Chapter 10 - The Fall of Vance Biomedical

At nine the next morning, Maya ordered Vance Biomedical to file for court-supervised restructuring.
The announcement shocked investors.
Trading was suspended.
Banks froze corporate credit lines.
Overseas partners canceled contracts.
Every bonus, stock option, and executive retirement account connected to unresolved fraud became subject to federal review.
Nolan’s financial leverage began disappearing within minutes.
Richard’s family trust faced an emergency audit.
David learned about the decision from a television inside the detention center.
He called for Agent Cole.
“What is Maya doing?”
“Preventing assets from being moved.”
“She’s destroying the company.”
“The company distributed contaminated medical products.”
“Thousands of innocent employees will lose their jobs.”
“The restructuring plan preserves essential operations and payroll.”
David stared at the screen.
“She always hated the company.”
“No,” Cole said. “She trusted it enough to let Lily participate in a trial.”
David looked away.
Inside the headquarters, Maya addressed employees through a live broadcast.
She stood beside Dr. Brooks without corporate banners or staged applause.
“For years, leadership asked you to protect the company,” Maya said. “Some executives used that loyalty to hide decisions that harmed patients and employees. Effective today, protecting the truth is the only way to protect this organization.”
She announced a confidential reporting system operated by an outside law firm.
Within four hours, more than three hundred employees submitted information.
A laboratory technician reported being ordered to relabel contaminated samples.
A finance manager described payments to families whose children became ill.
A former driver said he transported Richard to meet Claire Donnelly on the night she died.
Then an employee from cybersecurity submitted a map of secret data centers used by Nolan.
One server was located beneath an abandoned pharmaceutical warehouse outside Milwaukee.
Federal agents obtained a warrant.
Maya insisted on accompanying Cole to the mobile command center, though she remained inside an armored vehicle during the search.
At 6:20 p.m., agents entered the warehouse.
No gunfire followed.
No suspects appeared.
But beneath the building, they found a climate-controlled room filled with servers.
Technicians began copying data.
Then an alarm sounded.
A timer appeared on every monitor.
TEN MINUTES TO THERMAL PURGE.
Nolan had installed a system designed to overheat the equipment and destroy the drives.
Agents cut external power.
Backup generators activated.
They disconnected the fuel supply.
Battery systems took over.
With less than four minutes remaining, a technician located the control unit inside a concrete wall.
The wires were protected by an explosive charge.
A bomb squad moved in.
Maya listened through Cole’s radio.
“Two minutes.”
“Control panel confirmed.”
“Possible pressure trigger.”
“Evacuate nonessential personnel.”
Cole opened the armored vehicle’s door.
“We need to move.”
“What about the servers?”
“The team is handling it.”
A black SUV approached the far gate at high speed.
Cole pushed Maya back inside the vehicle.
The SUV crashed through the chain barrier and accelerated toward the warehouse.
Agents shouted warnings.
The driver did not stop.
Gunfire struck the SUV’s tires.
It swerved, hit a concrete divider, and rolled.
Cole’s team surrounded it.
The driver was Samuel Keene.
He had somehow escaped Canadian transport while awaiting extradition.
Keene was pulled from the wreckage with a broken arm.
Inside the SUV, agents found weapons, fuel containers, and a remote detonator.
Maya watched through the vehicle window as Cole questioned him.
Keene laughed despite the blood on his face.
“You think the timer matters?” he said. “Nolan already has what he needs.”
Cole held up the detonator.
“Where is Richard?”
Keene spat blood onto the ground.
“Ask his son.”
“What does David know?”
“David has always known more than he admits.”
The timer inside the warehouse reached zero.
Nothing happened.
The bomb squad had disabled the purge with three seconds remaining.
Technicians recovered the data.
The files revealed years of crimes.
They also revealed Nolan’s current financial activity.
Minutes after Maya announced the restructuring, Nolan attempted to transfer two hundred million dollars from a Vance-controlled account in Luxembourg.
The transfer failed because of the asset freeze.
He then accessed a private aviation account.
A jet had been scheduled to leave a rural Wisconsin airport at midnight.
Destination: Argentina.
Federal agents surrounded the airport.
Maya returned to Chicago but refused to sleep.
At 11:48 p.m., a small convoy approached the runway.
Agents activated floodlights.
The first vehicle stopped.
The second accelerated toward the waiting aircraft.
Tactical vehicles blocked its path.
A man exited and fired several shots.
Agents returned fire.
The man fell.
It was not Nolan.
It was Richard Vance.
He wore body armor and carried two passports.
A medic treated a wound in his shoulder.
Inside Richard’s vehicle, agents found the yacht’s data server.
Nolan was nowhere near the airport.
The escape attempt had been a diversion.
While agents surrounded the runway, Nolan entered the secured apartment building where Maya had been staying.
He wore a federal maintenance uniform and carried forged identification.
The agents at the lobby desk had been redirected after receiving a false emergency call from the building’s upper floor.
Nolan reached Maya’s apartment at 12:07 a.m.
He used an electronic device to unlock the door.
Maya was sitting at the kitchen table when he entered.
She had one hand beneath the table.
Nolan pointed a gun at her.
“Move your hand where I can see it.”
Maya slowly placed both hands on the table.
“You lost the money.”
Nolan smiled.
“You think this was only about money?”
“What else would a man like you care about?”
“Survival.”
He locked the door behind him.
“You gave the FBI access to servers containing my entire life.”
“You built your life on sick children.”
“I built a company while David played executive and Richard played king.”
“You also built the system that killed Lily.”
Nolan’s expression did not change.
“Richard placed her into the trial.”
“You hid the contamination.”
“David signed the delay.”
“And you all expected the child to carry the consequences.”
Nolan placed a flash drive on the table.
“This contains Claire’s recording and Richard’s orders.”
“Then give it to the FBI.”
“I need your authorization to release fifty million dollars from a patient-compensation reserve.”
“That money belongs to victims.”
“It belongs to whoever controls it.”
Maya looked toward the hallway.
“No one is coming.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you afraid?”
Nolan’s gun shifted slightly.
Maya noticed.
She pressed a hidden switch beneath the table.
The apartment lights went out.
Nolan fired.
The bullet struck the wall.
Maya dropped to the floor and crawled toward the hallway.
Nolan overturned the table.
Emergency lights flashed red.
He grabbed Maya’s ankle.
She kicked backward and struck his face.
The gun slid across the floor.
Nolan pulled her toward him.
“You should have stayed a grieving widow.”
“I’m not a widow.”
“You will be.”
A shape moved behind him.
Dr. Patel swung a fire extinguisher into Nolan’s shoulder.
He collapsed sideways.
Maya grabbed the gun and aimed it at him.
Nolan stared up from the floor.
“You won’t shoot me.”
Maya’s finger rested against the trigger.
For one terrible second, she imagined doing it.
Then Agent Cole’s voice came through the open doorway.
“Federal agents! Drop the weapon!”
Maya placed the gun on the floor.
Agents handcuffed Nolan.
Dr. Patel helped Maya stand.
“You were supposed to be at the hospital,” Maya whispered.
“I came to make sure you ate.”
Nolan laughed as agents pulled him upright.
“You still don’t understand,” he said. “The flash drive is encrypted. Without me, Claire’s recording disappears forever.”
Maya picked up the drive.
“You broke into my home because you thought you were the only person who understood numbers.”
She looked at Agent Cole.
“But the person who designed Nolan’s offshore accounting system contacted the whistleblower line this afternoon.”
Nolan’s smile vanished.
Maya continued.
May you like
“She gave us every encryption key.”
For the first time, Nolan Price looked afraid.
