Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN IN THE BASEMENT

We found Rose the next morning.
Not because Daniel made a mistake.
Because Celeste knew where to look.
An abandoned estate outside Concord.
The basement door was locked from the outside.
Adrian broke it down.
"Rose!"
No answer.
Then we heard a faint cough.
Behind a concrete wall.
We found a hidden passage.
And there she was.
My mother.
Alive.
Older.
Thinner.
Her hair almost completely gray.
But her eyes were the same.
I stood frozen.
She looked at me.
Then at Lucia.
Tears filled her eyes.
"My baby."
I couldn't move.
Thirty years of questions.
Three years of grief.
A lifetime of believing she had abandoned me.
And now she was standing five feet away.
I wanted to hug her.
I wanted to scream.
Instead I whispered:
"Why?"
She lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
"Why did you leave me?"
"Because Daniel threatened to kill you."
"You could have come back."
"I tried."
"When?"
"Many times."
"Then why didn't I know?"
"Because every time I got close, he moved you."
I cried.
"I thought you didn't love me."
Rose covered her mouth.
"I loved you enough to disappear."
That sentence broke something inside me.
I crossed the room.
She reached for me.
I fell into her arms.
For the first time since I was a child, I smelled her perfume.
Lavender.
The same perfume I remembered from my childhood.
She whispered:
"I'm sorry."
I held her tighter.
"You should have told me."
"I know."
"What happened to you?"
She looked at Eleanor.
Then Adrian.
Then Celeste.
"Your father wasn't acting alone."
My body went rigid.
"Who else?"
Rose's eyes filled with fear.
"The Vale family."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Who?"
"Your grandfather."
"He died twenty years ago."
"He didn't."
Silence.
"What?"
Rose shook her head.
"The funeral was staged."
Eleanor collapsed into a chair.
"No."
Rose looked at her.
"He escaped."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Adrian's face hardened.
"Then why keep saying he was involved?"
"Because he controlled Daniel."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel was his son."
"His second son."
Rose nodded.
"Daniel Vale."
Adrian's eyes widened.
"Then who was Daniel Bennett?"
Rose looked at me.
"A man your grandfather paid to impersonate his son."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
"Your father was never Daniel Bennett."
I couldn't breathe.
"He stole the Bennett identity."
Rose nodded.
"He needed a clean name."
"Why?"
"To hide the money."
I looked at Celeste.
She looked away.
Rose continued.
"The Vale fortune was built on stolen money."
Adrian shook his head.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Rose's voice became firm.
"Your family fortune was built over a crime."
She pointed toward Lucia.
"And she carries the key to proving it."
I looked at my daughter.
"What key?"
Rose reached into her pocket.
She removed a tiny silver music box.
She opened it.
The same melody played.
Our song.
But this time there was something different.
After the final notes, a hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a microfilm.
Adrian stared.
"That's the evidence."
Rose nodded.
"The original financial records."
Then headlights appeared outside.
Everyone froze.
A car stopped.
Doors slammed.
Rose whispered:
"They found us."
Adrian grabbed Lucia.
Celeste locked the basement door.
I stood beside my mother.
Then a voice came through the house.
Calm.
Old.
Powerful.
A voice I had never heard before.
But Adrian recognized it.
He went pale.
"Grandfather."
The voice laughed.
May you like
"Hello, Adrian."
And then the basement lights went out.
