Part 2: The Child Who Was Never Supposed to Exist
Ryan's hand shook as he pointed the gun toward the shore.
"Mom, step away from her!" he shouted.
Margaret's heart pounded so hard she thought she might collapse. The little girl clung to her coat, trembling violently.
"No," Margaret said. "Not until you tell me who this child is."
The girl buried her face against Margaret's chest.
Ryan looked at Chloe.
Chloe looked broken.
And for the first time since Margaret had known her, she seemed more terrified of Ryan than of anything else.
"Put the gun down," Chloe whispered.
Ryan ignored her.
"Mom, you don't understand."
"Then explain it!" Margaret screamed.
Rain began falling harder across the lake.
The little girl suddenly lifted her head.
"My name is Lily."
Ryan closed his eyes.
The color drained from his face.
Margaret stared at him.
"You know her."
Silence.
Then Chloe spoke.
"She's his daughter."
Everything stopped.
Margaret felt the ground disappear beneath her.
"What?"
Ryan lowered the gun slightly.
"Mom..."
"She's your daughter?"
Lily nodded.
Margaret looked from the child to her son.
The dark eyes.
The shape of the chin.
The resemblance was impossible to miss now.
For seven years Ryan had hidden a child from everyone.
Seven years.
"Why?" Margaret whispered.
Ryan's voice cracked.
"Because if people found out, everything would fall apart."
Three years before meeting Chloe, Ryan had briefly dated a woman named Emily.
When Emily became pregnant, Ryan panicked.
He was building his company and preparing for a major investment deal.
A child would complicate everything.
He paid Emily to stay quiet.
Months later, Emily disappeared.
Ryan convinced himself she wanted nothing to do with him.
But two weeks earlier, Lily had shown up at his office carrying a letter.
Emily had died from cancer.
Before her death, she had finally told Lily who her father was.
The letter named Ryan.
Lily had come looking for him.
Margaret looked sick.
"You abandoned your own daughter."
Ryan stared at the ground.
But Chloe shook her head.
"That's not the whole story."
Everyone looked at her.
Chloe wiped her tears.
"When Lily arrived, I wanted Ryan to tell you the truth."
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"He refused."
Because Ryan was about to finalize a multi-million-dollar merger.
The company lawyers warned that a public scandal involving a hidden child could destroy the deal.
For days they argued.
Then Ryan made a horrifying decision.
He told Chloe he would send Lily away to a private facility overseas until everything was settled.
When Chloe learned what that really meant, she panicked.
"He wasn't sending her away temporarily," Chloe said.
"He was making her disappear."
Ryan looked away.
Margaret felt physically ill.
"You put her in that suitcase?"
"No!" Chloe cried.
"I was trying to save her."
Everyone froze.
Chloe explained that she had planned to meet a journalist who was investigating Ryan's company.
The suitcase was never meant to sink.
She had lined it with air pockets and secretly left openings near the zipper.
She intended to carry Lily across the lake to a hidden dock where the journalist was waiting.
But Ryan discovered her plan and followed her.
Everything had gone wrong.
Ryan's face hardened.
"You're lying."
But before anyone could answer, police sirens echoed through the trees.
