Chapter 14 - Samuel's Heart

There are moments when every family story becomes simple.

Not easy.

Simple.

Money did not matter.

The trust did not matter.

Frank did not matter.

Travis did not matter.

Only Samuel.

His heart defect had worsened faster than expected.

The cardiologist explained the surgery.

Risks.

Benefits.

Possibilities.

Kayla listened until one word stopped her.

“Mortality.”

She looked at the surgeon.

“You mean he could die?”

“We believe surgery gives him the best chance.”

Wade sat beside her.

Kayla looked at the consent form.

“I can't sign this.”

“You have to,” Wade said gently.

“What if I choose wrong?”

“There isn't a choice without risk.”

“What would you do?”

Wade looked through the glass.

Samuel seemed impossibly small.

“I'd be terrified.”

“That doesn't help.”

“I'd sign.”

“Why?”

“Because loving somebody sometimes means making the best decision you can without knowing how it ends.”

Kayla looked at him.

He was not only talking about Samuel.

She signed.

Before surgery, nurses allowed them several minutes together.

Kayla held Samuel first.

She whispered promises into his blanket.

Promises about parks.

Birthdays.

Pancakes.

School.

Christmas mornings.

Ordinary things.

The kind of things people only understand are miracles when they might lose them.

Then Wade held him.

“Hey, little bear.”

Samuel's eyes remained closed.

“I need you to do something.”

Wade's voice cracked.

“I need you to fight harder than your grandpa did the first time he sat in one of these rooms.”

Kayla began crying.

Wade touched the old bracelet around his wrist.

Then he removed it.

For the first time in twenty-seven years.

He placed Elizabeth's bracelet beside Samuel's blanket.

“I've carried your aunt long enough.”

His hands shook.

“I think she can sit with you awhile.”

The surgical team arrived.

Samuel was taken away.

Kayla collapsed against Wade.

The surgery lasted four hours and thirty-seven minutes.

Wade walked.

Sat.

Walked again.

Kayla drank half a cup of coffee and forgot the rest.

I checked on them whenever I could.

At hour three, Travis arrived.

Wade stood immediately.

Kayla shook her head.

“No.”

Travis stopped.

“I heard about the surgery.”

“How?”

“My attorney.”

“Leave.”

“Kayla, please.”

She stared at him.

“You paid someone to steal his medical records.”

“I know.”

“You came here because of money.”

“Yes.”

“You abandoned me.”

Travis looked down.

“Yes.”

Then he surprised everyone.

“I withdrew the custody petition.”

Kayla said nothing.

“I signed an agreement giving you temporary sole custody while the court reviews everything.”

“Why?”

Travis looked through the doors toward surgery.

“Because I saw him yesterday.”

Kayla frowned.

“What?”

“Through the glass.”

His voice shook.

“He was so small.”

For the first time, Travis looked less like a villain and more like a weak man confronting the consequences of weakness.

“I kept thinking about thirty-eight million dollars.”

He laughed bitterly.

“And then I saw him and realized he doesn't know what money is.”

Kayla's expression remained guarded.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

Travis nodded.

“I just wanted you to know I won't fight you today.”

“Today?”

“I'm trying not to make promises I'm not sure I deserve to make.”

Wade studied him.

That answer, at least, was honest.

Travis left.

Thirty minutes later, the surgeon entered.

Kayla stood so fast her chair fell backward.

Dr. Alvarez removed his surgical cap.

“The repair went well.”

Kayla's knees buckled.

Wade caught her.

“He's not out of danger,” the surgeon continued. “The next twenty-four hours are critical.”

But Kayla was already crying against Wade.

“He made it.”

“For today,” Wade whispered.

“For today.”

That night, Wade returned Elizabeth's bracelet to his wrist.

Then stopped.

He looked at it.

And instead of putting it back on, he placed it inside his wallet.

Beside the DNA test.

Beside Sarah's letter.

The past was still his.

May you like

It simply no longer had to be worn like a sentence.

At sunrise, Samuel opened his eyes.
