CHAPTER 4: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SPOKE

CHAPTER 4: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SPOKE

Three weeks later, the mansion felt alive again.

Christmas decorations remained in place.

The fireplaces burned warmly.

Laughter echoed through the halls.

The girls slowly began to heal.

Then something happened that made Nathan cry for the first time in years.

They were decorating cookies in the kitchen.

Emma was laughing.

Lily was covered in frosting.

Sophie was singing softly.

And Grace...

Grace was speaking.

For months she had barely said a word.

Now she looked up at her father.

"Daddy?"

Nathan froze.

The room became silent.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

Grace climbed onto his lap.

She touched his face carefully.

As if making sure he was real.

Then she whispered:

"Are you staying this time?"

The question shattered him.

Tears filled his eyes.

Because she wasn't asking about tonight.

Or tomorrow.

She was asking about the six months he had missed.

The birthdays.

The tears.

The lonely dinners.

Nathan wrapped all four girls in his arms.

"I'm staying," he promised.

"No more meetings."

"No more excuses."

"No more missing Christmas."

Outside, snow drifted softly across the Aspen mountains.

Inside, four little girls finally felt safe.
