Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Ferguson

"You can't touch him!" Patricia screamed, throwing her body in front of Nicholas as the military police officers stepped forward, their heavy duty belts clinking. "Do you know who we are?! My husband is the chief donor to the governor's campaign! We own Ferguson Development!"

"You used to own it, Patricia," I said, pulling a second document from my folder.

"During the forty-five minutes it took me to drive here from Fort Liberty, my staff logistics officer conducted a brief review of Ferguson Development’s commercial logistics contracts. It turns out, seventy percent of your family’s revenue comes from federal defense logistics contracts at Fort Liberty and Camp Lejeune."

Patricia’s breath caught in her throat. Her hand slowly drifted to her chest, her fingers clutching her diamond necklace.

"As a presiding Colonel on the joint logistical procurement board," I said, looking her dead in the eye, "I have temporarily suspended all federal payouts and active contracts with Ferguson Development pending an immediate, thorough investigation into your family's ethical and criminal compliance."

"You... you destroyed our company in an hour?" Gregory whispered, his arrogance completely evaporating into a desperate, suffocating panic.

"I didn't destroy it, Gregory. Your brother did when he decided to use my daughter as a punching bag," I replied. "I simply cut off the supply lines. That's basic warfare."

The military police officers bypassed Patricia, grabbing Nicholas by his arms and forcing his hands behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of the steel handcuffs locking around his wrists was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.
