Chapter 11 - THE SISTER NOBODY MENTIONED

Her name was Claire Bennett.
Born seven minutes after Catherine.
Adopted separately.
Richard had never heard of her.
Not once.
Catherine’s parents had died before Richard met her, so there was nobody to ask.
The sealed adoption documents showed both girls had been placed with different families after their biological mother died.
Catherine had discovered Claire at age twenty-nine.
Two years before she married Richard.
They corresponded secretly.
Why secretly?
Nobody knew.
Then the messages stopped.
Richard felt betrayed.
Immediately, he hated himself for it.
Catherine had been murdered.
She had been navigating threats he never understood.
She had likely hidden Claire for protection.
Still, the discovery hurt.
Emily sat beside him.
“You’re allowed to be upset.”
“I’m angry at a dead woman.”
“You can love someone and still be angry.”
He looked at her.
“You always know what to say?”
“No. Sometimes I say terrible things and pretend they were intentional.”
He almost smiled.
Investigators located Claire.
Alive.
Forty-two.
Living under another name in Mexico City.
The woman photographed beside Michael Vale was real.
And she contacted authorities voluntarily after news broke.
Her first message was simple.
I WILL SPEAK TO RICHARD IF EMILY IS PRESENT.
Richard stared.
“Why Emily?”
Nobody knew.
Video conference.
Claire appeared.
Richard felt like someone had reached into his past.
Same eyes as Catherine.
Same small crease between her eyebrows.
But harder.
Older.
“You look like her,” Richard whispered.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“So do the boys.”
Richard swallowed.
“You’ve seen them?”
“Photographs.”
“How long have you known about them?”
“Since before they were born.”
“Why didn’t Catherine tell me about you?”
Claire looked down.
“Because I asked her not to.”
“Why?”
“I worked for Asterion.”
Richard stiffened.
Claire had been a biomedical software engineer.
She joined Asterion around the same time Emily’s mother discovered Project Oracle.
“She knew your mother,” Claire told Emily.
Emily stared.
“What?”
“They worked together.”
Everything connected again.
“My mother never mentioned Catherine.”
“She didn’t know Catherine then.”
Claire explained.
Emily’s mother had collected technical evidence.
Claire helped interpret it.
Thomas Bennett stored backups.
Years later, Catherine found Claire through adoption records.
By coincidence—or fate—Catherine married a man whose company became strategically important to the same conspiracy.
Claire warned her.
Richard’s throat tightened.
“You knew Daniel was involved?”
“Not initially.”
“When did you know?”
“About six months before Catherine died.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I begged her to tell you.”
Richard stopped.
“What?”
“She wouldn’t.”
His anger collapsed.
“Why?”
Claire looked directly at him.
“Because she said you trusted Daniel more than anyone.”
Richard went silent.
“She was afraid you would confront him before she had proof.”
That sounded exactly like him.
Act first.
Control immediately.
“She thought you would make things worse.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Again.
His need to control had isolated the people trying to protect him.
Claire continued.
“Catherine wanted evidence strong enough that Daniel couldn’t bury it.”
“And she died first.”
“Yes.”
“Did Michael kill her?”
Claire’s face changed.
“I don’t know who administered the medication.”
“But?”
“I know who ordered it.”
Richard stared.
“Who?”
Claire answered:
“Charles Voss.”
Nobody moved.
“How do you know?”
“I heard him.”
“Where?”
“Asterion executive retreat.”
“You were there?”
“I was secretly recording meetings by then.”
She had evidence.
An audio file.
Voss speaking with Daniel.
Catherine cannot reach Richard before delivery.
Daniel:
I’m handling it.
Voss:
Handling it means preventing disclosure.
Daniel:
She’s pregnant.
Voss:
Then tragedy will be believable.
Richard’s hands shook.
Claire closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“Why didn’t you release this years ago?”
“I tried.”
“What happened?”
“Michael found me.”
She rolled up her sleeve.
A long scar crossed her forearm.
“He nearly killed me.”
Claire fled.
Changed names.
Moved countries.
Her husband left because he could not live under constant threat.
She had been hiding ever since.
Emily whispered,
“Then why were you with Michael six months ago?”
Claire’s expression changed.
“Because he found me again.”
Richard tensed.
“He threatened you?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“He wanted out.”
Silence.
“Michael said Voss had ordered him to eliminate Samantha after the wedding.”
Emily frowned.
“His own sister?”
“Voss eliminates liabilities.”
Michael knew Samantha—Victoria—was becoming reckless.
She wanted Richard’s wealth personally.
Daniel wanted money.
Voss wanted Hawthorne Dynamics.
The alliance was fracturing.
“So Michael approached you,” Richard said.
Claire nodded.
“He wanted immunity.”
“Did you believe him?”
“No.”
“Why meet?”
“To record him.”
“Do you have it?”
“Yes.”
Claire played the recording.
Michael’s voice.
Voss never intended Victoria to survive.
Daniel either.
After the acquisition, everyone connected to the old operation disappears.
Richard felt cold.
Victoria did not know she had been marked for death.
Neither did Daniel.
They had destroyed Catherine for a man who planned to destroy them too.
Claire continued.
“Michael has a ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“Every Oracle operation.”
Names.
Payments.
Deaths.
Targets.
Bribes.
Hospital contacts.
Everything.
“Where is it?”
“He wouldn’t tell me.”
“But Voss is looking for him.”
“Yes.”
“Then Michael is running.”
“Yes.”
Richard leaned toward the screen.
“And he’s the one messaging me.”
Claire paused.
“I think so.”
The anonymous messages.
You arrested the wrong people.
Catherine knew there were three of us.
Maybe Michael was not threatening Richard.
Maybe he was guiding him.
Badly.
Dangerously.
But guiding him.
“Why photograph my sons?”
Claire’s face hardened.
“To prove your security was still compromised.”
Emily shook her head.
“That terrified us.”
“Michael doesn’t think like normal people.”
“He helped murder people.”
“Yes.”
Claire did not defend him.
“He wants survival.”
Richard looked at Ortiz.
“If he wants immunity, let him surrender.”
Claire shook her head.
“He won’t until he knows Voss can’t reach him.”
“Then tell him we can protect him.”
“He doesn’t trust governments.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Convenient.”
Claire leaned forward.
“But he trusts Emily.”
Everyone looked at her.
Emily stared.
“Why?”
“Because your mother once saved his life.”
Silence.
“What?”
Claire explained.
Before Michael became fully involved in Oracle, he had tried to leave Asterion’s network.
Voss ordered him silenced.
Emily’s mother discovered the plan and warned him.
Michael escaped.
Then returned later after Samantha was threatened.
Emily felt sick.
“So he became part of it anyway.”
“Yes.”
“He helped kill my mother.”
Claire’s eyes softened.
“I don’t know whether he directly caused her death.”
“He worked the shift.”
“Yes.”
Emily stood.
“I don’t care why he trusts me.”
Richard watched her.
“He doesn’t get forgiveness because he has information.”
“No.”
Emily’s voice shook.
“He gets a courtroom.”
Richard nodded.
“Agreed.”
Claire looked relieved.
“I think he’ll contact you again.”
He did.
Twenty minutes later.
A voice call.
Unknown number.
Richard put it on speaker.
“Michael.”
Silence.
Then:
“You finally found Claire.”
His voice sounded ordinary.
That was somehow disturbing.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Surrender.”
Michael laughed.
“Voss owns people inside federal agencies.”
“Prove it.”
“The ledger does.”
“Then give us the ledger.”
“I will.”
Emily stepped closer.
“No.”
Michael went quiet.
“Emily.”
She stiffened.
“You don’t get to say my name like you know me.”
“I knew your mother.”
“You watched her die.”
Silence.
Michael’s voice changed.
“I tried to stop it.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then don’t tell me what you tried.”
Richard looked at her.
Powerful.
Controlled.
Furious.
Michael exhaled.
“You sound like her.”
“I don’t care.”
“I have proof she was murdered.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Where?”
“In the ledger.”
“Then give it to police.”
“I need a guarantee.”
“No.”
Michael paused.
“What?”
“You don’t get to bargain with my mother’s death.”
Richard felt something shift.
For years he had negotiated everything.
Emily refused to turn truth into currency.
Michael seemed genuinely surprised.
Then he said,
“Your mother knew Catherine would finish what she started.”
Emily stared.
“And Catherine knew you would.”
“What does that mean?”
“The women kept choosing successors.”
Emily’s face tightened.
“I’m not part of your conspiracy.”
“No.”
Michael’s voice softened.
“You’re the reason it’s ending.”
Then the line disconnected.
A location arrived.
Santa Cruz Mountains.
Coordinates.
Ortiz looked at Richard.
“Trap.”
“Probably.”
Another message.
COME ALONE, EMILY.
Richard immediately said,
“No.”
Emily turned toward him.
He caught himself.
“I mean—”
“No is correct.”
He blinked.
“You agree?”
“I’m not stupid.”
Marcus almost smiled.
Federal tactical teams prepared instead.
The location led to an abandoned observatory.
Inside, they found no Michael.
Only a metal safe.
Within it:
The ledger.
And one video file.
Michael appeared onscreen.
“If you’re watching this, Voss has probably found me.”
He looked exhausted.
“The ledger is real.”
A pause.
“But the person you need to fear most isn’t Charles Voss.”
Richard leaned forward.
Michael continued.
“Voss built Oracle.”
Another breath.
“Someone else took control of it three years ago.”
Richard’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Michael looked directly into the camera.
“Someone inside Hawthorne Dynamics.”
The video glitched.
Then the name appeared onscreen.
MARCUS COLE.
Emily turned slowly.
May you like
Everyone looked at Richard’s security chief.
Marcus’s face went white.
