Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT SOPHIA STOPPED RUNNING

There are two kinds of courage.

The kind people applaud is loud.

Charging into danger.

Standing beneath gunfire.

Refusing to bend.

The other kind is quieter.

It is saying no to the person who taught you that no would always hurt.

Sophia stood in the darkened farmhouse with bullets hitting the walls and told me she wanted to speak to her father.

Absolutely not.

That was my first thought.

Then I remembered what I'd told her.

You choose.

Promises only matter when keeping them becomes inconvenient.

"What do you want to do?" I asked.

Marco looked at me like I'd lost my mind.

Sophia looked toward Lucia.

Her mother was pale but steady.

"I want him to hear me."

"From inside."

"Fine."

I handed Sophia the phone connected to the farmhouse security system.

Dominic had prepared the property better than it looked.

Steel shutters.

Reinforced walls.

Cameras hidden in the trees.

Two escape routes.

Vittorio wasn't storming an isolated farmhouse.

He'd driven into a box.

I activated the exterior speaker.

Sophia held the phone.

Her hand shook.

"Father."

The gunfire stopped.

Vittorio's amplified voice answered.

"Sophia."

"You found me."

"Come outside."

"No."

A pause.

"Don't behave foolishly."

Sophia closed her eyes.

That phrase.

I saw the effect immediately.

Old training.

Old fear.

Then she opened them again.

"I said no."

Outside, one of Vittorio's men moved between vehicles.

Marco tracked him through a narrow firing slit.

Vittorio's voice hardened.

"You have no idea what's happening."

"I know about the trust."

Silence.

"I know about Saint Michael's."

More silence.

"I know about Mother."

This time something changed outside.

Men moved.

Vittorio hadn't known Lucia would be here.

Sophia continued.

"I know you lied about her death."

"Sophia, listen to me."

"No."

That single word seemed more powerful than every weapon in the house.

"You listen."

Lucia covered her mouth.

Sophia's voice shook, but she didn't stop.

"You told me she died because she was sick. You told me I was difficult. You told me I caused problems. You sent me to Saint Michael's because I ran six blocks trying to find a police officer."

Lucia looked at her sharply.

Sophia had never told her that.

"I was thirteen," Sophia continued. "I didn't run because I was wild. I ran because Enzo broke my door after I locked it."

My attention moved to her.

She had never told me that either.

"You punished me for being afraid," she said. "And every time you hurt me, you told me it was because I embarrassed the family."

Vittorio finally answered.

"I gave you everything."

Sophia laughed.

"What?"

"Everything you have came from me."

"No. Everything I have survived you."

Marco glanced at me.

Even in that moment, he looked impressed.

Vittorio shouted, "Enough!"

Sophia flinched.

Then straightened.

"No."

He threatened Isabella.

Sophia told him Isabella was safe.

He threatened Lucia.

Sophia told him Lucia was protected.

Then he tried me.

"That man will eventually show you what he is."

Sophia looked at me.

I expected uncertainty.

Instead she said, "He already did."

Vittorio sounded triumphant.

"And?"

"The first night I met him, he had every opportunity to prove you right."

My chest tightened.

"He didn't."

Vittorio went silent.

Sophia's voice became quieter.

"You made me terrified of my husband because you were afraid he'd show me I didn't have to be terrified of you."

No one spoke.

Even outside, the men seemed frozen.

Then Vittorio made the mistake that destroyed his remaining control.

"You are my daughter."

Sophia answered, "That doesn't make me your property."

A gunshot exploded.

Not toward the house.

Toward one of our exterior cameras.

"Time's up," Marco said.

The Bellucci men started advancing.

I took the phone.

"Vittorio."

"Matteo."

"You've made several poor decisions today."

"You stole my daughter."

"She came voluntarily."

"She belongs with her family."

"She is with her family."

Sophia looked at Lucia.

Vittorio cursed.

Then the attack started.

Two men moved from the left.

Three from the right.

Marco fired warning shots into the ground near the first group.

"Last chance!" I shouted through the speaker.

Vittorio's answer was automatic gunfire toward the second-floor windows.

So much for diplomacy.

We returned fire.

Not wildly.

Not to kill unless necessary.

The goal was to hold until the New York State Police arrived.

That surprised Marco when I told him.

"Police?"

"Vittorio has spent years buying local officials. Let's find out which ones he doesn't own."

Dominic had already sent the tapes and ledgers to three attorneys and a federal prosecutor.

Once digital copies existed in places Vittorio couldn't reach, killing us achieved nothing.

That was the advantage of evidence over bullets.

Evidence multiplied.

The standoff lasted fourteen minutes.

Then sirens came through the mountains.

Vittorio's men started retreating.

One SUV reversed.

Another turned.

Vittorio stayed.

He stepped from behind a vehicle and walked toward the porch alone.

Hands visible.

"No gun!" Marco called.

Vittorio removed his pistol and dropped it.

Sophia stared through the security monitor.

"What is he doing?"

"Trying another tactic."

Vittorio stopped twenty feet from the house.

"Sophia."

She didn't answer.

"I only want to talk."

She looked at me.

"Your choice."

That mattered.

Every time.

She opened the reinforced front door but remained behind the inner steel gate.

I stayed several feet back.

Vittorio saw Lucia.

Whatever composure he'd carried vanished.

"You."

Lucia stepped beside Sophia.

"Hello, Vittorio."

He looked as though he'd seen a corpse rise.

"You're dead."

"No."

"I saw—"

"You saw what Dominic wanted you to see."

His gaze moved toward Dominic.

"You traitor."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"I learned from the best."

Sirens grew louder.

Vittorio turned to Sophia.

"We can fix this."

Sophia stared at him.

"There is no we."

"I protected you."

"You imprisoned me."

"I raised you."

"You controlled me."

"I am your father."

Sophia's eyes filled.

"That was supposed to mean something."

For the first time, Vittorio seemed uncertain.

Then he lowered his voice.

"If you do this, Enzo goes down too."

Sophia swallowed.

He saw it.

He pressed.

"Your brother will spend the rest of his life in prison. Teresa too. Employees. Friends. People you've known since childhood."

Sophia's face changed.

Guilt.

His favorite weapon.

"You'll destroy the family."

She looked at me.

I didn't answer for her.

After several seconds, she turned back.

"No."

Vittorio's eyes narrowed.

"You destroyed it."

Police vehicles tore into the property.

Men shouted.

Weapons lowered.

Vittorio looked around.

Then at Sophia.

He realized it was over.

Or I thought he did.

Suddenly his hand went inside his jacket.

Marco shouted.

I moved toward Sophia.

A gun appeared.

Not the one Vittorio dropped.

A second pistol.

He pointed it through the gate.

At Lucia.

Sophia screamed.

I fired.

The bullet struck Vittorio's arm.

His gun dropped.

State troopers tackled him before he hit the ground.

Lucia pulled Sophia back.

For several seconds all I heard was shouting.

Then Sophia turned toward me.

My gun was still raised.

She looked at Vittorio bleeding on the ground.

Then at me.

"You could have killed him."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you?"

I lowered the weapon.

"Because I thought you might want him alive long enough to hear you win."

Something in her expression broke.

She crossed the room and wrapped both arms around me.

No hesitation.

No flinch.

No fear.

I held her gently.

Outside, her father was handcuffed.

Inside, her mother was alive.

And for the first time, Sophia Bellucci chose to be held by me.

It should have felt like victory.

It lasted less than ten seconds.

Marco's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He listened.

Then looked at me.

"Matteo."

Sophia slowly released me.

"What happened?"

Marco lowered the phone.

"Vittorio wasn't the only one making moves tonight."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"Enzo."

"Where is he?"

Marco looked at Sophia.

"New York."

May you like

Then at me.

"He took your sister."
