Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH ABOUT LUKE

Daniel returned that evening carrying a thick box.

He placed it on the bed.

“Police finished the preliminary search.”

I looked at him.

“What did they find?”

He opened the box.

Inside were folders.

Photographs.

Bank statements.

Contracts.

And dozens of handwritten notes.

Daniel pulled out the first folder.

“Clover, I need you to prepare yourself.”

I nodded.

He showed me a photograph.

Luke.

Standing beside Lauren.

Another photograph.

Luke with a different woman.

Then another.

Three women.

Four.

Five.

My stomach twisted.

“How many?”

“We've identified six.”

“Six?”

“Potential victims.”

My mother covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“Some lost money. Some disappeared from his life completely. One filed a domestic violence complaint.”

“What happened?”

“She withdrew it.”

“Why?”

“Fear.”

Daniel placed another document before me.

“There's a second pattern.”

“What?”

“All of them had significant assets.”

I felt cold.

“So he chose women for their money.”

“Yes.”

“Then why marry me?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because you had more than you realized.”

I stared at him.

“The trust.”

He nodded.

“Your grandfather's trust was valued at approximately three million dollars when established.”

My breath stopped.

“Three million?”

“Adjusted value is significantly higher.”

My mother whispered my name.

I couldn't think.

Luke hadn't married me because he loved me.

He had researched me.

Studied me.

Chosen me.

Daniel continued.

“Your grandmother apparently suspected that someone would try to exploit the trust.”

“That's why she gave Barron the key.”

“Yes.”

I stared at the files.

“Why didn't the trust appear in my name?”

“It did.”

“What?”

“You were listed as beneficiary.”

“Then why couldn't I access it?”

“Because your grandfather established conditions.”

“What conditions?”

“You couldn't access the principal without an independent trustee.”

I frowned.

“Who was the trustee?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Your grandmother.”

“She died.”

“Yes.”

“Then who replaced her?”

Daniel placed a document on the bed.

I read the name.

My heart stopped.

“Barron.”

I looked up.

“My father-in-law?”

“Yes.”

That explained everything.

Barron hadn't been keeping a secret because he wanted my money.

He had been protecting it.

And perhaps protecting me.

But Luke had known about the trust.

I looked at Daniel.

“How?”

“Because he found correspondence between your grandparents and Barron.”

My chest tightened.

“So he knew before we married.”

“Yes.”

I stared at the ceiling.

Seven years.

Seven years of believing my husband loved me.

Seven years of thinking our arguments were normal.

Seven years of thinking his jealousy was affection.

His control was concern.

His anger was stress.

I had been translating cruelty into love because I didn't want to admit what it was.

Daniel closed the folder.

“There's one more thing.”

“What?”

“We found a draft divorce agreement.”

I laughed bitterly.

“He was planning to divorce me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After transferring the trust assets.”

My blood froze.

“How?”

“He intended to pressure you into signing financial authorization documents.”

“And then?”

“He would petition for control of the trust.”

I closed my eyes.

The broken leg wasn't the endgame.

It was the beginning.

He needed me dependent.

He needed me frightened.

He needed me unable to work.

Then he would take the money.

I opened my eyes.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“Can he still get it?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

“Why?”

“Because you have legal representation now.”

He smiled faintly.

“And because your grandfather's trust has a provision Luke never knew about.”

“What provision?”

“If your spouse attempts to obtain control through coercion, fraud, or violence, he is permanently excluded.”

I stared at him.

Luke had spent seven years building a trap.

And in the end, he had triggered the one clause that could destroy his entire plan.

Then my phone rang.

My mother's face changed.

“Who is it?”

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Daniel shook his head.

“Don't answer.”

But the call stopped.

Seconds later, a message appeared.

I opened it.

It contained one sentence.

YOU THINK THE POLICE CAN PROTECT YOU?

Then another message appeared.

THEY CAN'T PROTECT EVERYONE YOU LOVE.

My blood ran cold.

Daniel took the phone from my hand.

“Clover, from this moment on, you don't respond to anything.”

I nodded.

But my mother was already crying.

Because she understood what I did.

Luke had just changed the rules.

May you like

He wasn't threatening me anymore.

He was threatening my family.
