Chapter 5 - Rosa’s SecretRosa sat at Camila’s kitchen table with both hands wrapped around a glass of water she did not drink.

She looked smaller outside the grand house where Camila had always seen her moving silently through rooms, carrying trays, gathering plates, lowering her eyes whenever Daniel’s mother criticized the placement of flowers or the temperature of soup.

Now, without the uniform apron and stiff white collar, Rosa looked like what she was: a tired woman in her fifties who had lost her job for witnessing the wrong truth.

Daniel closed the curtains.

Camila locked the front door.

Lucía was already on video call, her face serious on Daniel’s laptop.

“Rosa,” Lucía said gently, “before you say anything more, I need you to understand that telling the truth may involve police and court. You do not have to speak without your own legal support.”

Rosa gave a small, bitter smile.

“Señora, I have worked for that family twelve years. I know what silence costs.”

Camila’s throat tightened.

Rosa placed the memory card on the table.

“I put a small camera in the kitchen pantry three months ago,” she said.

Daniel frowned. “Why?”

Rosa looked ashamed.

“Because money kept disappearing from my purse. Small amounts. Two hundred pesos. Five hundred. I thought maybe one of the temporary workers. I wanted proof before accusing anyone.”

“And it recorded the patio?” Camila asked.

“Not all. But the pantry door was open during the party. The camera faces the kitchen entrance and part of the courtyard. It has sound.”

Sound.

The word changed the air in the room.

Daniel inserted the card into his laptop.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then folders appeared.

Rosa leaned forward and pointed to one marked with the date.

“That one.”

Daniel opened it.

The video was grainier than the security footage, taken from a low angle near shelves of canned tomatoes and cleaning supplies. Through the open pantry door, the patio appeared in partial view. The stone table. The chairs. Mariela’s blue dress. Sofia’s yellow one.

The audio crackled.

At first, there was ordinary party noise. Plates. Adult laughter. Iker complaining about his toy.

Then Sofia’s small voice.

“Truck?”

Camila covered her mouth.

Iker shouted. Mariela’s voice cut through.

“Don’t touch his things.”

Camila’s own voice followed, calm and apologetic. “Sofia, come here, sweetheart.”

Then Mariela said something that had not been visible on the silent security footage.

“I told you not to bring her near my son.”

Daniel went rigid.

On the video, Camila replied, “She is two, Mariela. She only touched the toy.”

Mariela’s voice sharpened.

“She touches everything. She looks at everything like she belongs here.”

Then came the scrape of a chair.

Camila whispered, “No.”

The cup left Mariela’s hand.

Sofia screamed.

But this time, the horror did not end there.

Daniel’s mother shouted, “Enough! Get that child out of my house before the guests hear!”

Camila’s voice broke through, panicked. “Water! I need water! Please!”

Daniel’s father roared, “Take her outside!”

Rosa appeared in the frame rushing from the kitchen with a towel. Daniel’s mother blocked her.

“Do not get involved,” she snapped.

Rosa froze.

Camila sobbed Sofia’s name.

Then Mariela said, breathless and furious, “This is what happens when people don’t teach their children boundaries.”

Daniel slammed the laptop shut.

The room went silent except for Rosa’s quiet crying.

Camila stared at the closed computer.

She had remembered screaming. She had remembered the heat. She had remembered the panic.

But hearing herself begging for water while Daniel’s mother stopped the only person trying to help Sofia made the memory open again, raw and bleeding.

Daniel stood abruptly and walked to the sink.

He gripped the counter with both hands.

For a moment, Camila thought he might be sick.

“Open it,” she said.

He turned.

“Camila—”

“Open it. We need to finish watching.”

His eyes were red.

But he obeyed.

The rest of the recording showed chaos. Camila lifting Sofia. Daniel’s father ordering the gate opened. His mother telling Mariela to take Iker inside. Rosa whispering, “She needs a doctor,” before Daniel’s mother hissed, “You work here, Rosa. Remember that.”

Lucía said nothing until the video ended.

Then she exhaled.

“This is very important evidence.”

Rosa wiped her cheeks. “I copied it before they fired me. They searched my bag, but not my shoes.”

Daniel turned from the laptop.

“They searched your bag?”

Rosa nodded. “Señor Ernesto said if I spoke, he would tell everyone I stole from the family. He said no one believes maids over respectable people.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Camila knew that look now.

Another piece of him separating forever.

Lucía asked Rosa if she would give a statement. Rosa said yes, but fear trembled under the word.

“They know where my sister lives,” Rosa whispered. “My daughter works in a pharmacy near their church. They can make trouble.”

Lucía nodded. “We can request protective measures and include the retaliation in the complaint.”

Rosa looked at Camila.

“I am sorry,” she said. “I should have pushed past Señora Valeria. I should have helped.”

Camila reached across the table and took Rosa’s hand.

“You tried.”

“I stopped.”

“You were afraid.”

Rosa broke then, silently, shoulders shaking.

Camila held her hand until the shaking eased.

Later, after Lucía arranged to meet Rosa in person the next morning, Daniel drove Rosa to her sister’s apartment using side streets. Camila stayed home with Sofia, who had woken feverish and irritable.

Every cry tore at her.

Every dressing change felt like a betrayal because healing hurt too.

At 10:42 p.m., Camila’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She ignored it.

A voicemail appeared.

Against Lucía’s instructions, she listened.

Mariela’s voice filled the room, low and shaking.

“You think you won because you have a video? You don’t know what you’re doing, Camila. You have no idea what Daniel will lose. My parents will destroy him before they let you destroy me. And when Sofia grows up, she’ll know her mother was the reason her father had nothing.”

Camila saved the voicemail.

Her hand did not shake this time.

Daniel returned near midnight.

She played it for him.

He listened without interrupting. When the message ended, he sat beside Camila on the couch and looked toward the stairs where Sofia slept.

“I need to tell you something,” he said.

Camila’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

“My father called the company board.”

Camila stared at him. “Your company?”

Daniel nodded.

Daniel worked as operations director at a manufacturing firm partly owned by his father’s investment group. Camila had always known the connection made him uncomfortable, but Daniel had insisted the job was separate from family.

Apparently, nothing was separate.

“He told them I’m emotionally unstable,” Daniel said. “That I stole private property. That I may have created legal exposure for the family.”

Camila felt cold spread through her chest.

“Can they fire you?”

“They can try.”

“Daniel…”

He took her hand.

“I chose this when I went back for the footage.”

“No,” she said fiercely. “Mariela chose this when she hurt Sofia.”

Daniel’s expression softened.

Then his phone rang.

This time it was his boss.

Daniel answered on speaker.

“Daniel,” the man said, voice stiff. “I need you at the office tomorrow morning at eight. There are concerns we need to discuss.”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“I’ll be there.”

After he hung up, Camila looked at him.

May you like

Daniel smiled faintly, exhausted but steady.

“They want to take my job,” he said. “Let them try.”
