Chapter 1 - THE CALL TO THE PALACE

Claire Bennett did not sleep that night.

She lay beneath the thin comforter in her bedroom, staring at the faint strip of streetlight cutting across the ceiling while the same four words repeated in her mind.

His Majesty his daughter.

Not ambassador.

Not minister.

Not prince.

His Majesty.

At 2:17 a.m., Claire finally pushed back the covers.

Their apartment was silent except for the old refrigerator humming in the kitchen. She stepped into the hallway barefoot and noticed a line of light beneath her mother’s bedroom door.

Claire moved closer.

Evelyn was still awake.

She was speaking quietly on the phone again, but this time in English.

“No. She cannot know everything yet.”

A pause.

“I understand what the council advised.”

Another pause.

“No, Tomas. I don’t care what the council wants. She is my daughter before she is anyone’s heir.”

Claire’s hand froze against the wall.

Heir?

Her mother continued.

“After tonight, Richard Whitmore may start asking questions. He recognized me.”

Claire nearly gasped.

Richard knew her mother?

“I saw it in his face,” Evelyn said. “He remembers Madrid.”

Claire accidentally shifted her weight.

The floorboard creaked.

Silence.

The bedroom door opened immediately.

Evelyn stood there wearing her robe, the phone still in her hand.

Mother and daughter stared at each other.

Claire did not apologize.

“Who am I heir to?”

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“Go back to bed.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“You said Richard Whitmore recognized you.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Claire stepped closer.

“You said Madrid.”

Still nothing.

“You told someone I’m an heir.”

Evelyn looked down at the phone and ended the call.

Then she walked into the kitchen.

“Sit.”

Claire followed.

Her mother took an old metal tea tin from the cabinet above the refrigerator.

Claire had seen it a thousand times.

It had never contained tea.

Evelyn placed it on the table.

Inside were several photographs, a velvet pouch, an expired European passport, and a folded newspaper clipping.

Claire reached for the first photograph.

Her breath caught.

Her mother looked no older than twenty-five.

She was standing on the balcony of an enormous white palace beside a tall man in military uniform.

Claire stared at him.

The man had dark hair, severe cheekbones, and unmistakably blue-gray eyes.

Claire’s eyes.

On his uniform were rows of medals.

Behind them hung a crimson banner bearing a golden lion.

Claire turned the photograph over.

A date was written on the back.

Valedria — 2008.

“Where is Valedria?”

“A small constitutional kingdom on the Mediterranean coast,” Evelyn said.

Claire looked up.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

“That was intentional.”

Evelyn unfolded the newspaper clipping.

The headline was in English.

CROWN PRINCE ADRIAN ESCAPES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT — FIANCÉE REPORTED MISSING

Claire felt the room tilt.

The photograph in the article showed the same man.

Except the caption beneath it read:

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Adrian Nikolai Laurent of Valedria.

Claire slowly put the paper down.

“No.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“No.”

Claire pushed away from the table.

“This is insane.”

“I know.”

“You’re saying…”

Her throat closed.

“You’re saying my father is a prince?”

Evelyn’s eyes met hers.

“He was.”

Claire stared at her.

Evelyn swallowed.

“His father died twelve years ago.”

Claire’s pulse hammered.

“So now he’s—”

“King Adrian IV.”

Claire laughed once.

It was not amusement.

It was disbelief so violent it had nowhere else to go.

“My father is a king?”

“Yes.”

“And you thought maybe that was something I should learn after calculus?”

“Claire—”

“Seventeen years!”

She stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.

“For seventeen years, I thought he didn’t want me!”

“I never told you that.”

“You let me believe it!”

“Because believing he abandoned you was safer than knowing who he was.”

Claire stopped.

Evelyn pushed the velvet pouch toward her.

Inside was a small gold medallion.

A crowned lion on one side.

A baby’s initials on the other.

C.A.L.

Claire touched the engraving.

“What does the L stand for?”

“Laurent.”

“My name is Bennett.”

“For protection.”

Claire shook her head.

“Protection from what?”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“The people who tried to murder your father before you were born.”

The kitchen suddenly seemed colder.

Evelyn told her everything she could.

She had met Adrian Laurent while working in Europe after college. She had not known who he was during their first weeks together because Adrian had been traveling unofficially under another name.

By the time Evelyn learned the truth, she was already in love with him.

They became secretly engaged.

Then the old king announced Adrian would soon marry the daughter of a neighboring royal family.

Adrian publicly refused.

The political fallout was immediate.

A faction inside Valedria’s aristocracy feared Evelyn would weaken their influence over the future king.

Two weeks later, Adrian’s convoy exploded outside Madrid.

Three guards died.

Adrian survived.

Evelyn had already discovered she was pregnant.

Then someone broke into her apartment.

Nothing valuable was taken.

But a photograph of her ultrasound had been placed neatly in the center of her kitchen table.

A knife lay across it.

Claire stopped breathing.

“They knew about me?”

“They suspected.”

“So you ran.”

“With Adrian’s help.”

Claire stared at her mother.

“He helped you disappear?”

“He begged me to.”

Adrian had arranged new documents, money, and security channels.

Evelyn chose Chicago.

She refused royal money beyond what was necessary to establish a safe life.

She wanted Claire raised normally.

No palace.

No bodyguards standing outside kindergarten.

No newspapers ranking her dresses.

No ministers deciding who she could marry.

“Then why didn’t he visit?”

“He did.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“What?”

“From a distance.”

“That doesn’t count.”

“I know.”

“He could have knocked on the door.”

“He nearly did.”

“When?”

“Your eighth birthday.”

Claire remembered that birthday.

A small apartment.

Chocolate cake.

Her mother crying mysteriously after Claire went to bed.

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“He sat inside a car across the street for three hours.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because that week intelligence officers intercepted a message discussing the ‘American child.’ Adrian left the country that night.”

Claire looked at the photograph again.

She wanted to hate the man.

It would have been simpler.

But now the empty chair from Blackwood Academy haunted her for a completely different reason.

“What changed tonight?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“You.”

“Me?”

“You turned seventeen last month.”

“So?”

“In Valedria, seventeen is when a royal heir may legally be acknowledged before the Privy Council.”

Claire’s fingers went cold.

“Heir?”

“Adrian never married.”

Claire stared at her.

“He has no other children.”

Silence expanded through the kitchen.

Claire whispered, “You’re saying I’m next?”

“If your identity is formally recognized.”

Claire sat down again.

A scholarship student from Lake Forest who altered thrift-store dresses with her mother.

Next in line to a throne.

It sounded ridiculous.

Then Claire remembered Richard Whitmore’s expression.

“You said Richard recognized you from Madrid.”

Evelyn nodded.

“What was he doing there?”

Her mother’s jaw tightened.

“Business.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“Richard Whitmore’s fortune did not begin with American real estate.”

Claire waited.

“He worked for an international development consortium twenty years ago. One of its largest contracts was in Valedria.”

Claire felt unease crawl over her skin.

“And?”

“And the consortium was linked to several men investigated after the attack on Adrian.”

Claire stood completely still.

“You think Richard tried to kill my father?”

“I think Richard knows more than he has ever admitted.”

Suddenly Vanessa’s cruelty felt less random.

The scholarship.

The board chairman.

Claire attending the very school Richard controlled.

“How did I end up at Blackwood?”

Evelyn looked almost ashamed.

“You earned admission.”

“But the scholarship?”

Evelyn hesitated too long.

Claire understood.

“No.”

“Claire—”

“Did Richard arrange it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You said he recognized you!”

“I did not realize he was connected to the school until after your first year.”

“Why didn’t you pull me out?”

“Because disappearing suddenly could have made him suspicious.”

Claire covered her face.

Her entire life seemed built on hidden doors.

Then someone knocked.

Three soft knocks.

Pause.

Two knocks.

Evelyn froze.

Her chair moved backward.

“Stay here.”

She approached the door.

“Who is it?”

A man answered.

“Saint Michael still guards the eastern gate.”

Evelyn unlocked three locks.

A tall man in a dark coat entered.

He was perhaps sixty.

Silver-haired.

Straight-backed.

A scar crossed his left eyebrow.

He looked at Evelyn first.

Then at Claire.

And something inside his face broke.

He bowed.

Not politely.

Deeply.

Claire stepped backward.

The man straightened.

“My name is Tomas Varga.”

Claire remembered the phone call.

“Tomas.”

“Yes, Your Royal Highness.”

“Don’t call me that.”

His mouth almost smiled.

“You sound like your father.”

Claire crossed her arms.

“Where is he?”

Tomas looked toward Evelyn.

She nodded.

“He departed Valedria forty minutes ago.”

Claire’s heart stumbled.

“What?”

“His aircraft is already over the Atlantic.”

Claire stared at him.

“Why?”

Tomas removed an envelope from his coat.

On the front was the crowned lion.

“Because His Majesty was informed of what happened tonight.”

Claire remembered Vanessa dragging the empty chair.

The laughter.

Richard Whitmore threatening her scholarship.

Her cheeks burned again.

“What exactly was he told?”

Tomas’s expression became unreadable.

“Everything.”

Claire opened the envelope.

The message contained only two handwritten lines.

My dearest Claire,

Forgive me for missing seventeen years. I will not miss one more night when you need your father.

Her vision blurred.

Beneath the message was a signature.

Adrian.

And underneath that:

Your father.

Claire looked up.

“When will he get here?”

Tomas checked his watch.

“If air traffic cooperates, tomorrow afternoon.”

Evelyn frowned.

“That soon?”

“He rejected the diplomatic schedule.”

“Of course he did.”

“He also rejected the discreet arrival.”

Evelyn went still.

“What did he request?”

Tomas looked directly at Claire.

“Full state protocol.”

Claire blinked.

“I don’t understand.”

“He intends to make his presence impossible to misunderstand.”

Tomas paused.

“And there is one more matter.”

He pulled a black folder from his coat.

Inside was a printed invitation.

BLACKWOOD ACADEMY LEGACY GALA

Three weeks away.

Claire stared at it.

Then at him.

“No.”

Tomas’s expression remained perfectly serious.

“Yes.”

Evelyn groaned quietly.

Claire suddenly understood.

“He wants to attend?”

“His exact words were somewhat stronger.”

“What did he say?”

May you like

For the first time, Tomas smiled.

“He said, ‘Tell Blackwood Academy to keep the chair.’”
