Part 5: The Guest Who Was Never Invited

Part 5: The Guest Who Was Never Invited
The day after my father finally admitted the truth, I couldn't sleep.
Not because of the pain from surgery.
Not because of the medication.
Because my mind wouldn't stop replaying every conversation I had ever had with my family.
Every time my mother said, "Family helps family."
Every time my father told me, "You have always been the strong one."
Every time Liora cried about how difficult things were and somehow I ended up being the one who fixed them.
I used to think those moments proved they trusted me.
Now I understood.
They knew I would sacrifice myself.
That was why they chose me.
I lay in the hospital bed staring at the ceiling until sunrise.
Then my phone rang.
Adrian.
I answered immediately.
"Tell me you found something."
His voice was serious.
"I did."
I sat up carefully, ignoring the pain.
"What?"
"The condo sale wasn't the only thing."
My heart tightened.
"What else?"
"There were attempts to access your other assets."
I went still.
"My other assets?"
"Yes."
I heard papers moving on his end.
"Your parents didn't just need money for a wedding, Maren."
"What were they trying to do?"
"They were trying to create a financial trail."
I frowned.
"Explain."
"They wanted it to look like you voluntarily supported the wedding."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"So if anyone questioned the money..."
"They could say you gave it willingly."
I looked at my hands.
They didn't just steal from me.
They were building a story.
A story where I was the generous sister.
The supportive daughter.
The person who agreed to everything.
"And the condo?"
Adrian paused.
"The condo was the first step."

I closed my eyes.
"Why?"
"Because property is easier to explain."
"What do you mean?"
"Money transfers can raise questions. But a family member selling property to help with a wedding can be disguised as generosity."
I felt sick.
"They planned this carefully."
"Yes."
A silence followed.
Then Adrian said something unexpected.
"Maren, there is something else you need to know."
"What?"
"Your sister knew."
My chest tightened.
"Liora?"
"Yes."
"No."
The word came out immediately.
I wanted to reject it.
Because as angry as I was, part of me still wanted to believe Liora was different.
She was my little sister.
The child I protected.
The girl I helped.
The girl whose school fees I paid when my parents were struggling.
"Adrian..."
"I know you don't want to hear this."
"Then prove it."
A pause.
"I already did."
He sent me a file.
I opened it.
Inside were screenshots.
Messages.
Emails.
The first one was between Liora and Daniel Cross.
My hands started shaking.
Daniel:
"Your sister won't agree if she knows the truth."
Liora:
"She won't find out."
Daniel:
"And if she does?"
Liora:
"She always forgives me."
I stopped reading.
The words hurt more than I expected.
Not because Liora betrayed me.
Because she knew exactly what she was doing.
She knew I would forgive her.
She counted on it.
I scrolled further.
Another message.
Liora:
"Mom said Maren is emotional after surgery. We need to finish before she gets home."
I stared at the screen.
Before she gets home.
Not before she recovers.
Not before she feels better.
Before she can stop them.
My hands tightened around the phone.
The person who was supposed to be celebrating her wedding was helping plan the theft of my home.
"Maren?"
Adrian's voice pulled me back.
"I'm here."
"You don't have to face this alone."
I looked at the messages.
For years, I had protected Liora because I thought she needed me.
Now I realized she needed me because I always allowed her to take from me.
That was different.
"Where is she now?"

"Preparing for the wedding."
I laughed quietly.
A wedding built on lies.
A celebration paid for with betrayal.
Then an idea formed.
"Adrian."
"Yes?"
"I want to go."
"Go where?"
"The wedding."
There was silence.
"Maren, you're recovering."
"I know."
"You just had major surgery."
"I know."
"You don't have to prove anything."
I looked at the hospital room.
The bed.
The machines.
The weakness.
Then I looked at the documents on my phone.
"They think I'm broken."
Adrian didn't answer.
"They think because I can't walk normally yet, I can't fight."
A pause.
Then he understood.
"You want them to see you."
"Yes."
"Why?"
I looked at the screen one more time.
Because I finally understood something.
My family had spent years making decisions about my life without me.
They decided what I should give.
What I should forgive.
What I should accept.
The wedding was going to be their biggest victory.
Unless I showed up.
"Because they planned a celebration for the day they thought they won."
I took a deep breath.
"And I want to be there when they realize they didn't."
Later that afternoon, Evelyn called with an update.
"The legal team has prepared everything."
"Good."
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
"The buyer of your condo is attending the wedding."
I already knew the answer.
"Daniel Cross."
"Yes."
I smiled slightly.
"Perfect."
Evelyn sounded concerned.
"Maren, what are you planning?"
I looked out the hospital window.
For the first time in years, I wasn't reacting to my family's choices.
I was making my own.
"I'm going to give them the one thing they never expected."
"What?"
"Proof."
The wedding was three weeks away.
They thought it would be the beginning of Liora's perfect life.
They thought I would stay silent.
They thought my surgery made me powerless.
They forgot one thing.
I built my entire life from nothing.
And someone who knows how to build...
also knows how to rebuild.
The day of the wedding, they would see me walk through those doors.
Not as the sister who paid for everything.
May you like
Not as the daughter they could manipulate.
But as the person they should have never betrayed.
