Chapter 6 - The Announcement

The engagement announcement was not a celebration.

It was an ambush dressed in champagne.

Rowan chose the largest dining room, the one with portraits of dead Fieros staring down from paneled walls. He invited family, senior executives, legal counsel, two board members, and enough staff to make gossip impossible to contain.

Dalia worked behind the service line with her hair pinned tight, her face pale, and the drive hidden beneath a bandage wrapped around her left wrist. It was Rowan’s idea. No one searched injuries. No one looked too closely at pain.

Isla stood beside Rowan in emerald silk. She looked radiant. She looked untouchable. She looked, Dalia thought, like a woman measuring the room for where the blood would fall.

Rowan lifted his glass.

“My family has waited for certainty,” he said. “Tonight I give them clarity.”

Isla smiled.

Salvatore leaned back in his chair.

Enzo watched Dalia.

Rowan continued, “There will be no engagement.”

The room went still.

Isla’s smile remained for one perfect second too long.

Then it broke.

“Rowan,” she said softly.

He did not look at her. “Miss Marsh and I have ended our understanding.”

Bianca’s wineglass stopped halfway to her mouth.

Salvatore’s face hardened.

A board member coughed.

Rowan turned to the room. “Tomorrow morning, I will ask the board to confirm a full internal audit of all emergency voting provisions, family council authorities, and private trust instruments.”

No one moved.

Then Salvatore laughed.

“You humiliate a woman in front of family and call it business?”

“No,” Rowan said. “I call it mercy. Business begins tomorrow.”

Isla’s eyes filled with tears so quickly Dalia almost admired her.

“You promised me privacy.”

“I promised you discretion if you gave me honesty. You gave me neither.”

Enzo pushed away from the wall. “This is unnecessary.”

Rowan looked at him.

“Sit down.”

The room seemed to hold its breath.

Enzo did not sit.

Bobby, lying beside the fireplace, lifted his head.

Enzo sat.

Dalia almost dropped the coffee pot.

For the first time, she saw what Rowan’s power truly was. It was not loud. It did not need to prove itself. It simply occupied the room until everyone else remembered they were borrowing space.

Isla turned to leave.

Rowan’s voice stopped her.

“One more thing.”

She froze.

“Your brother should stop looking for what Dalia Ashford took.”

Dalia felt every eye in the room swing toward her.

Isla turned slowly.

Now the tears were gone.

“Who?”

Rowan smiled faintly. “Exactly.”

Dalia understood then.

He had not exposed Isla.

He had forced her to react.

And she had.

Salvatore’s hand tightened around his glass. Bianca looked toward Enzo. Enzo looked toward Dalia with a hatred so naked it needed no translation.

That night, Mrs. Hargrove found Dalia in the laundry room.

“You must leave now.”

Dalia stared. “Rowan said—”

“Rowan is confronting men who have waited years. They will not wait politely because he asked.”

“Where would I go?”

Mrs. Hargrove pressed a small envelope into her hand.

“North service gate. Car waiting in twelve minutes. Cash, clinic address, new name.”

Dalia looked down at the envelope.

“Did Rowan arrange this?”

Mrs. Hargrove did not answer quickly enough.

Dalia understood.

“No. You did.”

The old woman’s face tightened. “I have served this family for twenty-two years. That is long enough to know when a house is about to eat someone.”

“I can’t leave with the drive.”

“You can and you will.”

“What about Rowan?”

Mrs. Hargrove’s voice cracked. “Rowan was born inside this war. You were not.”

Dalia’s hand moved to her stomach.

Before she could answer, Bobby began barking outside.

Not once.

Not twice.

A furious, desperate sound that shook the walls.

Mrs. Hargrove grabbed Dalia’s wrist. “Run.”

Dalia ran through the service hall, clutching the envelope, her shoes slipping against polished stone. She reached the mudroom, opened the back door, and stepped into rain.

Someone hit her from behind.

The world flashed white.

As she fell, she saw black boots. Enzo’s signet ring. A plastic restraint pulled tight.

May you like

Then a man’s voice near her ear.

“Family sends its apologies.”
