Chapter 5 - Madeline’s Box

The servant passage had been built before Sebastian was born.

He had known about several hidden stairways in the estate.

Not this one.

Eli did.

Maya followed him through the narrow darkness.

Sebastian walked behind them with a flashlight.

“Where did you learn this?” he whispered.

Eli looked over his shoulder.

“Mommy.”

Madeline.

Sebastian’s heart tightened.

She must have shown Eli the passage as a game.

Or as a hiding place.

Maybe both.

The tunnel descended behind the walls and opened near an unused music room on the first floor.

Eli crossed the room.

He stopped beside an old grand piano.

Then pointed underneath.

“Mommy box.”

Sebastian knelt.

Hidden beneath a loose floorboard was a steel document case.

He recognized it immediately.

Madeline had used the case for foundation records.

She told him she lost it months before she died.

Sebastian carried it to the desk.

The combination lock required six digits.

Maya looked at Eli.

“Do you know?”

The boy touched the scar near his ear.

Then said, “Birthday.”

Sebastian entered Eli’s birthday.

The lock opened.

Inside lay an old phone.

Three envelopes.

Corporate documents.

A small external drive.

A photograph of Sebastian holding newborn Eli.

And a letter.

For Sebastian.

His wife’s handwriting.

Sebastian stared at it without touching it.

Maya turned away instinctively.

“You should read that alone.”

“No.”

His voice surprised her.

Sebastian looked at Eli.

“Whatever she wrote belongs to him too.”

He opened the letter.

Sebastian,

If you are reading this, then I either found the courage to tell you everything or I did not get the chance.

Gabriel has been stealing from the companies.

I know you will want to believe there is another explanation.

I wanted one too.

There isn’t.

The worst part is not the money.

He has forged your approvals, used your name and built relationships with people who believe they are protected by you.

If this becomes public without evidence, he will make you look responsible.

That is why I have been quiet.

I’m sorry.

Sebastian stopped.

His vision blurred.

He continued.

There is something else.

Gabriel knows I discovered him.

He has begun asking questions about the family trust.

Specifically, what happens if you are considered incapable of running the companies and Eli is still a minor.

I know how dramatic this sounds.

Please don’t dismiss it because you love him.

I know you love him.

I loved him too.

That is what makes betrayal dangerous.

We rarely guard the doors opened by people we trust.

Sebastian sat down.

Maya felt the hairs rise along her arms.

The Blackwood family trust named three successor trustees.

Madeline.

Then Gabriel.

Then an outside bank.

With Madeline dead, Gabriel stood immediately behind Sebastian.

If Sebastian became medically incapacitated, Gabriel would control the voting shares until Eli reached adulthood.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Madeline had understood.

Gabriel’s theft was not the endgame.

It was preparation.

Eli’s diagnosis mattered because Gabriel needed the heir to appear permanently unstable.

Sebastian’s grief mattered because he needed the father to appear incapable.

The hidden room.

The false medical reports.

The sedatives.

The constant nanny turnover.

Every crisis pushed the same story.

The Blackwood family was collapsing.

Gabriel was the responsible man holding the empire together.

Sebastian finished the letter.

Trust Eli.

Whatever he remembers, trust him.

He notices more than adults think.

And Sebastian?

If I am wrong, forgive me.

If I am right, protect our boy before you protect the company.

Love always,

M.

Sebastian pressed the paper against his mouth.

For several seconds he could not move.

Eli approached.

His father had cried at Madeline’s funeral.

Once.

Behind a locked door.

He had not allowed his son to see.

Now he did.

Eli touched Sebastian’s sleeve.

“Daddy sad?”

Sebastian nodded.

“Yes.”

“Mommy?”

“Yes.”

Eli climbed awkwardly into his lap.

Sebastian froze.

His son had not done that since before the crash.

Then he wrapped both arms around him.

Sebastian broke.

He held Eli carefully.

“I’m sorry.”

The words came repeatedly.

“I’m so sorry.”

Maya stepped into the hallway.

She gave them privacy.

Several minutes later, Martin appeared.

Emergency systems had been restored.

The broken library window had not been an entry point.

It had been a distraction.

Someone had remotely released the latch while attempting to make security think the estate had been breached.

“Gabriel?” Sebastian asked.

“Almost certainly.”

“Location?”

“Unknown.”

Detective Ruiz entered behind him.

“We have officers heading to his house.”

Sebastian handed her the letter.

Ruiz read quickly.

“This changes the financial motive.”

Martin connected Madeline’s external drive.

The files were encrypted.

The phone was not.

It contained photographs of documents.

Messages with Detective Ruiz.

And one unsent video.

Madeline appeared on-screen sitting inside her SUV.

It was daytime.

She looked tired.

“If you’re seeing this,” she said, “I probably got scared enough to finally start documenting everything.”

Sebastian stared.

“I followed Gabriel this morning.”

The camera turned toward a warehouse.

“He met with Dr. Adrian Mercer.”

Maya looked at Sebastian.

Mercer had been connected before the crash.

Madeline continued.

“I don’t know why a psychiatrist is involved in company business. But I heard Gabriel say something about ‘fitness evaluations’ and the trust.”

The video ended.

Ruiz whispered, “They planned this before she died.”

Martin’s phone buzzed.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked at Sebastian.

“Police reached Gabriel’s house.”

“And?”

“He’s gone.”

Ruiz asked, “Airport?”

“Private jet hasn’t moved.”

Maya spoke softly.

“What about Dr. Mercer?”

Martin checked another message.

Mercer had been placed in a guest office under guard.

Except now the guard outside that room was unconscious.

Not badly injured.

But Mercer was gone.

Sebastian looked toward the dark windows.

Gabriel and Mercer were both missing.

Maya’s face changed.

“My family.”

Sebastian turned.

“What?”

“If Gabriel knows who I am, he knows where I live.”

Martin immediately began issuing orders.

Maya grabbed her phone.

No signal.

Then it rang.

Her sister’s name appeared.

Maya answered.

“Lena?”

Static.

Then her fourteen-year-old sister whispered:

“Maya, there’s a black car outside.”

Maya stopped breathing.

A male voice spoke in the background.

“Ask your sister if she found Madeline’s box.”

The line went dead.

Sebastian’s expression became murderous.

Maya stared at him.

“They know.”

Eli tightened his hand around hers.

May you like

And Sebastian understood Gabriel had just made the worst mistake of his life.

He had brought Maya’s family into the war.
