CHAPTER 1 — THE LOCKOUT

Marcus laughed as security escorted Isabella through the revolving doors.

The glass entrance closed behind her.

The applause from the charity gala continued inside as though nothing had happened.

Guests whispered.

Employees lowered their eyes.

No one dared challenge the CEO.

Marcus wrapped an arm around Vanessa, his mistress.

"Finally," she smiled. "She's gone."

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"She should have known her place."

Upstairs, Vanessa poured champagne inside the Presidential Suite.

She admired herself in Isabella's silk robe.

The sapphire brooch glittered beneath the chandelier.

"It suits me better," she laughed.

Marcus grinned.

"It all does."

Neither of them noticed the hotel's Executive Director quietly leaving the ballroom after receiving a single encrypted email.

Subject: Immediate Ownership Verification.

Within fifteen minutes, department heads were summoned.

The Chief Financial Officer looked pale.

"So...it's true?"

The company's General Counsel nodded.

"We've confirmed every document."

Silence filled the boardroom.

Marcus Holdings owned only twenty-nine percent.

The controlling shares...

belonged to Ashford Family Holdings.

The company Marcus believed he controlled had simply been licensed to operate under carefully negotiated agreements.

Every hotel.

Every resort.

Every piece of land...

had remained Isabella's family's property from the very beginning.

Outside the hotel, Isabella waited beside the black sedan that had just arrived.

Her father stepped out.

Richard Ashford.

The billionaire whose name almost never appeared in the media.

He embraced his daughter.

"I hoped he'd never force this day."

"So did I."

Richard looked toward the glittering hotel.

"But tonight...

he fired the wrong woman."

At exactly 9:00 p.m., emergency notices were sent to every executive across the empire.

Effective immediately: Emergency Board Meeting. Mandatory attendance.

Marcus received the notification while pouring another glass of champagne.

He laughed.

"What kind of idiot schedules a board meeting during my gala?"
