Chapter 13 - THE HIDDEN HEIRThe hearing dissolved into shouting.

Ruth stood motionless, one hand pressed against her chest.
Richard stared at his father.
Angela Carter had been Richard’s half sister.
Mia was his niece.
Thomas seemed to enjoy the chaos.
“Angela’s mother worked in my first office,” he explained. “The relationship was brief and inconvenient.”
“Inconvenient?” Ruth said.
“She chose to raise the child independently.”
“You paid her to disappear.”
“I provided support.”
“You made her sign papers saying Angela could never contact the Harrison family.”
Thomas’s expression showed faint surprise.
“You knew?”
“Angela’s mother told me before she died.”
Richard looked at Ruth.
“You knew Angela was my sister?”
“I knew Thomas was her biological father. Angela wanted nothing from him.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your family destroyed her without knowing her blood. I could not imagine what you would do if you knew.”
Mia looked from Richard to Thomas.
“Does that make Richard my uncle?”
No one answered immediately.
Ethan spoke from the front row, where Dr. Morales had allowed him to observe with medical support.
“Yes.”
Mia looked at Richard.
“You’re Ethan’s dad.”
“Yes.”
“And my mom was your sister.”
“Yes.”
“Then Ethan is my cousin.”
Ethan smiled.
“I knew we were supposed to be friends.”
The simple declaration broke through the horror of the revelation.
Thomas watched them without warmth.
“Blood has always made people irrational.”
Richard moved closer to his father.
“Did you know Angela was reporting the defects?”
“Of course.”
“You fired your own daughter.”
“She refused discretion.”
“You ordered her killed?”
Thomas’s electronic voice remained flat.
“I told Victor to recover company property.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer you will receive.”
Federal agents escorted Thomas from the chamber.
Before he disappeared, he looked back at Mia.
“You have inherited more than courage, child. Angela’s ownership claim may be worth billions.”
The statement created a new kind of chaos.
Reporters shouted questions.
Financial networks immediately speculated about secret inheritance trusts.
By evening, Mia’s face appeared beside numbers she could not read.
$3.2 BILLION?
THE POOR HERO WHO MAY OWN A FORTUNE.
HARRISON’S SECRET GRANDDAUGHTER.
Ruth turned off the television.
“This is exactly what Angela feared.”
Richard’s attorneys discovered that Thomas had established a trust after Angela’s birth. The trust contained early shares of Harrison Technologies.
Thomas later attempted to cancel it, but the documents were legally flawed.
If upheld, Mia could own a significant portion of Harrison Global.
Ruth wanted nothing to do with it.
“That money has blood on it.”
Richard understood.
“It can also compensate the families.”
“The families deserve justice from the company, not charity from a child.”
“It belongs to Mia.”
“Mia needs a home and a school. She does not need people fighting over billions.”
Someone was already fighting.
A petition arrived challenging Ruth’s right to serve as Mia’s guardian. The filer claimed that Ruth had concealed Angela’s parentage and mismanaged a valuable inheritance.
The attorney behind the petition represented an unknown relative.
The relative was Thomas Harrison.
“He wants control of her trust,” Richard said.
Ruth laughed in disbelief.
“He pretended to be dead for twelve years, and now he wants custody?”
“He does not want custody. He wants leverage.”
The court scheduled an emergency guardianship hearing.
Thomas appeared by secure video from federal detention.
His lawyers argued that Ruth’s poverty, shelter residence, and employment instability made her unsuitable to manage Mia’s potential fortune.
Ruth’s attorney responded that Thomas was under criminal investigation for conspiracy and fraud.
Then Thomas’s team presented a document signed by Angela.
It named Thomas as Mia’s successor guardian if Ruth became unable to provide stable housing.
Ruth stared at the signature.
“She would never sign that.”
A handwriting expert claimed it was authentic.
Richard recognized the strategy.
Thomas did not need to win permanently.
He only needed to create confusion long enough to freeze Mia’s rights and silence public disclosures.
The judge asked Mia where she wanted to live.
“With Grandma.”
“Do you understand that your grandfather may be able to provide a large home, private education, and medical care?”
Mia looked toward the screen.
“He had all those things when my mom needed him.”
Thomas’s mouth tightened.
The judge suppressed a smile.
“What about Mr. Richard Harrison?”
Mia looked at Richard.
“He has a big apartment.”
Several people laughed softly.
“Would you feel safe with him?”
“Yes.”
“Would you choose him instead of your grandmother?”
“No.”
Richard was not offended.
He was proud.
The judge rejected Thomas’s request and restored Ruth’s full guardianship. Richard was appointed temporary co-trustee solely for asset protection, subject to independent oversight.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded them.
One journalist shouted, “Mia, how does it feel to be one of the richest children in America?”
Mia held Ruth’s hand.
“I still have the same backpack.”
The line went viral within minutes.
That night, Richard arranged a quiet dinner at Ethan’s home.
Mia explored the accessible playroom while Ruth spoke with attorneys.
Ethan showed her a robotic arm controlled by eye movements.
“I can pick things up with it.”
He moved the device toward a wooden block.
Mia clapped when the mechanical fingers closed.
“You built that?”
“My dad’s engineers did.”
“You told them what was wrong?”
“Yes.”
“Then you helped build it.”
Ethan smiled.
Richard watched from the doorway.
For the first time since Natalie’s death, the house contained children’s laughter.
Then the lights went out.
Security alarms failed simultaneously.
A voice came through the darkened speaker system.
Thomas Harrison’s electronic tone filled the house.
“Richard, you have taken my company and my granddaughter.”
Emergency lights flickered on.
May you like
A red laser dot appeared against Richard’s chest.
“You will not take my legacy.”
