Chapter 7 - The House Belonged to the Traitor

Roman stopped the tugboat himself.
“We go back.”
Claire stared.
“To the mansion?”
“Delaney raised me.”
“She’ll be guarded.”
“I know.”
“Malcolm wants you there.”
“I know.”
Eli clung to Roman’s coat.
“Dad.”
Roman looked down.
The fear in Eli’s face ended the argument before Claire could.
Roman crouched.
“I’m not leaving you.”
“But Mrs. Delaney—”
“I’m going to help her.”
“With me?”
Roman hesitated.
Claire said, “Lena.”
Roman looked at her.
“If we can get Eli back to Lena—”
“No.”
Eli shook his head violently.
“No doctors. No houses. I’m staying with you.”
Roman closed his eyes.
The boy had lost his belief in safe places.
Claire knelt.
“What if I stay with you?”
Eli looked at her.
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
Roman looked unhappy.
But he nodded.
Julian regained consciousness during the ambulance ride.
Police had finally arrived in force.
Roman gave them only enough information to take Julian into custody and seal Terminal 14.
The full evidence went directly to federal investigators through Lena.
Julian stared at Roman through the ambulance doors.
“You saved me.”
Roman’s face hardened.
“Don’t confuse that with forgiveness.”
“I didn’t know Malcolm would hurt Eli.”
“You knew enough.”
Julian looked at Eli.
“I’m sorry.”
Eli hid behind Claire.
Roman’s voice became quiet.
“You’ll spend the rest of your life learning how little those words weigh.”
They left him.
Daphne agreed to surrender to federal agents in exchange for protection and testimony.
Celeste went in another ambulance under guard.
Before leaving, she told Claire something important.
“Malcolm has people at the house.”
“How many?”
“Enough.”
“Why Mrs. Delaney?”
Celeste smiled bitterly.
“She knows the old passages.”
Claire’s stomach dropped.
Malcolm wanted the one advantage Roman still had.
The secret architecture of Archer House.
Roman understood immediately.
“He’s not holding her there.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“He’s using her to get somewhere.”
“Where?”
Roman looked toward the city.
“The original family vault.”
The mansion had been built by Roman’s great-grandfather.
Beneath it sat a private vault containing family documents, property deeds, old ledgers, and sealed corporate records.
Malcolm didn’t just want to destroy evidence.
He wanted Charles Archer’s original ledgers.
If investigators found them, the entire organization would unravel.
Roman took Claire and Eli to an FBI staging point.
The federal agent in charge was Special Agent Naomi Grant.
Sharp-eyed.
Direct.
Unimpressed by Roman’s money.
Claire liked her too.
“We can raid the house,” Naomi said.
Roman shook his head.
“Malcolm knows every tactical protocol my security teams ever trained with.”
“We aren’t your security team.”
“He trained with federal contractors.”
Naomi frowned.
“You’re saying he’ll predict us.”
“I’m saying he built half the mansion’s modern defensive systems.”
Claire asked, “What if he doesn’t know we’re coming?”
Naomi looked at her.
“He knows Roman wants Delaney back.”
“I didn’t say Roman.”
Everyone turned.
Claire continued.
“Malcolm expects Roman Archer. SUVs. Guns. Security. Authority.”
She looked at Roman.
“He doesn’t expect the barefoot woman who ruined his night.”
Roman stared.
“No.”
Claire sighed.
“Here we go.”
“No.”
“I can get inside through the carriage-house passage.”
“Absolutely not.”
“You showed me.”
“Which I regret.”
Naomi interrupted.
“She has a point.”
Roman looked offended.
“You’re supposed to be federal law enforcement.”
“I am. That’s why I recognize a point.”
The plan formed.
Federal teams would surround the estate but hold position.
Claire would enter through the old service passage with a small body camera.
Roman would remain outside.
That lasted twelve seconds.
Roman said, “I’m going with her.”
Naomi rubbed her forehead.
“Fine.”
Eli stayed with Lena and two federal agents.
Before Roman left, Eli grabbed his hand.
“Bring Delaney back.”
“I will.”
“And Claire.”
Roman looked at her.
“Yes.”
Eli swallowed.
“Bring Claire back too.”
Roman squeezed his son’s hand.
“I will.”
They entered Archer House at 8:43 a.m.
Daylight had come gray and cold.
The secret tunnel felt different now.
Not like an escape route.
Like a vein leading straight into the heart of a poisoned body.
Claire whispered, “You okay?”
Roman gave her a look.
“That question usually goes the other direction.”
“You’ve had a bad night.”
“So have you.”
“I don’t own the building where everyone is trying to kill us.”
“Technical advantage.”
They reached the library.
Empty.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
Roman opened the fireplace panel.
Claire stopped him.
“Wait.”
A thin wire crossed the floor.
Tripwire.
Roman followed it.
Grenade.
His face hardened.
“Malcolm.”
They stepped over it.
More traps appeared.
Not designed for random employees.
Designed for Roman.
He knew which doors Roman used.
Which staircases.
Which rooms.
Malcolm had spent thirteen years learning his employer.
They reached the basement.
Voices.
Mrs. Delaney cried out.
Roman moved toward the sound.
Claire grabbed him.
“Trap.”
“I know.”
“How do you know?”
“He wants me angry.”
They took another passage.
It led behind the old wine cellar.
Through a vent, they saw Malcolm.
Three armed men.
Mrs. Delaney tied to a chair.
And a massive steel door behind them.
The family vault.
Malcolm held a drill.
“Code,” he demanded.
Mrs. Delaney shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“You opened this for Charles.”
“Twenty years ago.”
“Code.”
“I don’t know!”
Malcolm slapped her.
Roman’s entire body tightened.
Claire pressed a hand against his chest.
“Not yet.”
His heart hammered beneath her palm.
Malcolm paced.
“Roman always loved you.”
Mrs. Delaney glared at him.
“You say that like it was a weakness.”
“He trusts people.”
“He trusted you.”
Malcolm smiled.
“Exactly.”
Roman looked away.
Claire whispered, “He wants to hurt you before you even enter.”
Roman nodded.
They retreated through the passage.
Naomi’s voice came softly through Claire’s earpiece.
“Teams ready.”
Roman whispered, “South basement entrance. Three armed. Possible explosives.”
Naomi confirmed.
Claire pointed toward a second hidden door.
“Where?”
“Vault corridor.”
They crawled through.
Behind the steel vault was a maintenance shaft.
Roman removed a panel.
Inside the vault, shelves stretched floor to ceiling.
Boxes.
Ledgers.
Documents.
Roman stared.
“My father’s real history.”
Claire looked at the labels.
Companies dating back decades.
Malcolm wasn’t trying to enter for money.
He was trying to erase everything.
Roman found an old ventilation lever.
“What does that do?”
“Opens pressure vents.”
“And?”
“Maybe makes noise.”
He pulled it.
A steel vent crashed open inside the corridor.
Malcolm shouted.
Federal agents breached from two sides.
Chaos exploded.
Roman opened the vault from within.
One of Malcolm’s men turned.
Claire hit the floor.
Roman fired.
Naomi’s team rushed in.
Mrs. Delaney screamed.
Malcolm grabbed her and pulled a gun to her head.
“Back!”
Everyone froze.
Roman stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Malcolm smiled.
“Finally.”
“You want me.”
“I want the ledgers.”
“You can’t leave with them.”
“Then nobody leaves.”
He raised a detonator.
Naomi whispered, “Bomb.”
Malcolm looked at Roman.
“Your father understood something you never did.”
Roman’s voice was calm.
“What?”
“People obey fear.”
Mrs. Delaney suddenly laughed.
Malcolm frowned.
“What’s funny?”
The old woman looked at him.
“You worked for Charles Archer thirteen years and never learned the truth?”
“What truth?”
She smiled.
“He was terrified of Roman.”
Malcolm’s expression changed.
Mrs. Delaney stomped on his foot.
He flinched.
Roman moved.
The shot hit the ceiling.
Naomi tackled Malcolm.
The detonator fell.
Claire kicked it beneath a cabinet.
Federal agents swarmed.
Within seconds, Malcolm Reed was face-down on the floor.
Handcuffed.
Roman rushed to Delaney.
“You okay?”
She touched his cheek.
“You took your time.”
Roman laughed.
Then hugged her.
Claire looked around.
Maybe it was over.
Julian arrested.
Celeste arrested.
Malcolm arrested.
Evidence recovered.
Eli safe.
Then Naomi picked up Malcolm’s phone.
Her expression changed.
“Roman.”
He looked up.
“There’s a live camera feed.”
She turned the screen.
Eli sat in Lena’s clinic.
Lena stood nearby.
Federal agents guarded the door.
Roman frowned.
“So?”
Naomi pointed.
The timestamp was live.
Then a man entered the frame.
One of the federal agents turned.
The man shot him.
Roman stopped breathing.
A second agent fell.
Lena screamed.
The camera shook.
Then someone stepped close enough for his face to fill the screen.
An older man.
White hair.
Thin face.
Roman whispered, “No.”
Claire looked at him.
“Who is that?”
Roman’s voice cracked.
“My father’s brother.”
Silas Archer.
The uncle nobody had mentioned.
The man legally declared dead five years earlier after a boating accident.
On the screen, Silas smiled.
“Hello, Roman.”
Behind him, Eli was dragged from his chair.
Silas continued.
“You’ve spent all night arresting employees.”
May you like
His smile widened.
“Now come meet the owner.”
