Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE CLARA KEPT SECRET

The Wisconsin house was nothing like the Blackwood mansion.
No marble.
No chandeliers.
No armed men lining long hallways.
It had creaky wooden floors, faded blue shutters, and a kitchen barely large enough for three people.
Lily loved it immediately.
Victor did not know what to do with himself.
On the first morning, she found him staring at a coffee machine.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s broken.”
Lily pressed one button.
Coffee began dripping.
Victor stared at it.
Lily tried not to laugh.
“You run companies.”
“I employ people who understand hostile appliances.”
She laughed anyway.
Ethan sat in his high chair banging a spoon.
Victor looked at him.
“You’re both enjoying this.”
Ethan screamed happily.
For forty-eight hours, nothing happened.
Victor cooked badly.
Lily cooked better.
Ethan discovered snow through the glass patio door and became fascinated.
At night Victor checked every lock three times.
Lily noticed.
“You can’t stay awake forever.”
“I’m not tired.”
“You’ve yawned six times.”
“Security assessment.”
“That isn’t what a yawn is.”
Victor almost smiled.
She stood beside him.
“Marco has people outside.”
“I know.”
“Grant knows where we are.”
“Yes.”
“Then sleep.”
Victor looked toward Ethan’s room.
Lily softened.
“You won’t protect him better by collapsing.”
Victor finally nodded.
But at three in the morning, Lily woke to a sound.
A floorboard.
She sat up.
Listened.
Another sound.
Downstairs.
Lily reached for her phone.
No signal.
Her blood turned cold.
She crossed into Ethan’s room.
Victor was already there.
He held one finger to his lips.
Then whispered, “Bathroom. Lock the door.”
Lily took Ethan.
“What about you?”
“Go.”
She obeyed.
Victor moved downstairs.
A shadow crossed the living room.
Victor stopped.
“Show yourself.”
A man stepped forward.
Old.
Tall despite age.
Silver hair.
No weapon visible.
Victor stared.
The man’s face resembled the photograph.
Gabriel Thorne.
His biological father.
“You’re difficult to visit,” Gabriel said.
Victor’s expression went cold.
“You bypassed my security.”
“I trained half the men who trained Marco.”
“That isn’t comforting.”
“It wasn’t meant to be.”
Victor did not invite him farther.
“Why are you here?”
“To keep you alive.”
“I’m doing fine.”
Gabriel glanced around.
“You’re hiding in a cottage while three organizations search Chicago for your location.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“What organizations?”
“Men who worked for Richard.”
“Richard is dead.”
“Loyalty outlives employers.”
Victor almost laughed.
“I’ve recently learned otherwise.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Fair.”
Lily appeared at the top of the stairs holding Ethan.
Victor looked up sharply.
“I told you to lock the door.”
“I did.”
“Then?”
“I unlocked it.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You must be Lily.”
“Who are you?”
“Gabriel Thorne.”
She descended one step.
Victor moved between them.
Gabriel noticed.
“So the rumors are true.”
Victor’s eyes hardened.
“What rumors?”
“That Victor Blackwood finally found someone he protects before himself.”
Lily looked uncomfortable.
Victor ignored it.
“Why target her?”
Gabriel’s expression became serious.
“Because she broke Serena’s plan.”
“Serena is finished.”
“Serena was a symptom.”
“Of what?”
“Richard built a system where information mattered more than loyalty.”
Gabriel looked at Lily.
“Your nanny found information.”
“The recordings.”
“Yes.”
“And now?”
“People believe she may have found more.”
Lily frowned.
“More what?”
“Clara’s copies.”
Victor stared.
“Police have Clara’s evidence.”
“Not all of it.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Clara contacted me before she died.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“You said she contacted Damian.”
“She contacted both of us.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You weren’t ready to hear it.”
Victor stepped forward.
“Stop deciding what I’m ready to hear.”
Gabriel accepted the anger.
“Clara told me she had discovered an account Richard kept hidden for decades.”
Victor frowned.
“Richard died eight years ago.”
“The account didn’t.”
“What account?”
“A reserve fund.”
Nathan later joined them by secure video.
Gabriel explained.
Richard Blackwood had hidden hundreds of millions over decades through legitimate holding companies mixed with criminal proceeds.
After his death, control passed not to Victor but to a secret council of old associates.
Adrian had discovered the fund.
Serena wanted access.
Clara discovered their search.
“That’s what this was about,” Victor said.
Gabriel nodded.
“Partly.”
“And Lily?”
“Clara encoded the final access records somewhere.”
“Where?”
Gabriel looked at Lily.
“Apparently in something connected to Ethan.”
Lily’s face changed.
“The music box.”
“No. Police searched it.”
Victor thought.
“Clara’s books?”
“No.”
Ethan babbled from Lily’s arms.
Then Lily froze.
“What?”
She looked at the baby’s stuffed bear.
A faded brown bear Ethan carried everywhere.
Victor frowned.
“What about it?”
“Clara bought this.”
“Yes.”
“It has a zipper.”
Victor stared.
Lily turned the bear over.
Hidden beneath the fur was a tiny zipper she had never noticed.
She opened it.
Stuffing.
Then something hard.
Victor carefully pulled out a plastic capsule.
Inside was a USB drive.
Gabriel exhaled.
“Clara.”
Victor stared.
His dead wife had hidden the final evidence inside their son’s favorite toy.
Nathan accessed the drive offline.
Files filled the screen.
Accounts.
Names.
Payments.
Judges.
Contractors.
Politicians.
Executives.
Old Blackwood associates.
Evidence stretching back twenty-five years.
Victor’s face hardened.
“This could destroy half my father’s network.”
Gabriel corrected him.
“It could destroy all of it.”
Nathan looked at Victor.
“What do you want to do?”
Old Victor might have hidden it.
Used it.
Controlled people with it.
The information was power.
Enormous power.
Victor looked at Ethan.
Then Lily.
“Give it to Grant.”
Gabriel studied him.
“You’re surrendering leverage.”
“Yes.”
“Your father would call that weakness.”
Victor looked directly at him.
“Richard wasn’t my father.”
Gabriel’s face changed.
Victor continued.
“And if power requires keeping my son surrounded by secrets, I don’t want it.”
Lily smiled faintly.
Nathan nodded.
“I’ll arrange the transfer.”
Gabriel watched Victor for a long moment.
Then said, “Elena would have been proud.”
Victor’s eyes darkened.
“You don’t get to speak for her.”
Gabriel lowered his head.
“You’re right.”
Before sunrise, federal and state investigators received Clara’s files.
Warrants followed.
Arrests began.
Old Blackwood companies were searched.
Former associates panicked.
Some fled.
Others cooperated.
The network Richard had built began collapsing.
And then, just when Victor believed the threat might finally end, Marco received an emergency call.
The security team outside the Wisconsin house had found one of their men unconscious.
Someone had breached the perimeter.
Victor turned toward Lily.
“Get Ethan.”
Too late.
The kitchen window shattered.
A masked man reached through.
Unlocked it.
Victor moved.
Gabriel moved faster.
The old man slammed the intruder against the wall.
Marco’s second guard entered and restrained him.
Police arrived minutes later.
The masked attacker carried no gun.
Only a photograph.
Victor removed the mask.
He recognized him.
Thomas Reed.
The Blackwood cook.
The employee who had supposedly testified against Serena.
Lily stared.
“Thomas?”
Thomas began laughing.
“You gave them the files.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“How do you know?”
Thomas smiled.
“The crown always knows.”
Grant arrived forty minutes later.
Under questioning, Thomas admitted he had served the old Blackwood council for years.
His testimony against Serena had not been loyalty to Ethan.
It had been an attempt to eliminate Serena after she became reckless.
Lily felt sick.
Even one of the people she thought had supported her had been playing another game.
Victor looked at her.
“This is why the house changes completely.”
She nodded.
No more inherited loyalties.
No more people hired because someone’s father once served someone else’s father.
No more secrets disguised as tradition.
That morning, Victor stood on the porch while snow fell.
Gabriel joined him.
“You dismantled Richard’s legacy in one night.”
Victor looked toward the window.
Inside, Lily was feeding Ethan breakfast.
“My legacy is in there.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You really are Elena’s son.”
May you like
Victor looked at him.
For the first time, he did not tell him to stop.
