Chapter 21 - The Dawn of Our Days
The summer of 2031 arrived with a brilliant, golden warmth that made Lake Michigan look like a sheet of blue diamonds.
It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in late July. The lakeside cottage in Traverse City was transformed into a paradise of celebration. Strings of warm, glowing fairy lights stretched between the grand oak trees, and the air was filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming roses, fresh lavender, and delicious food.
Today was a special day. It was Leo’s thirteenth birthday—his first official birthday as an teenager, and his second as an officially adopted Jenkins.
Over fifty guests, including Detective Vance, Marcus, Dr. Alcott, and their close friends from the local community, filled the vibrant green lawns, laughing and chatting in the warm summer air.
Sarah stood on the wide wooden deck of the cottage, a glass of fresh lemonade in her hand, watching the scene below. She wore a simple, beautiful cream-colored sundress, her dark hair blowing softly in the warm sea wind. She looked happy—entirely free of fear, her steps light and steady.
Leo stood near the dock, dressed in a sharp blue polo shirt, his shoulders broad, his face healthy and tan from a summer spent swimming in the lake. His right arm was resting comfortably at his side, his fingers relaxed and strong as he threw a tennis ball for Barnaby, who was chasing it with a furious, clumsy joy.
"He’s happy, Sarah," Marcus whispered, stepping onto the deck beside her, his hand gently resting on her shoulder.
"He is," Sarah smiled, her eyes shining with happiness. "And so am I."

Leo turned from the dock, his gray eyes catching hers across the lawn. A bright, warm, beautiful smile broke across his face, and he waved his hand, inviting her down to the water.
Sarah walked down the wooden steps, her heart full, her steps light, knowing that the rescue was finally complete, the dark was gone, and their beautiful, unbreakable life had arrived to stay for the rest of their days.
