a child.
A man who had attended my birthday parties.
My graduations.
My father's dinners.
He smiled.
“You finally understand.”
“Where is Jonathan?”
“Alive.”
“Bring him out.”
Daniel laughed.
“You sound like your father.”
“I am nothing like him.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That's why you were always dangerous.”
He revealed Jonathan.
He was tied to a chair.
Alive.
Bruised.
Alexander moved forward.
Daniel raised a gun.
“Another step and he dies.”
I stopped Alexander.
Daniel looked at me.
“You triggered the trust.”
“Undo it.”
“I can't.”
“You can.”
He smiled.
“Not without you.”
“What do you want?”
“Your signature.”
“On what?”
“An amendment.”
I looked at the document.
It transferred every Blackwell asset to Daniel.
“No.”
Daniel pointed the gun at Jonathan.
“Sign.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“Don't.”
I looked at him.
Then at Alexander.
Then at the document.
I picked up the pen.
Daniel smiled.
But before I signed, I noticed something.
A tiny red light.
Recording.
Daniel's gun was fitted with a camera.
And there was another camera behind him.
I smiled.
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“You made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You kept talking.”
The warehouse doors exploded open.
Police rushed inside.
Daniel spun.
Alexander tackled him.
Jonathan fell sideways.
I ran to him.
Police officers surrounded Daniel.
He screamed.
“You don't understand!”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You don't understand.”
Daniel was arrested.
Jonathan was taken to the hospital.
But before he was loaded into the ambulance, he grabbed my hand.
“Claire.”
“What?”
“There is one more person.”
“Who?”
He looked at Alexander.
“Someone inside the Blackwell company.”
“Who?”
Jonathan whispered:
“Your brother.”
My heart stopped.
“Jason?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Alexander's younger brother.”
I froze.
“You have another brother?”
Alexander stared at Jonathan.
“That isn't possible.”
Jonathan nodded.
May you like
“He was never dead.”
