Chapter 8 - Out of the Ashes

The heavy steel door of the server room suddenly groaned as a hydraulic cutter began to tear through the lock from the outside. Bright yellow sparks showered into the dark room.
"Caleb, they’re coming through," Lily whispered, her heart racing as she helped him stand up.
Caleb looked around the dark room, his tactical mind still working despite the intense pain in his shoulder. He pointed to a small ventilation shaft near the ceiling of the back wall.
"The exhaust," he whispered, his gravelly voice filled with a desperate urgency. "It leads to the surface alleyway. Go, Lily. I’ll hold them."
"No!" Lily said, her voice cracking with an absolute, unyielding fury. She stood in front of him, her petite frame shielding his larger body from the door. "We are not doing this anymore, Caleb! I am not leaving you, and you are not sacrificing yourself for me! We survived Room 12, we survived the fog, and we are surviving this!"
She reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against the cold silver card and the wooden sparrow. She took a deep breath, her eyes flashing with a sudden, brilliant realization.
"Director Hayes!" Lily shouted toward the sparking door. "Stop cutting the door! The database is gone! The EMP has completely vaporized the source code! The chip in Caleb’s shoulder is fried! If you kill us, you get nothing! But if you let us go, we have the physical logs of Dr. Vance’s private archives—logs that prove Apex Solutions’ illegal funding of the Blackstone program! We have them set to auto-release to every major news outlet in the country in exactly ten minutes!"
The sparking from the door suddenly stopped.
The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating.
A moment later, the door creaked open, revealing Director Hayes standing in the opening, his face dark with a cold, calculating fury. He looked at the smoking, dead server racks, then looked at Lily, searching her eyes for any sign of a bluff.
Lily stood her ground, her head held high, her chest heaving, her hand clutched tightly around her pocketed notebook. She looked every bit the Head Nurse of the high-security ward—a woman who had faced down violent, broken men and never flinched.
"You’re bluffing," Hayes sneered, his hand reaching slowly toward the holster beneath his jacket.
"Try me," Lily said, her voice as cold as ice. "I spent six months clearing Caleb's name through legal channels, Hayes. You think I didn't set up a failsafe? I am a medical professional. I don't take risks with my patients' lives."
Hayes stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. The silence was deafening, the only sound the dripping of water from the ceiling pipes. Slowly, Hayes’s hand moved away from his holster. He realized the game was over. The asset was dead; the data was gone; and the potential political fallout of a public exposure was a risk his board of directors would never allow him to take.
"You’ve made a very dangerous enemy, Nurse Parker," Hayes whispered, his voice dripping with venom.

"I’ve had worse," Lily replied. "Now get out of our way."
With a final, bitter look, Hayes turned and walked back up the stairs, his mercenaries following close behind him, leaving the two survivors alone in the quiet, smoking ruins.
