Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Medical File

Three hours later, the pediatric specialist, Dr. Sarah Jenkins, entered the private recovery room. She held a thick blue folder, her expression incredibly grave.
"Is he going to be okay?" I asked, rising from my chair.
"Luke is out of danger," Dr. Jenkins assured us, her voice gentle. "The epinephrine worked beautifully. We confirmed a severe, life-threatening allergy to tree nuts—specifically walnuts. But while we were processing his blood work and running the genetic risk panel, we ran into an anomaly."
Brandon stood up, crossing his arms. "An anomaly? What do you mean?"
Dr. Jenkins looked between Brandon and me, pausing as if choosing her words with extreme care. "To map the genetic marker of this specific allergy, we compared Luke’s DNA structure against the standard parental profile we have on file for you, Brandon, from your previous outpatient surgeries at this network."
She opened the folder and turned a page toward us.
"According to the genetic markers, Luke shares a 99.9% paternal DNA match with the Harlan family line. He is, without a doubt, a blood descendant of your father, Richard Harlan."
"Of course he is," I said, feeling a sense of relief. "I've never been with anyone else. I love my husband."
"But," Dr. Jenkins continued, her voice dropping to a quiet, serious tone, "he does not share a direct paternal match with you, Brandon."
The room went completely silent. The only sound was the steady, rhythmic beep of Luke’s heart monitor.
"What?" Brandon laughed, a hollow, dry sound. "That’s impossible. If he’s a descendant of my father, but he’s not my son... what are you saying? That my wife slept with my dead father? He died thirty years ago!"
"No, Mr. Harlan," Dr. Jenkins said softly. "The DNA profile indicates a sibling-level variance. Luke’s paternal DNA matches someone who is a direct, full brother to you. Do you have a brother?"
May you like
"No," Brandon said, his chest heaving. "I'm an only child. My mother raised me alone after my father died."
"Then there is a massive discrepancy in your family medical history," the doctor said. "Because biologically, the man who fathered Luke is a genetic twin or an identical sibling to you. Or... you are not who you think you are."
