Chapter 9 - The Settlement Offer

Arthur’s first settlement offer arrived three days after the cedar trunk was removed from the house.

It came through a lawyer Audrey had never heard of, written in the kind of polished language wealthy men used when they wanted crimes to sound like misunderstandings.

In the interest of family reconciliation, Mr. and Mrs. Vance are prepared to offer Ms. Vance a private financial resolution.

Marianne read the letter aloud at Rosie’s Diner.

Audrey sat across from her, hands wrapped around a coffee mug.

“How much?” Rosie asked.

Marianne’s mouth curved without humor.

“Fifty thousand dollars.”

Paige nearly choked.

“They stole a college fund, forged loans, took a house, trashed her name, and offered fifty thousand?”

“Plus,” Marianne continued, “a request that Audrey publicly clarify that the matter was based on emotional miscommunication.”

Rosie slapped the table.

“Absolutely not.”

Audrey said nothing.

Fifty thousand dollars was more money than she had ever had at once.

It was rent.

Food.

Loan relief.

A car that did not stall at red lights.

A year of breathing.

For one exhausted second, temptation whispered.

Take it.

Disappear.

Stop fighting.

Then she remembered her father crossing the graduation courtyard.

Her mother calling her a loser in front of strangers.

Julian texting threats.

Evelyn’s voice saying, “Forgive him only if forgiveness does not require you to become smaller.”

Audrey looked at Marianne.

“No.”

The attorney nodded once, as if she had expected that.

“Good.”

Rosie smiled proudly.

Paige squeezed Audrey’s hand.

That afternoon, Arthur tried a different approach.

He went on local television.

Wearing a navy suit and wounded expression, he stood outside the family home beside Victoria. She wore no makeup, or rather makeup designed to look like no makeup. Julian was absent.

Arthur looked into the camera and sighed.

“Our daughter has been under tremendous stress for many years,” he said. “We love Audrey. We are heartbroken that she chose to turn private family pain into a public spectacle.”

Audrey watched the clip from Marianne’s office.

Her stomach twisted, but she did not look away.

Victoria dabbed her eyes.

“We only ever wanted to help her,” she whispered to the reporter. “Sometimes love is misunderstood by children who are hurting.”

Paige yelled at the screen.

Rosie muttered something unprintable.

Marianne paused the video.

“Remember what I said? Unstable. Consent. Settlement. They’re following the pattern.”

Audrey nodded.

But that night, the pattern broke.

At 11:43 p.m., an anonymous account uploaded an audio file.

At first, nobody knew who had recorded it.

Then Paige recognized Julian’s voice.

The audio was from the night before graduation.

Arthur spoke first.

“If she actually walks that stage, people will ask questions.”

Victoria responded, cold and sharp.

“Then we make her look ridiculous before she can talk.”

Julian laughed nervously.

“What, like a scene?”

Arthur said, “A controlled one. She cries, we say she’s unstable, everyone remembers that instead of the diploma.”

Victoria added, “She has always been too proud. Break that pride in public, and no one will believe whatever story she tries to sell.”

Audrey sat in her bed at Rosie’s apartment and listened to her family plan her humiliation like a weather report.

Her hands shook.

Not from surprise.

From recognition.

This was what they did.

They did not lose control.

They created moments where Audrey looked like the one who had.

By morning, the audio had gone viral too.

Arthur’s television interview collapsed under the weight of his own recorded words.

Reporters camped outside the Vance house.

Commentators called it calculated emotional abuse.

Former neighbors began telling stories.

Old classmates remembered seeing Audrey work dawn shifts.

A university professor posted that Audrey had completed her honors thesis while “carrying burdens no student should carry.”

Then Samuel Reed gave a statement through Marianne.

He confirmed Evelyn’s trust.

He confirmed the lake house transfer was under review.

He confirmed the video statement existed.

By noon, Arthur’s lawyer withdrew the settlement offer.

By evening, a new message came from Julian.

I didn’t upload it.

Audrey stared at the text.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

But I know who did.
