Chapter 9 - THE CHILD CLAIRE BURIED

Claire could not speak for almost a minute.

Adrian watched every trace of color leave her face.

“I never had a baby.”

The words came out barely audible.

Thomas’s recorded video had ended.

The young woman’s terrified face remained frozen on the screen.

Same blue-gray Cole eyes.

Same shape around the mouth Claire had.

Adrian crouched beside his sister.

“Claire.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“You don’t have to—”

“I was sixteen.”

Adrian stopped.

Claire stared at the floor.

Owen had emerged from his room but remained in the hallway.

No one had noticed.

Claire continued.

“I got pregnant when I was sixteen.”

Adrian understood.

“You said you never had a daughter.”

“I didn’t.”

Her voice broke.

“She died.”

Adrian felt the room change.

“What happened?”

Claire pressed both hands against her face.

“I went into labor early. Seven months. My mother took me to a private clinic outside Richmond.”

“Who was the father?”

“A boy from school. Evan Parker. His parents moved him away when they found out.”

“What did your mother tell you?”

“That the baby didn’t survive.”

“Did you see her?”

Claire began crying.

“No.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Oh God.”

“I was sedated. I woke up and Mom said she was gone.”

Marcus was already working.

“What clinic?”

“St. Agnes Women’s Center.”

He typed rapidly.

“Closed in 2012.”

“Doctor?”

“Martin Keller.”

Marcus stopped.

Adrian noticed.

“What?”

“I know that name.”

“From where?”

Marcus turned his laptop.

“Martin Keller was personal physician to Victoria Cole for twenty-six years.”

Claire slowly looked at Adrian.

“No.”

Adrian felt sick.

His mother was tied to a chair because of Thomas.

Yet even now, her secrets were still arriving ahead of her.

Owen stepped into the room.

“Aunt Claire?”

She looked at him.

He walked over and hugged her.

Claire broke completely.

She held him while crying into his shoulder.

Adrian looked away.

Too many stolen children.

Too many adults deciding what truth someone else could survive.

Marcus found archived birth records.

A female infant had been born to Claire Elizabeth Dawson seventeen years earlier.

Birth weight: three pounds, eleven ounces.

Condition: stable after respiratory assistance.

Not dead.

Transferred twelve hours later.

Destination sealed.

Claire stared at the record.

“She lived.”

Adrian touched her shoulder.

“She lived.”

“My mother told me she died.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

They all knew the likely answer.

Because Claire was secretly James Cole’s daughter.

Because her child was another Cole descendant.

Another potential beneficiary.

Another complication.

Marcus dug further.

The transfer authorization had been signed by an attorney.

Richard Sloan.

Claire stood so fast her chair fell.

“He knew.”

Adrian grabbed her arm.

“Claire.”

“He knew!”

“Yes.”

“I’m going to that shipyard.”

“No.”

“That is my daughter.”

“And walking into Thomas’s trap won’t help her.”

Claire turned on him.

“You were willing to go when it was your mother.”

He had no answer.

Owen spoke quietly.

“Then both of you don’t go.”

They looked at him.

The eleven-year-old wiped his eyes.

“Security people go.”

Marcus nodded.

“The kid’s correct.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Owen frowned.

“I’m not a kid.”

“You’re eleven.”

“So?”

Claire laughed through tears.

It gave everyone half a second of relief.

Then they built the operation.

Federal agents surrounded the Baltimore shipyard.

Drones mapped entry points.

Thermal imaging showed five people inside the main warehouse.

Three hostages.

Thomas.

One armed associate.

Adrian studied the floor plan.

“He expects me through the front.”

Marcus nodded.

“He also expects surveillance.”

“Can we communicate with him?”

“Yes.”

“Call.”

Thomas answered video.

His face appeared on the conference screen.

“Adrian.”

“Let them go.”

“Come get them.”

“No.”

Thomas smiled.

“Learning caution.”

“I’ll transfer five hundred million dollars.”

Claire stared at him.

Thomas laughed.

“You think this is about money?”

“Yes.”

“Then you still don’t understand your family.”

“I understand yours. You believe James stole your birthright.”

“He did.”

“Then take me to court.”

“Your family owns the courts.”

“Then go public.”

“I intend to.”

“Why Owen?”

Thomas’s smile vanished.

“Because James’s blood keeps replacing mine.”

There it was.

Not logic.

Obsession.

Adrian leaned closer.

“My father didn’t choose where you were born.”

“He chose to stand on what belonged to me.”

“He was your brother.”

“He was a thief.”

“What about Claire’s daughter?”

Thomas glanced off-camera.

“She proves the family tree.”

“She’s innocent.”

“So was I when my father decided James mattered more.”

Adrian understood now.

Thomas had built his entire identity around being robbed.

Every descendant of James represented the injustice repeating.

“Does she have a name?”

Claire gripped the table.

Thomas looked at her through the camera.

“Hello, niece.”

Claire flinched.

“What is my daughter’s name?”

Thomas smiled.

“Emily.”

Claire began crying again.

“Emily Dawson?”

“No.”

He leaned toward the camera.

“Emily Sloan.”

Everyone froze.

Richard Sloan.

Adrian stared.

Thomas continued.

“Your trusted family attorney raised her.”

Claire looked physically ill.

“That’s impossible.”

“Ask him.”

The camera shifted.

Richard Sloan sat bound nearby.

“Tell her, Richard.”

Sloan’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire moved toward the monitor.

“You raised my daughter?”

Sloan nodded.

“My wife and I couldn’t have children.”

“You told my mother she was dead.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“Victoria.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Claire whispered, “Why?”

Sloan looked at Adrian.

“Victoria had just learned Claire was James’s biological child.”

Claire shook her head.

“She decided a teenage pregnancy could expose everything.”

“So she gave my baby away?”

“Elizabeth agreed.”

Claire stumbled backward.

“My mother agreed?”

“She believed it was best.”

Claire screamed.

“BEST?”

Owen flinched.

Adrian moved beside him.

Claire was shaking.

“Everyone keeps deciding what is best while stealing people’s lives.”

Adrian looked at her.

She was right.

Thomas smiled.

“The Cole family tradition.”

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“You’re no better.”

Thomas’s smile vanished.

“You kidnapped Emily.”

“Yes.”

“You shot at Owen.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to kill me.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t want justice. You want everyone hurt enough to resemble you.”

Thomas stared.

Adrian knew he had landed something.

Behind him, Marcus received a silent signal from federal agents.

Positions ready.

Adrian kept Thomas talking.

“You hated James for being chosen.”

“He was favored.”

“And now you want Owen dead because a dead man’s grandson got something you didn’t.”

Thomas’s face tightened.

“Careful.”

“You’re not avenging your childhood. You’re repeating it.”

Thomas stood.

Marcus whispered, “Keep him near the camera.”

Adrian continued.

“My grandfather chose James.”

“Because my mother was poor.”

“No. Because Samuel Cole was a flawed man who divided his sons.”

“You know nothing.”

“And you turned his mistake into a religion.”

Thomas grabbed the camera.

“I said careful.”

Adrian saw movement behind him.

Emily.

She was watching.

Listening.

Adrian changed direction.

“Emily.”

Thomas turned.

Adrian continued.

“You can hear me?”

Emily nodded slightly.

“Your mother is here.”

Claire rushed toward the screen.

“Emily.”

The young woman started crying.

Claire pressed a hand to the monitor.

“I’m sorry.”

Thomas snapped, “Enough.”

Emily suddenly moved.

She slammed her chair backward into Thomas.

He stumbled.

Federal agents breached.

Explosions thundered.

The video feed spun wildly.

Gunshots.

Claire screamed Emily’s name.

Then the screen went black.

No one breathed.

Thirty seconds.

Forty.

A minute.

Marcus’s radio crackled.

“Hostages located.”

Claire grabbed his arm.

“Emily?”

He listened.

“One female conscious.”

“And?”

“Victoria Cole alive.”

“Sloan?”

Marcus’s face changed.

Adrian knew before he spoke.

“Richard Sloan was shot during the breach.”

“Alive?”

“Critical.”

Another voice came through.

“Thomas Vale fled through an underground service tunnel.”

Adrian slammed his fist onto the table.

Marcus continued listening.

Then looked up.

“They recovered a backpack Thomas left behind.”

“What’s inside?”

“Documents.”

“Which documents?”

“Original Cole patent notebooks.”

Adrian exhaled.

Marcus wasn’t finished.

“And a medical file.”

“Whose?”

He turned pale.

“Grace Bennett’s.”

Adrian froze.

“Why would Thomas have Grace’s medical file?”

Marcus opened a photograph sent from the scene.

The top page showed Grace’s oncology records.

But clipped behind them was a toxicology report.

Claire stared.

“She had cancer.”

“Yes.”

Adrian read the highlighted line.

A drug.

Unfamiliar.

Marcus quickly searched it.

His face hardened.

“What is it?”

“A compound known to accelerate pancreatic cellular damage in animal studies. Experimental. Never approved for human use.”

Adrian felt ice move through his veins.

Claire whispered, “Are you saying someone gave Grace something?”

“We don’t know.”

Adrian looked at the file again.

There was a handwritten note.

Three words.

V.C. AUTHORIZED DELIVERY.

Claire slowly looked at Adrian.

V.C.

Victoria Cole.

His mother had been found alive.

And suddenly being rescued was no longer the most important conversation Adrian needed to have with her.
