Chapter 10 - THE COURTROOM

The courtroom was packed.
Reporters filled the back rows.
Luke sat beside his attorney.
He looked calm.
Clean.
Professional.
Like the man who had broken my leg didn't exist.
When I entered in my wheelchair, the room went silent.
Luke looked at me.
For one second, our eyes met.
He smiled.
Not kindly.
Confidently.
Like he still believed he owned me.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
The hearing began.
Luke's attorney claimed I was emotionally unstable.
He claimed I had fabricated the allegations.
He claimed I had a history of irrational behavior.
Then he said:
“Your Honor, my client is deeply concerned for his wife's well-being.”
I almost laughed.
Daniel stood.
“My client's husband is the reason she is in a wheelchair.”
The judge looked at him.
“Do you have evidence?”
Daniel nodded.
“Substantial evidence.”
He submitted the recording.
Then the bank statements.
The forged medical authorization.
The photographs.
The surveillance records.
The shell companies.
The files from the hidden room.
The courtroom grew silent.
Luke's face changed.
Daniel continued.
“We also have recordings demonstrating that this assault was planned.”
The judge looked at Luke.
“Mr. Hayes, is this your voice?”
Luke said nothing.
His attorney leaned toward him.
Luke finally answered.
“I don't remember.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then perhaps you'll remember this.”
He played the recording.
Luke's voice filled the courtroom.
Once she's injured, she'll have to quit her job.
Celina's voice followed.
Without her own money, she won't be able to leave.
Then Luke:
Exactly.
The courtroom erupted.
The judge ordered silence.
Luke's attorney objected.
Daniel presented another recording.
The conversation about the forged documents.
Then the video from the hidden room.
Luke watched himself on screen.
His confidence disappeared.
Finally, Daniel placed the final evidence on the table.
A forensic report.
Lauren Carter's remains.
DNA confirmation.
The courtroom went completely silent.
Emily Carter began crying.
Luke looked at her.
Then at me.
For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
The judge ordered an immediate recess.
But before anyone could leave, police officers entered the courtroom.
“Luke Hayes?”
Luke stood.
“Yes?”
“You are under arrest.”
His attorney protested.
Luke looked at me.
“This isn't over.”
I stared back.
“Yes.”
“It is.”
He was handcuffed.
As the officers led him away, Celina was brought into the courtroom from another entrance.
She saw Luke.
He saw her.
Neither spoke.
But Celina's face revealed everything.
She knew.
The empire they had built together was collapsing.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded me.
Questions came from every direction.
“Did your husband abuse you?”
“Did you know about the other women?”
“Will you testify?”
I ignored them.
Then one reporter shouted:
“Clover, are you afraid he'll come after you?”
I stopped.
I looked directly into the cameras.
“No.”
My voice was quiet.
“But I was afraid once.”
I paused.
“That's why he thought he could win.”
Then I turned toward my mother.
For the first time in seven years, I felt free.
But the story wasn't over.
Because that evening, Daniel received a package.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting belonged to Luke.
Only four words appeared on the page.
YOU KNOW NOTHING YET.
Daniel read it twice.
Then he looked at me.
And I knew immediately.
There was another secret.
One Luke had kept hidden even from his mother.
May you like
And whatever it was...
It had something to do with my grandfather.
