Chapter 9 - The Recording
Philippa had used a private financial advisor to move funds.
That advisor had recorded meetings for compliance.
Evelyn obtained copies.
The first recording was ordinary.
The second wasn't.
Philippa's voice filled the room.
“Alexander will never challenge me.”
My hands went cold.
Another voice answered.
“What if Claire discovers the trust?”
“She won't.”
“And Isla?”
“She'll never know what belongs to her.”
I covered my mouth.
Then Philippa said the sentence that changed everything.
“By the time the girl turns seven, there won't be enough left for anyone to fight over.”
Renata looked at me.
I couldn't speak.
The recording continued.
“She thinks she's protecting her marriage.”
Philippa laughed.
“She doesn't understand that Alexander belongs to this family before he belongs to her.”
I shut my eyes.
There it was.
Seven years of manipulation.
Every dinner.
Every insult.
Every holiday.
Every time Alexander told me to ignore his mother.
It hadn't been random.
It had been strategy.
Then the recording became worse.
The advisor asked:
“What about the signature?”
Philippa answered:
“Claire will assume she signed it.”
My chair scraped backward.
“She knew.”
Evelyn nodded.
“She knew the signature was forged.”
Then another voice entered the recording.
Alexander.
My husband.
I froze.
He sounded younger.
Angry.
“Mom, I don't want to be involved.”
Philippa replied:
“You already are.”
Then Alexander said:
“I never agreed to take Isla's money.”
Philippa's voice became cold.
“You don't have to agree.”
The recording ended.
I stared at Alexander.
He had lied by omission.
But he had not participated in the theft.
That distinction mattered.
It didn't erase the betrayal.
But it mattered.
Evelyn leaned forward.
“There's enough here to dismantle her case.”
“Can we recover the money?”
“Some.”
“How much?”
“Most of it.”
I exhaled.
Then Evelyn said:
“But there's one account we haven't found.”

“What account?”
“The largest one.”
