Chapter 10 - The Truth About the Fire

Nobody moved.

Silas Ashford's image remained frozen on every screen.

Adrian Bennett has become a liability.

Barrett, handle it.

Willa could hear her heartbeat.

Kendrick stood beside her like stone.

Barrett smiled.

"You wanted the truth."

He spread his arms.

"There it is."

Willa looked at Kendrick.

He seemed unable to look at her.

For the first time, she understood why.

He had spent days discovering that he hadn't ordered her family's death.

Now he was learning his father might have.

The distinction mattered.

And yet it didn't.

An Ashford still had.

Barrett walked deeper into the ballroom.

"No one needs to shoot anyone."

Several weapons remained pointed at him.

"Not yet, anyway."

Kendrick finally spoke.

"What did my father mean by handle it?"

Barrett laughed.

"You know exactly what he meant."

"No."

Kendrick's voice became harder.

"Play the rest."

Barrett's smile faltered.

"The rest?"

"If that's the truth, play the full recording."

Willa looked at the screen.

Something shifted inside her.

Barrett hesitated.

Only a second.

Enough.

Kendrick saw it.

"So there is more."

"It changes nothing."

"Play it."

Barrett raised the remote.

"No."

Kendrick smiled without warmth.

"Then I will."

One of his technicians had been quietly working from the control booth.

The screen flickered.

The video restarted.

Silas appeared.

"Adrian Bennett has become a liability."

Barrett's younger voice answered from off-camera.

"Then authorize removal."

Silas frowned.

"Removal from financial operations."

The ballroom went silent.

Silas continued.

"I want Bennett and his family extracted before whoever he's investigating realizes what he knows."

Willa's knees weakened.

Kendrick looked at Barrett.

The recording continued.

Barrett said, "You believe Adrian?"

"I believe he's frightened."

Silas leaned toward the camera.

"And Adrian Bennett does not frighten easily."

He paused.

"Get them somewhere safe. Kendrick can authorize the extraction."

The video ended.

Everything changed.

Willa stared at Barrett.

"You edited it."

Barrett's expression became empty.

"For six years."

Her voice trembled.

"You made me believe they wanted us dead."

"They eventually would have."

"My mother."

Willa stepped forward.

"You locked her inside."

Kendrick reached for her.

She moved beyond him.

"My father trusted you."

Barrett rolled his eyes.

"Your father was naïve."

"He found the theft."

"He found everything."

Barrett's calm cracked.

"Silas built an empire and then became sentimental in old age. Adrian found the accounts. He found the payments. He found judges, police chiefs, unions, construction contracts."

Barrett's eyes swept the room.

"He could have destroyed all of us."

"Then you murdered him."

"I protected what we built."

"No."

Willa's voice became steady.

"You protected yourself."

Barrett smiled.

"Same thing."

Several family leaders looked at one another.

The alliances Barrett hoped to destroy were turning against him instead.

Kendrick stepped beside Willa.

"You killed Celeste for the same reason."

"She couldn't leave buried things buried."

"And Caleb?"

Barrett's expression darkened.

"Your little brother was useful."

Willa's hands clenched.

"You tortured a seventeen-year-old."

"I educated him."

Kendrick moved before anyone expected it.

One second Barrett was smiling.

The next Kendrick's fist sent him crashing across a table.

Glasses shattered.

Guards rushed forward.

Kendrick grabbed Barrett by the collar.

"You don't say his name like you own him."

Barrett laughed through blood.

"There he is."

Kendrick stopped.

"The Ashford underneath all that restraint."

Barrett lowered his voice.

"You think Willow will love you after this?"

Willa froze.

Kendrick's grip tightened.

Barrett smiled toward her.

"You think standing beside him changes what his family is?"

"No," Willa said.

Both men looked at her.

She walked closer.

"It doesn't."

Kendrick's eyes changed.

Willa continued.

"His family did terrible things."

Barrett grinned.

"Exactly."

"So did mine."

His smile faded.

"My father moved criminal money."

Willa's voice remained clear.

"He told himself he was keeping worse men from controlling it. Maybe that was true. Maybe it wasn't."

She looked around the ballroom.

"Every person here has spent years calling survival morality."

Nobody interrupted.

"But there is one difference between Kendrick and you."

Barrett's face hardened.

"Kendrick is willing to know what he inherited."

She looked at him.

"You only want to keep owning it."

Barrett suddenly pulled a hidden pistol from his ankle.

Chaos exploded.

He grabbed Willa.

Cold metal pressed against her throat.

Kendrick froze.

"Drop every weapon!"

Barrett dragged her backward.

"Now!"

Guns lowered.

Penny screamed.

"Willa!"

Titan rose with a thunderous growl.

Barrett tightened his arm around Willa.

"Control your dog."

Willa looked at Titan.

The mastiff trembled with fury.

"Stay."

Titan obeyed.

Barely.

Barrett backed toward a service exit.

"Kendrick, you really should have chosen one of those pretty heiresses."

Kendrick's eyes never left Willa.

"Let her go."

"And surrender my only advantage?"

"You don't leave this building."

Barrett laughed.

"I built half the exits."

He dragged Willa through the service door.

A black car waited in the garage.

Within seconds, Manhattan disappeared behind tinted windows.

Willa did not fight.

Not yet.

Barrett watched her.

"You're calmer than your mother."

Willa's blood froze.

"Don't talk about her."

"Marianne fought until the smoke took her."

Willa looked at him.

"You're trying to make me angry."

"I'm remembering."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You're trying to make yourself feel powerful."

His jaw tightened.

Good.

She had found the nerve.

They drove toward Brooklyn.

Willa recognized the neighborhood.

Then the street.

"No."

Barrett smiled.

"Homecoming."

The car stopped.

The Bennett property had been abandoned for six years.

Only part of the original house remained.

Blackened brick.

Collapsed walls.

Weeds.

Willa stared at the place where her life ended.

Barrett marched her inside.

"What do you want?"

"The original ledger."

"I don't have it."

"Your father did."

"It burned."

"No."

Barrett shoved her toward the old kitchen.

"Adrian told Caleb where he hid it."

Willa's heart raced.

"And Caleb told me he told you."

"He lied."

"Probably."

Barrett smiled.

"He learned that from me."

They reached the remains of the basement.

Barrett pointed toward a section of wall.

"Open it."

Willa stared.

Then remembered.

Her father measuring the basement when she was a child.

Caleb joking that the wall was thicker than it needed to be.

She approached.

A loose brick.

Behind it, a steel dial.

Her father's birthday.

Nothing.

Her mother's birthday.

Nothing.

Then she understood.

Her own.

Click.

A compartment opened.

Inside sat a waterproof case.

Barrett's eyes lit up.

Willa removed it.

"Give it to me."

She held it tighter.

"You killed everyone for this?"

"For what it represents."

"What?"

"Ownership."

Barrett smiled.

"Every hidden account. Every politician. Every officer. Every compromised judge."

He extended his hand.

"With that ledger, I don't need the Ashford Syndicate."

Willa looked behind him.

A shadow moved.

Kendrick.

He had found her.

But Barrett didn't know.

Willa smiled.

"What?"

Barrett asked.

"My father was smarter than you."

His expression changed.

"Give me the case."

"No."

The gun rose.

Then Titan roared.

The mastiff struck Barrett from the side.

The gun fired.

Willa fell.

Kendrick rushed forward.

Barrett tried to run.

Kendrick tackled him against the wall.

Willa crawled toward the case.

Barrett screamed:

"You think this ends with me?"

Kendrick pinned him.

"It ends enough."

Police sirens approached.

Willa stared.

"You called police?"

Kendrick looked at her.

"Celeste deserved something better than an internal execution."

Barrett laughed.

"You'll expose yourself."

"Yes."

The answer silenced everyone.

Kendrick stood.

"I told Willa the truth could include me."

Federal agents entered minutes later.

Barrett Cole was placed in handcuffs.

For the first time in six years, Willa watched the man from the fire become powerless.

As officers led him away, Barrett turned.

"Willow."

She looked at him.

He smiled.

"Ask your brother what happened the night Celeste died."

Willa froze.

Kendrick did too.

Barrett disappeared into the waiting vehicle.

Neither spoke.

Because suddenly the victory felt unfinished.

And miles away, inside Kendrick's private hospital, Caleb Bennett opened his eyes.

The first thing he said was not his sister's name.

May you like

It was:

"Celeste was still alive when I found her."
