Chapter 10 - THE BROTHER WHO NEVER DIED

Nobody moved.
Adrian stared at the stranger as if he were seeing a ghost.
The old man smiled.
"My sons."
I looked at Rose.
She was crying.
"Who is he?"
She whispered:
"Daniel."
Adrian's supposed dead brother.
But the name hit me differently.
Daniel.
The same name my father had used.
The same name that had followed my family for decades.
The young man looked at me.
"You look like her."
"Like who?"
"Rose."
He smiled.
"My mother."
I stepped backward.
"You're my uncle?"
He nodded.
"Half brother to Adrian."
"Why did you hide?"
"My father hid me."
The old man interrupted.
"Because Adrian was the heir."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"And I was the insurance policy."
I looked at Adrian.
He was speechless.
"You knew?"
He shook his head.
"No."
Daniel laughed.
"Of course he didn't."
He stepped closer.
"That's the beauty of this family."
He looked at me.
"Everyone thinks they're innocent because nobody tells them the truth."
I felt anger rising.
"You kidnapped my mother."
"No."
"You helped Daniel Bennett."
"I helped myself."
"What do you want?"
"The trust."
"The evidence?"
"Not evidence."
He looked at Lucia.
"Control."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"The trust contains controlling shares in every major Vale asset."
Adrian stepped forward.
"You want the company."
"I want what was stolen from me."
"You've been hiding for thirty years."
"Because your grandfather would've killed me."
The old man scoffed.
"You were weak."
Daniel turned toward him.
"No."
His voice became cold.
"I was patient."
Then he looked at me.
"Your mother hid the trust because she knew one person could unlock it."
"Who?"
He pointed at Lucia.
"The bloodline."
Adrian frowned.
"She's six."
"Exactly."
I held Lucia tighter.
"She's not a key."
Daniel smiled.
"Every person is a key to someone."
He took out a photograph.
It showed my mother holding me as a baby.
On the back was a handwritten sequence of numbers.
"That's the access code."
I stared.
"I've seen those numbers."
"Where?"
"In my mother's dance notebook."
Daniel nodded.
"The choreography."
Suddenly everything made sense.
The dance wasn't just a dance.
It was a message.
A code.
A map.
The falling star.
The turns.
The pauses.
The final position.
My mother had spent years teaching me something I never understood.
Rose looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
I shook my head.
"No."
She reached for me.
"I needed you to remember."
"Remember what?"
"The last movement."
I thought about Lucia dancing.
One step.
Two turns.
The fall.
The hand toward the ceiling.
The final point.
Then I understood.
The last position wasn't random.
It pointed toward the chandelier.
And the chandelier contained a star-shaped ornament.
I looked at Adrian.
"Your grandmother's ballroom."
He nodded.
"The original ballroom."
"There's something hidden there."
Daniel smiled.
"Now you understand."
Suddenly the old man raised his gun.
"Enough."
Daniel turned.
"What are you doing?"
"I don't need either of you anymore."
The gun fired.
Daniel fell.
Adrian screamed.
Lucia buried her face against me.
I watched blood spread across Daniel's shirt.
The old man turned toward Rose.
"You should have died thirty years ago."
Rose stood.
"Maybe."
She looked at me.
"But I didn't."
Then she pulled a small device from her pocket.
She pressed a button.
Every light in the mansion came on.
Police sirens erupted outside.
The old man froze.
May you like
Rose smiled through her tears.
"I've been recording you for thirty years."
