Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The next seven days were a masterclass in psychological warfare. Under Harrison’s strict guidance, Khloe played her role to perfection. She attended charity luncheons, smiled for the social media pages of Harrington Commercial Group, and listened to Richard drone on about his stressful meetings.
But behind the scenes, a silent, deadly net was drawing tight.
Every evening, after Richard fell asleep, Khloe would slip into the guest bathroom and send encrypted files to Harrison’s team. She documented the serial numbers of the art pieces in the house, photographed the logbooks of Richard’s private flights, and secured the security codes to his personal safe.
On the eighth day, Harrison called her.
"We have it all," Harrison said, his voice cutting through the telephone line like a scalpel. "Richard didn't just hide assets, Khloe. He committed bank fraud. He used forged signatures—your signature—to secure loans for his offshore shell companies. This is no longer a civil dispute. This is federal."
Khloe sat on the edge of her bed, her heart racing. "What do we do now?"
"Tomorrow morning, I am filing for emergency divorce proceedings, absolute custody of the child, and a complete freeze on all of Richard's personal and business accounts. The papers will be served to him at his office at exactly 10:00 AM. I want you to meet me at the Montgomery County Courthouse at noon. We are going to secure an immediate protective order."
"Will he be there?"
"He will have no choice," Harrison said coldly. "By noon, his credit cards will be declined, his corporate accounts will be locked, and his precious board of directors will be panic-calling him. He will run to the courthouse to try and fight the injunction. And I will be waiting."
The morning of the filing, the weather was bleak and overcast. Khloe dressed in a simple, elegant navy maternity dress. She didn't wear her wedding ring.
At 10:15 AM, her phone began to ring. It was Richard.
She didn't answer.
Ten minutes later, a barrage of text messages flooded her phone.
Richard: What the hell is this, Khloe?
Richard: Your brother has lost his mind. Pick up the phone right now!
Richard: You think you can ruin me? You’re nothing without my name!
Khloe deleted the messages without replying. She felt a strange, liberating sense of peace. For years, she had been afraid of his anger. Now, she realized his anger was nothing more than the thrashing of a drowning man.
When she arrived at the Montgomery County Courthouse, the grand stone building loomed over the plaza. She climbed the wide marble steps slowly, holding her heavy belly.
As she reached the top landing, she saw them.
Richard was there, his tie slightly askew, his face flushed with a mixture of panic and rage. But he wasn't alone. Standing right beside him, holding his arm with possessive arrogance, was Vanessa Kensington.
Vanessa looked exactly like she did in her photographs—tall, sharply dressed in a designer cream suit, her dark hair perfectly styled. But her eyes were malicious.
"Khloe," Richard spat, stepping forward. "You tell your psychotic brother to call off this injunction right now. Do you have any idea what he’s done? He’s frozen the payroll accounts for Harrington Commercial! He’s trying to destroy my company!"
"He isn't destroying it, Richard," Khloe said, her voice steady and quiet. "You did that when you stole from me. And from our daughter."
Vanessa stepped in front of Richard, her heels clicking sharply against the stone. She looked at Khloe’s round stomach with pure disgust.
"Don't play the victim, Khloe," Vanessa sneered, her voice dripping with venom. "We all know you only got pregnant to try and trap him. But it didn't work. Ricky doesn't love you. He hasn't loved you for years. The penthouse nursery is already decorated. My baby is going to have his name. You’re just the dead weight he’s throwing out."
Khloe felt a cold chill run down her spine, but she didn't step back. "This is a courthouse, Vanessa. I suggest you walk away."
"Or what?" Vanessa stepped closer, her face twisting into an ugly mask of privilege and malice. "You think your brother scares me? He’s just a lawyer. Richard is a Harrington. We own this city."
"Vanessa, stop," Richard warned, though his voice lacked any real conviction. He was too busy scanning the plaza, looking for Harrison.
"No, Richard! She needs to know her place!" Vanessa hissed. She lunged forward, her eyes wild with anger. "You stupid, pathetic—"

"Get away from me," Khloe said, raising her hand to shield her belly.
But Vanessa didn't stop. In a sudden, violent motion, she threw her hands forward, striking Khloe directly in the chest.
