Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

One year later.

The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow over the backyard of our new home in the rolling hills of East Tennessee. The air was sweet with the scent of pine and fresh-cut grass.

A large banner hung between two maple trees, reading: HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY, LUKE!

Our backyard was filled with laughter. Aunts, uncles, and cousins—the ones who had stood on that patio in Nashville and witnessed Madeline’s cruelty—were all here. When the truth about Madeline’s deception and her attempt to endanger Luke’s life had come to light, the entire family had cut her off. She was left entirely alone in her massive, silent house, facing legal inquiries into her handling of the family estate.

"Make a wish, sweet boy!" I cheered, carrying out a giant, nut-free chocolate cake topped with five brightly burning candles.

Luke, healthy, happy, and sporting a head of thick, curly hair that looked exactly like his father's, grinned from ear to ear. He took a deep breath and blew out the candles as everyone clapped and cheered.

Brandon stood beside me, wrapping his arm tightly around my waist. He looked down at Luke with a pride so fierce it brought a lump to my throat.

"He's got your smile, you know," Brandon whispered, kissing my temple.

"And he's got your brave heart," I replied, leaning into him.

We had legally changed our last name to my maiden name. We had built a new life, free of secrets, free of toxic pride, and filled with nothing but love.

As Luke ran off to play tag with his cousins, his laughter echoing across the green grass, I knew that the shattered plate of blackberry cobbler hadn't been the end of our family. It had been the cracking of the shell that held us in the dark.

We were finally in the light. And my son would never have to ask if he was loved ever again.
