Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN BY THE LAKE

They found the boat missing.

Dominic stood at the dock staring across Lake Michigan.

The water was dark beneath an approaching storm.

“Where?”

He turned toward Hargrove.

“Where is Elena?”

Mrs. Hargrove sat on the dock steps while Dr. Shah bandaged her forehead.

“An island property.”

“What island?”

“Not a true island. A private peninsula near the Wisconsin line. Accessible by road, but Victoria uses the lake.”

Dominic grabbed his phone.

“Coordinates.”

Hargrove gave them.

Elias mobilized two boats and a helicopter.

Clara stood beside Noah’s abandoned shoe near the dock.

One tiny sneaker.

It made everything real.

Dominic saw her holding it.

His voice nearly broke.

“I left him.”

“No.”

“I left him in the house.”

“You went looking for his mother.”

“I promised I’d come back.”

“You did.”

“Not fast enough.”

Clara looked at him.

“This isn’t the moment to punish yourself.”

“When is?”

“After you bring Noah home.”

He stared at her.

Then nodded once.

They boarded a boat.

Mrs. Hargrove insisted on going.

Dominic didn’t trust her.

Clara didn’t either.

But Hargrove knew the property.

Wind grew stronger as they traveled north.

Clara had never been on Lake Michigan in bad weather.

It felt less like a lake than an ocean.

The shoreline disappeared.

Waves struck hard.

Dominic stood near the cabin window, Noah’s stuffed dinosaur tucked strangely beneath one arm.

He still carried it.

For Elena.

Clara noticed.

She said nothing.

After forty minutes, Elias pointed.

Lights appeared ahead.

A large modern house stood above the water.

Hargrove whispered, “There.”

The property belonged to a shell company connected to Victoria.

Of course.

They approached without lights.

Dominic’s men moved first.

Clara remained in the boat.

For approximately thirty seconds.

Then she heard Noah scream.

She jumped onto the dock.

Elias turned.

“No.”

“Move.”

“Clara.”

“That’s Noah.”

“Dominic ordered you to stay.”

“Dominic also told me not to speak to Noah this morning.”

Elias stared.

She ran.

The scream came from inside the house.

Clara entered through a broken side door.

The living room was empty.

Then she saw a woman standing at the end of the hall.

Thin.

Dark-haired.

Barefoot.

Clara stopped.

Elena.

She knew instantly.

Older.

Weaker.

A scar crossed one side of her face.

But it was the woman from the photographs.

Elena stared at Clara.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Clara.”

Elena’s eyes moved behind her.

“Dominic?”

“He’s here.”

Elena covered her mouth.

For a second, she looked like she might collapse.

Then Noah screamed again.

Elena changed.

“My son.”

She ran.

Clara followed.

They reached a large room overlooking the lake.

Victoria stood near the windows.

Noah was in her arms.

A man with a gun stood beside them.

“Stop.”

Elena stopped.

Victoria smiled.

“Family reunion.”

Noah fought against her.

“No!”

Victoria tightened her grip.

“Be still.”

“No!”

Clara moved sideways.

The gunman aimed at her.

“Stay.”

She stopped.

Victoria looked at Clara.

“The maid.”

Clara swallowed.

“You know me.”

“You have become irritatingly important.”

Elena stared.

“What did she do?”

Victoria laughed.

“Your son likes her.”

Something flickered across Elena’s face.

Hope.

Victoria saw it.

“Don’t.”

Elena looked at her sister-in-law.

“You had two years.”

“For what?”

“To break me.”

Victoria’s smile faded.

“You think I wanted this?”

“Yes.”

“My father built everything Dominic inherited.”

“Your father built fear.”

“And Dominic got the throne.”

“There it is.”

Victoria’s face twisted.

Clara suddenly understood the center of it.

Not money alone.

Not power alone.

Resentment.

Dominic had inherited authority.

Victoria had inherited her father’s bitterness.

“You were always angry he chose Elena,” Clara said.

Victoria looked at her.

“Nobody asked you.”

“No. That seems to be a problem in this family.”

The gunman moved toward Clara.

Victoria lifted a hand.

“Wait.”

Clara had her attention.

Good.

Keep it.

Elena noticed.

Clara could see it.

She continued.

“August wanted Dominic to marry someone useful. Instead he chose a teacher.”

Victoria’s expression sharpened.

“My brother weakened himself.”

“He became happy.”

“You know nothing about him.”

“I know you couldn’t stand that he loved something you couldn’t control.”

Victoria’s face hardened.

“Shut up.”

Noah looked toward Clara.

She smiled at him.

Small.

Calm.

The way she had on the marble floor.

“I’m right here.”

Victoria shook him.

“Noah, stop looking at her.”

“No!”

The gunman glanced toward Victoria.

That was the opening.

Elena lunged.

She hit Victoria from the side.

Noah fell free.

Clara ran.

The gunman turned toward her.

A shot exploded.

Glass shattered.

Dominic entered from the hallway.

The gunman dropped his weapon after Elias struck him.

Clara reached Noah.

He slammed into her arms.

She held him.

“I’ve got you.”

Noah sobbed.

Across the room, Dominic saw Elena.

Everything stopped again.

Two years.

A grave.

A marriage turned into memory.

And now she stood ten feet away.

Alive.

Dominic whispered, “Elena.”

Her face collapsed.

“Dom.”

He crossed the distance.

He touched her face as though afraid she might vanish.

Elena closed her eyes against his hand.

Then he pulled her into his arms.

Noah saw them.

“Mommy!”

Elena turned.

The sound she made was half sob, half laugh.

Clara released Noah.

He ran.

Elena dropped to her knees.

Noah crashed into her.

She wrapped him in both arms.

“My baby.”

“Mommy.”

“I’m here.”

“Mommy.”

“I’m here.”

Dominic knelt beside them.

For several seconds the three held each other.

Clara stepped away.

It felt wrong to watch.

Then Victoria laughed.

Everyone turned.

She sat on the floor near the shattered window.

Blood marked her lip.

But she was smiling.

“You think this ends because you found her?”

Dominic stood.

“Yes.”

“No.”

Victoria looked at Elena.

“Tell him.”

Elena went still.

Dominic noticed.

“Tell me what?”

Elena shook her head.

Victoria smiled wider.

“She didn’t stay gone because I locked her in rooms.”

Dominic looked at his wife.

“Elena?”

Victoria continued.

“She stayed gone because she discovered what your father really left you.”

“Stop.”

Elena’s voice shook.

Victoria laughed.

“The charities. The holding companies. The judges. The police. The children.”

Dominic stared.

“What children?”

Elena closed her eyes.

Clara’s stomach tightened.

Victoria looked directly at Dominic.

“Your empire didn’t just move money.”

She nodded toward Hargrove, who had entered behind Elias.

“Ask her.”

Dominic turned.

Mrs. Hargrove looked suddenly old.

“What children?”

Hargrove said nothing.

Dominic’s voice rose.

“What children?”

May you like

Elena finally whispered:

“The ones your father took.”
