Chapter 11 - The Airport

Philippa disappeared the next morning.
Her house was empty.
Her car was gone.
Her assistant wouldn't answer.
Her attorney claimed he didn't know where she was.
But Renata found something.
A flight reservation.
Philippa was scheduled to leave the country that night.
We contacted authorities through Evelyn.
At the airport, Philippa looked completely calm.
She wore a navy coat.
She carried one suitcase.
When officers approached her, she smiled.
“Is there a problem?”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Yes.”
Philippa looked at me.
Then at Alexander.
Then she laughed.
“You actually think you can stop me?”
I looked at her.
“No.”
Her smile faded.
“Then what are you doing here?”
“I came to tell you something.”
“What?”
“Isla still has her grandfather's money.”
Philippa's face changed.
“You're lying.”
“I wish I were.”
I handed her a copy of the trust.
“The account you never found is worth more than four million dollars.”
She stared at the document.
Then at me.
“You think money makes you powerful?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Your obsession with money is what made you powerless.”
She stepped closer.
“You don't understand this family.”
“I understand enough.”
“You destroyed Alexander.”
“No.”
I looked at my husband.
“You did that yourself.”
Alexander flinched.
Philippa turned toward him.
“You're going to let her speak to me like this?”
Alexander looked at his mother.
“I should have protected my daughter.”
Philippa's expression hardened.
“You ungrateful little boy.”
“I know.”
“And after everything I did for you?”
“You did it for control.”
She slapped him.
The airport security officers immediately intervened.
Philippa was escorted away.
Alexander stood there holding his cheek.
He looked at me.
“I deserved that.”
“No.”
May you like
I shook my head.
“Isla deserved none of this.”
