Chapter 18 - The Trap Springs

The immediate fallout of the City Hall revelation was a political earthquake. Alderman Miller was arrested by federal agents before he could even leave the building, and the St. Louis zoning injunction was instantly thrown out.

But Silas Vance was not a man to go quietly into the night.

Two hours after the meeting, as the storm clouds gathered over Chicago, Vincent’s encrypted phone rang. It was Rocco.

"Vincent, they’re moving!" Rocco shouted over the sound of wind and rain. "Silas’s men... they’ve taken the St. Louis terminal site by force. They’ve locked the gates and are preparing to destroy the foundations with heavy machinery. They want to make the site physically unusable before the federal marshals can seize their assets!"

"Where are you?" Vincent asked, his voice dropping to a low, commanding register.

"I’m three miles out with ten of our security team," Rocco replied. "But Silas has at least thirty men on-site. It’s a slaughterhouse if we go in without backup."

"Hold your position, Rocco," Vincent commanded. "I’m coming to you."

"Vincent, no!" Tessa said, grabbing his arm as he hung up the phone. "The storm is too bad, and your leg—"

"Tessa," Vincent said, turning to look at her with an intensity that made her breath hitch. "Silas isn't just trying to destroy our company. He’s trying to destroy our name. He’s trying to prove that the Corvino name has no power without the gun. If I don't face him tonight, we will spend the rest of our lives running from his shadow."

Tessa looked at him, seeing the absolute, unyielding determination in his eyes. She knew she couldn't stop him. "Then I’m coming with you."

"No," Vincent said, his voice softening as he placed his hand over hers. "I need you here, Tessa. I need you to coordinate with the federal authorities. If Silas’s men destroy that site, we lose everything. You are the mind of this family. I am the shield. Let me do my job."

Tessa closed her eyes, her forehead resting against his chest. "Come back to me, Vincent. Come back to the kitchen."

"Always, mia cara," he whispered, kissing her deeply before turning and disappearing into the pouring rain.
