Chapter 7 - The Exchange

The location Sebastian sent was an abandoned racetrack two counties away.

Roman recognized it immediately.

Blackthorne Downs.

His father had owned it through a shell company thirty years earlier.

The track had closed after a fire.

Of course it had.

Everything in this story seemed to begin or end in flames.

Roman prepared forty men.

Clara watched.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“No what?”

“He expects an army.”

“Good.”

“He’ll kill Eliza before they reach the gate.”

Roman slammed a magazine into his pistol.

“I am not walking into that place alone.”

“You aren’t.”

Clara held up the ledger.

“I’m going first.”

“No.”

“We’re back to that?”

“This time I mean it.”

“So do I.”

Elias watched from a hospital video feed.

“Clara.”

She looked at the screen.

“I lost fifteen years because everyone decided what I should know and where I should go.”

“Sweetheart—”

“No.”

She looked at Roman.

“Sebastian wants me because he thinks I can unlock the ledger.”

“He wants the ledger.”

“He already has copies of financial records. There’s something else.”

Roman thought about Elias’s old words.

The proof lives with the horses.

Clara continued.

“He wants Onyx too.”

Roman frowned.

“He didn't mention him.”

“He didn't need to.”

“What do you mean?”

“The ledger has registration codes.”

She showed him a page.

“Every account is connected to a horse.”

“So?”

“So one horse appears twenty-seven times.”

Roman read the name.

SERAPH.

Clara’s childhood mare.

“She survived the fire,” Clara whispered. “My father hid information through her bloodline.”

“How?”

“I think the final key is biological.”

Elias heard them through the video.

His face changed.

“Clara.”

She turned.

“What?”

“Your mother designed it.”

“Designed what?”

“The account cipher.”

Elias closed his eyes.

“She used genetic lineage numbers from veterinary records.”

Clara stared.

“Seraph’s descendants.”

“Yes.”

Roman understood.

“And Onyx is one.”

“The last confirmed direct descendant.”

Clara whispered:

“That’s why Sebastian needed him here.”

Nathan had arranged the purchase.

Sebastian’s network had been steering pieces onto the board for months.

But they had made one mistake.

They had not expected Clara to be the nanny inside Roman Bellamy’s home.

Or perhaps someone had.

Roman looked at Nathan, who remained guarded.

“Did you know Clara would work for me?”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

“Who recommended the nanny agency?”

Roman suddenly remembered.

Gabriel.

Clara stared.

“He put me in your house.”

Roman called Gabriel’s private number.

No answer.

Then a text arrived.

YES.

Roman stared.

Another appeared.

I FOUND CLARA BEFORE SEBASTIAN DID. I THOUGHT YOUR ESTATE WAS THE ONLY PLACE I COULD PROTECT HER.

Clara looked stunned.

Gabriel had not accidentally brought her into danger.

He had brought her into Roman’s fortress because he knew Sebastian was searching.

A final text arrived.

I’M SORRY I LIED.

Roman whispered:

“You better live long enough for me to punch you.”

They went to Blackthorne Downs before dawn.

Roman allowed only six men close to the property.

Everyone else waited beyond sight.

Clara rode Onyx.

Roman had objected.

Then Onyx refused to enter the trailer without her.

The argument ended.

Fog covered the abandoned racetrack.

Broken grandstands leaned against the dark sky.

Clara felt Onyx’s muscles tense beneath her.

“Easy.”

Roman rode beside her on another horse.

“You sure you can do this?”

“No.”

“That’s comforting.”

Clara looked at him.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

“Good.”

They reached the center of the track.

Floodlights suddenly exploded to life.

Clara shielded her eyes.

Sebastian’s voice came through loudspeakers.

“Welcome home.”

Roman looked around.

“Show me my daughter.”

Eliza appeared on the giant cracked scoreboard.

She sat beside Gabriel.

Both alive.

Sebastian walked behind them.

“Clara Hayes.”

Clara looked toward the camera.

“You ruined my family.”

Sebastian smiled.

“Your family ruined itself.”

“You burned our stable.”

“Daniel did.”

“You paid him.”

“Yes.”

The casual confession turned Clara’s stomach.

“You destroyed my mother’s life.”

“Your mother was far more dangerous than you understand.”

“Because she could count?”

Sebastian laughed.

“Because she couldn't be bought.”

Clara felt unexpected pride.

Sebastian continued.

“Bring Onyx to the winner’s circle.”

Roman whispered:

“Trap.”

“I know.”

They moved anyway.

At the winner’s circle, three armed men waited.

One carried a scanner.

He approached Onyx.

Clara stopped him.

“Touch him and he’ll break your ribs.”

The man hesitated.

Sebastian emerged from the tunnel.

For the first time, Roman saw the man responsible for decades of pain.

He looked ordinary.

That somehow made him worse.

“Roman Bellamy.”

“Sebastian Rourke.”

“You look like Angelo.”

“You look like a corpse that forgot to lie down.”

Clara almost laughed.

Sebastian did not.

“Ledger.”

Clara held it.

“Eliza first.”

“No.”

“Then you get nothing.”

Sebastian stared.

“She has Helen’s spine.”

Roman said:

“And my patience is gone.”

Sebastian nodded toward one guard.

Eliza was brought out.

Gabriel remained behind.

“Daddy!”

Roman’s control nearly shattered.

“Baby, look at me.”

Eliza did.

“You’re going home.”

Sebastian smiled.

“Eventually.”

Clara held up the ledger.

“You need the horse and the book.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You know.”

“I want to hear you say it.”

Sebastian stepped closer.

“Helen built a security key based on genetic sequences attached to Seraph’s breeding records. The master account cannot be opened without comparing the ledger codes to a direct descendant.”

Roman frowned.

“What master account?”

Sebastian smiled.

“Angelo Bellamy stole nearly four hundred million dollars from Vittorio Vescari.”

Roman stared.

“My father stole it?”

“He redirected it.”

Elias’s voice suddenly came through Roman’s hidden earpiece.

“No.”

Sebastian couldn't hear.

Elias continued from their remote command post.

“Angelo didn't steal it. Helen did.”

Clara’s breath caught.

Her father explained.

“She moved the money into trust accounts for families destroyed by Vescari operations.”

Clara stared at Sebastian.

Four hundred million dollars.

Her mother had spent her final years living in a modest apartment while millions sat hidden beyond anyone’s reach.

Not because she couldn't access it.

Because it was never hers.

Sebastian held out his hand.

“Ledger.”

Clara dismounted.

She walked toward him.

Roman whispered:

“Clara.”

She ignored him.

Closer.

Closer.

Then she handed Sebastian the book.

He smiled.

“Smart girl.”

Clara smiled back.

“You forgot something.”

“What?”

“Onyx doesn't like you.”

Sebastian frowned.

Clara whistled.

Onyx charged.

Chaos erupted.

Roman grabbed Eliza.

Gunfire exploded.

Clara dropped behind the winner’s circle wall.

Gabriel attacked his guard.

Roman’s men stormed the tunnels.

Sebastian ran.

Clara saw him disappear toward the old stable complex carrying the ledger.

She jumped onto Onyx.

“Clara!” Roman shouted.

May you like

But she was already chasing the man who had destroyed her childhood.

And Sebastian was riding straight toward the same abandoned barns where another fire had been prepared.
