CHAPTER 4 – THE WOMAN WHO DECLARED WAR ON A HOUSEKEEPER

CHAPTER 4 – THE WOMAN WHO DECLARED WAR ON A HOUSEKEEPER

The engagement party was canceled.

Officially, the reason was Grant's unexpected early return and "schedule adjustments."

Unofficially...

Nobody in the mansion could ignore what had happened.

By evening the story had spread through the staff like electricity.

Not exaggerated.

Not embellished.

Simply repeated.

"Lily asked her to dance."

"Grant gave the money to Maya."

"He defended them."

Every employee whispered the same final sentence.

"I've never seen him look at Ms. Prescott like that."

Grant spent most of the evening in his study.

He answered emails from Boston.

Reviewed contracts.

Tried to focus.

Failed.

Every few minutes he remembered one image.

A little girl standing barefoot on cold marble.

Holding out her hand.

"Come dance with me."

Children didn't fake kindness.

Adults often did.

Across the mansion...

Sloane was breaking crystal.

A champagne glass shattered against the wall of her private sitting room.

Vanessa flinched.

"This is ridiculous."

"He humiliated me."

Vanessa nodded quickly.

"In front of employees."

"In front of servants."

"They'll never respect me now."

"They already don't," Vanessa muttered.

"What?"

"Nothing."

Sloane paced furiously.

"This is Maya's fault."

Vanessa hesitated.

"Is it?"

"If she hadn't brought that child—"

"It wasn't the child's fault."

Sloane stopped walking.

Slowly...

She looked at Vanessa.

"What did you say?"

Vanessa realized too late she had spoken honestly.

"I just mean..."

"The little girl didn't do anything wrong."

Sloane's eyes narrowed.

"You're taking their side?"

"No."

"I'm saying Grant loves fairness."

"He chose a maid over me."

"No."

Vanessa sighed.

"He chose what looked right."

Those words landed like a slap.

The next morning...

Maya arrived twenty minutes early.

She hoped to avoid everyone.

Instead...

Jonah was waiting.

He handed her a small envelope.

"Mr. Whitaker asked me to give you this."

Inside was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

"Thank you for raising a daughter who reminds adults how to be human."

There was no signature.

There didn't need to be.

Maya read it twice.

Then folded it carefully into her wallet beside Lily's ultrasound picture.

She had no idea...

Someone was watching from the second-floor balcony.

Sloane.

And as she watched Maya smile for the first time in months...

Something dark settled behind her own eyes.

If Grant admired that housekeeper so much...

Then perhaps it was time to make sure Maya disappeared from the Whitaker estate forever.

What Sloane did not realize...

Was that several security cameras had recorded every second of yesterday's "dance challenge."

May you like

And before the week was over...

Those recordings would become the evidence that changed far more than an engagement.
