Chapter 7 - SOFIA’S BOX

Lorenzo disappeared into the back room for exactly seven minutes.

When he returned, he carried a small wooden box.

It was dark walnut, polished smooth by age, with a brass clasp shaped like a rose. The sight of it changed the air. Even Dante straightened.

“What is that?” I asked.

“My wife’s emergency file,” Lorenzo said.

Bellamy looked up. “I thought she destroyed it.”

“She told everyone she destroyed it.”

A ghost of a smile touched Lorenzo’s mouth, then vanished. “Sofia did not destroy useful things.”

He set the box on the table.

For the first time all night, his hands hesitated.

Dante’s voice softened. “Boss.”

Lorenzo opened the clasp.

Inside were envelopes, photographs, a flash drive, two passports, and a sealed letter with Lorenzo written across the front in elegant handwriting.

He stared at that letter too long.

Then he pushed it aside.

Not because it did not matter.

Because it mattered too much.

Dante removed the flash drive and inserted it into a secure laptop. Folders appeared on the screen.

Bellini Trust.

Marco.

Medical.

If I Die.

My skin prickled.

Lorenzo clicked the Marco folder.

Files opened.

Photos of Marco with Cecelia. Bank transfers. Emails routed through shell companies. A schedule of nursery staff changes dated before Leo was born. Notes about trust amendments, family voting rights, and “maternal incapacity clauses.”

Bellamy leaned closer. “She knew.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

But his face looked like a man being stabbed by the dead.

One video file sat at the bottom.

Dante clicked it.

Sofia appeared on screen.

She was beautiful in a way photographs had not captured. Dark hair loose around her shoulders. No makeup. Pregnant. Tired. Afraid but trying not to be.

“If you’re watching this,” she said, “then I was right not to trust my own blood.”

Lorenzo gripped the edge of the table.

Sofia continued. “Lorenzo, I know you think enemies come from outside. Men with guns. Men with grudges. Men who want your territory. But the person I fear most eats at your table.”

She looked down, touching her stomach.

“Marco has been asking questions about the Bellini inheritance. Not directly. Never directly. But enough. Cecelia Hart was recommended by him. Uncle Sal approved the estate nurse rotation without asking me. My medication went missing twice. And yesterday, I caught Marco in the nursery before the nursery was finished.”

Bellamy whispered, “Dear God.”

Sofia’s voice broke slightly. “If anything happens to me, protect our son from everyone. Even family. Especially family.”

The video ended.

No one moved.

Rain battered the safe house walls somewhere above us.

Lorenzo closed the laptop slowly.

“I did not protect her,” he said.

Dante’s jaw clenched. “You didn’t know.”

“She told me. Not enough for me to understand, maybe. But enough. I thought pregnancy made her afraid. I thought grief from her mother’s death made her imagine things. I told her Marco was harmless.”

His voice turned flat.

“I put Cecelia in my son’s nursery.”

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I hated him in that moment.

Not because he had meant harm.

Because I knew what it felt like not to be believed until the damage was permanent.

“My ex used to say I was dramatic,” I said quietly. “Every time I told someone he scared me, they asked what I had done to upset him.”

Lorenzo looked at me.

I held his gaze.

“Sofia knew. You didn’t listen. That doesn’t mean you killed her. But it means you owe her more than revenge.”

Something moved across his face.

Pain.

Then respect.

Dante cleared his throat. “There’s enough here to challenge Marco, but not enough to stop the council if he controls Tyler and Cecelia.”

Bellamy finished labeling a test strip from the vial. His face tightened as the color changed.

“What is it?” Lorenzo asked.

“A sedative compound. Not standard for infants. Dangerous in repeated low doses.” He looked sick. “This would suppress appetite and weaken respiration.”

I sat down before my legs gave way.

“Can you prove it?”

“Preliminarily. I can document it, but we still need chain of custody.”

Dante said, “We also need Cecelia.”

“Where is she?” I asked.

He checked his phone. “Marco has her.”

“Of course he does.”

Lorenzo opened another folder.

Inside were security maps of the Rossi estate.

“Cecelia will not be at the council,” he said. “Too risky. Marco will keep her somewhere controlled.”

Dante leaned over the map. “East wing? Wine cellar?”

“No.” Lorenzo tapped one room. “Sofia’s old studio.”

I frowned. “Why there?”

“Because Marco is cruel.”

Dante looked grim.

I remembered the east wing. A locked sunroom with covered windows where no one cleaned unless ordered. Sofia had painted there before Leo was born. Once, passing by, I had seen canvases turned to the wall and dried flowers in a vase.

Lorenzo looked at Dante. “Can you get her out?”

“Maybe.”

“No maybe.”

Dante gave him a hard look. “I can get her out if Marco doesn’t expect us to try before sunrise.”

“He won’t,” I said.

Both men looked at me.

“Marco thinks you’ll either storm the council or hide the baby. He thinks I’ll be scared because of Tyler. He thinks Bellamy will stay with Leo. He thinks Dante will guard you.” I looked at the map. “He doesn’t think the maid will walk back into the mansion.”

Lorenzo’s eyes darkened. “No.”

“You asked what I wanted. I want proof.”

“You are not going back there.”

“I know the service halls. I know which floors creak. I know where staff smoke. I know which doors don’t latch. Your men know guns. I know invisibility.”

Dante studied me. “She’s right.”

Lorenzo turned on him. “Don’t.”

“She is,” Dante said. “Marco’s men will look for us. Not her.”

“I almost got her killed once tonight.”

“And if Marco wins, she dies anyway.”

The words were brutal.

True.

Lorenzo looked at me.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because Marco used my daughter.”

My voice shook, but it did not break.

“He can threaten me. He can lie about me. He can use Tyler. But he does not get to touch Lily’s name and walk away clean.”

Lorenzo nodded slowly.

Not agreement.

Recognition.

“Then we do it my way,” he said. “No heroics. No wandering. Dante goes with you.”

“No,” I said. “Dante looks like Dante. Everyone sees him.”

Dante’s mouth twitched again.

“She’s learning.”

Lorenzo hated every second of this.

But Leo stirred on the exam table, alive because I had disobeyed rules.

Finally Lorenzo pulled a small black device from a drawer and placed it in my palm.

“Press once, Dante hears you. Press twice, I come for you. Press three times—”

“What?”

His eyes held mine.

“Press three times only if you have already accepted that someone is not leaving alive.”

I closed my fingers around it.

Then I looked at Sofia’s frozen face on the laptop screen.

May you like

“I’m coming back with Cecelia,” I said.

And for the first time since Lily died, I meant it when I said I was coming back.
