Chapter 3 - The Echo of Whispers

The basement of the Duca estate did not smell like lemon oil or warm bread.

It smelled of damp limestone. Of old iron. Of fear.

Alessandro stood in the center of the subterranean holding room. The single bulb overhead swayed slightly, casting long, erratic shadows across the wet concrete floor. In the corner, Clara sat chained to a heavy wooden chair. Her maid’s uniform was stained with sweat. Her eyes were swollen, wide with the stark, terrifying realization of what she had done.

And what she was about to lose.

"Who?" Alessandro asked.

His voice was not loud. It was a low, vibrating hum that seemed to rattle the very walls. He didn't pace. He didn't scream. He simply stood there, an immovable monolith of quiet fury.

"I... I don't know his name," Clara sobbed, her voice cracking. "I swear to you, Don Alessandro! He met me in the market. He had a scarred face... a tattoo of a black feather on his wrist. He showed me a video of my brother. They had him tied up in a basement. He said if I didn't drop the vial into your first morning cup, they would send me his fingers first."

Alessandro turned slightly to Marco, who stood like a statue by the heavy iron door.

"The black feather," Alessandro murmured. "The Varga syndicate."

Marco nodded grimly. "The Hungarian faction. They’ve been trying to squeeze into our shipping ports in Palermo for months. But they wouldn't have the reach to get a maid inside this estate on their own. They had help."

"An inside hand," Alessandro completed the thought.

The snake doesn't enter the house unless someone opens the door.

Alessandro walked closer to Clara. He leaned down, his face stopping inches from hers. The sheer aura of his presence made the girl shiver violently.

"You brought poison into my home," Alessandro whispered. "You risked the lives of everyone under this roof. Under normal circumstances, your brother would be the last thing you ever worried about."

Clara whimpered, closing her eyes.

"But," Alessandro continued, his voice hardening, "you are alive because a three-year-old girl has a nose keener than my security team. Marco will find your brother. Not for you, but because the Vargas have overstepped. And once we have him..."

He paused, letting the silence stretch until it became unbearable.

"...you will tell the Vargas that the job is done. You will tell them I am dead."
