Chapter 10 - THE TRAP INSIDE THE TRAPThe allegations reached Vale Urban on a Tuesday morning.

A financial newspaper reported that Adrian had hired Claire to gain access to confidential Bennett Development plans before the East Harbor competition.
The article cited internal emails, security records, and an unnamed former executive.
Within hours, Vale Urban’s board requested an independent review.
Claire read the story in her office.
The allegations were false, but the documents looked convincing.
One email appeared to show Adrian instructing Naomi to “secure Bennett materials through C.B.”
Another showed Claire entering Vale headquarters two weeks before the public redevelopment hearing.
Claire had still been living in Boston on that date.
“They altered the records,” she said.
Evelyn enlarged the document.
“Or created them.”
Adrian stood near the conference table with his general counsel.
“We can prove Claire was in Boston,” he said.
“That addresses one record,” the attorney replied. “The larger allegation is that she used documents removed from Bennett Development.”
“My own drawings,” Claire said.
“And materials you created during the marriage may be claimed as company property.”
Claire felt the twins move for the first time.
The sensation was light, almost like bubbles beneath her skin.
She placed one hand over her stomach.
Adrian noticed.
He crossed the room.
“Are you all right?”
“They moved.”
For a second, the investigation disappeared.
He knelt beside her chair.
“Both?”
“I don’t know.”
She guided his hand to the spot.
Nothing happened.
Then a tiny flutter pressed against his palm.
Adrian’s face changed with wonder.
Claire wanted to remain inside that moment.
Instead, his attorney’s phone rang.
He answered, listened, and became pale.
“What is it?” Adrian asked.
“The board has received a copy of a consulting agreement allegedly signed by Claire eight months before her official employment.”
“I never signed one,” Claire said.
“It includes her signature and yours.”
Adrian stood.
“Then both are forged.”
The attorney lowered the phone.
“There is another issue. The payment records show two hundred fifty thousand dollars transferred to an account in Claire’s name.”
Claire stared at him.
“What account?”
The account belonged to a private bank in Delaware.
Evelyn contacted the bank and discovered it had been opened using copies of Claire’s passport and old marital address.
Someone had created a financial trail connecting her to corporate theft.
Mason knew enough personal information to do it.
But Claire suspected Warren had designed the operation.
Adrian’s board placed him on temporary leave pending review.
He accepted the decision rather than use his voting control to block it.
“If I force the board to ignore evidence because I own the largest share, I prove their argument that no one can hold me accountable,” he told Claire.
“What happens to the company?”
“Naomi and the chief operating officer will manage it.”
“And my division?”
“Yours remains under you.”
“I’m named in the investigation.”
“You have not been suspended.”
“Yet.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Do not resign.”
“I don’t want to damage the company.”
“That is exactly why they targeted you. They expect shame to make you remove yourself.”
Claire recognized the strategy.
Mason had used it throughout their marriage.
He created pain, then depended on her desire for peace to erase the evidence.
“I won’t resign,” she said.
That evening, Vanessa called.
“I know who helped Mason.”
Claire’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Warren Pike?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“Mason called him from our house after Oliver was born. I heard them arguing about Vale Urban.”
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
“It matters now.”
Vanessa took a breath.
“There’s more. Luke kept copies of Mason’s private messages.”
“Where is Luke?”
“Montreal.”
Claire looked at Evelyn, who was listening on speakerphone.
“Can you contact him?”
“He won’t speak to me.”
“Why?”
“Because I told Mason the baby was his.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Of course.
“Does Luke know Oliver is his son?”
“Yes.”
“And he left?”
“He believes staying away protects Oliver from the investigation.”
“That sounds convenient.”
“He’s afraid Mason will claim Luke stole company money.”
“Did he?”
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn wrote something on a legal pad.
“Ask her whether Mason ever discussed the Delaware account,” she said.
Claire repeated the question.
Vanessa became quiet.
“I saw an envelope from the bank.”
“When?”
“Before the Fairmont dinner.”
Claire’s blood ran cold.
Before the divorce.
Mason had begun creating the false financial trail while still married to her.
“Did you see the account holder’s name?”
“No, but Mason said it was insurance.”
“Insurance against what?”
“Against Claire changing her mind.”
The room became silent.
Claire understood.
Mason had not simply planned to leave her.
He had prepared a way to destroy her if she fought the settlement.
The forged account had likely remained unused until Warren repurposed it for the Vale Urban scheme.
“Would you testify to that?” Evelyn asked.
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“Mason will ruin me.”
“He is already trying,” Claire said.
“He still has photographs and messages.”
“Of what?”
Vanessa did not answer.
Claire’s patience ended.
“You came to me because you wanted protection. Protection requires the truth.”
“I helped him.”
“With the account?”
“I copied Claire’s passport.”
Claire felt the room tilt.
Vanessa continued rapidly.
“Mason said he needed identification for the divorce attorney. I took it from the desk while Claire was sleeping.”
Claire stood so quickly that the chair rolled backward.
“You stole my passport?”
“I returned it.”
“You helped him create an account in my name.”
“I didn’t know that was what he was doing.”
“You never asked.”
“No.”
“You didn’t want to know.”
Vanessa began crying.
Claire walked toward the windows.
Below, the city lights blurred.
The betrayal had begun long before the dinner.
Vanessa had not simply slept with Mason.
She had helped prepare Claire’s financial destruction.
Evelyn spoke calmly.
“Vanessa, you may have criminal exposure. You need independent counsel.”
“I can’t afford one.”
“I’ll provide a referral, but Claire will not pay your legal fees.”
Claire turned.
For a moment, she considered refusing all help.
Then she remembered Oliver.
“Tell the truth,” Claire said. “That is the only help I will offer.”
Vanessa agreed to meet investigators.
Evelyn also contacted Luke through his attorney.
Two days later, he returned to the United States carrying an encrypted drive.
The drive contained years of Mason’s messages.
One thread with Warren discussed Claire directly.
The wife’s signature is clean. Keep the account inactive unless she challenges the settlement.
Another message, sent after Claire joined Vale Urban, read:
We already built the weapon. Now we choose where to point it.
The evidence cleared Adrian and Claire.
It also expanded the federal investigation.
Agents arrested Warren at O’Hare Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Switzerland.
Mason was arrested the following morning.
News helicopters filmed agents removing boxes from Bennett Development headquarters.
Claire watched from her apartment.
She expected relief.
Instead, she felt the twins moving.
She placed both hands over them.
Adrian stood behind her.
“It’s over,” he said.
“No.”
Claire watched Mason emerge from the building in handcuffs.
Reporters shouted his name.
His face turned toward the cameras, furious and disbelieving.
“It’s beginning,” she said.

Because Mason had spent his life controlling the story.
Now the truth would be told by everyone he had tried to use.
