Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF SAVING ME

The helicopter landed forty minutes later on a private airstrip.
Salvatore dragged me into a hangar.
My wrists were tied.
My face hurt.
My patience was gone.
“I really don't understand why every man in your world thinks hitting women makes him intimidating.”
He glared.
“Your mother talked too much too.”
“Good.”
He slapped me again.
I smiled through the pain.
“You're proving my point.”
Salvatore's face twisted.
He wasn't calm anymore.
That mattered.
Angry people made mistakes.
Inside the hangar stood computers and satellite equipment.
The digital archive.
Michael's true insurance policy.
Salvatore inserted the brass key into a custom reader.
A screen lit up.
PASSWORD REQUIRED.
He turned toward me.
“What phrase did Michael leave you?”
“I don't know.”
“Wrong answer.”
“I met my father's handwriting twelve hours ago.”
Salvatore grabbed my hair.
“Think.”
I remembered the letter.
A small house.
A loud kitchen.
Sunday mornings.
Bicycle rides.
Blood is an accident.
Character is a choice.
Maybe the phrase was there.
Salvatore shoved me toward the keyboard.
“Type it.”
I typed:
CHARACTER IS A CHOICE
ACCESS DENIED.
Salvatore cursed.
Again.
BLOOD IS AN ACCIDENT
Denied.
Then I remembered something else.
My mother had a phrase she said whenever I was frightened.
Be brave enough to stay kind.
She said it after school bullies.
After losing her job.
The night before she died.
I typed:
STAY KIND
The screen changed.
ACCESS GRANTED.
Salvatore laughed.
I felt sick.
Folders opened.
Financial records.
Videos.
Audio.
Names.
Decades of evidence.
Enough to destroy criminal networks, political careers, judges, police chiefs.
Salvatore looked like a starving man seeing food.
“My empire.”
“No.”
I stared at the screen.
“My father's evidence.”
He began copying files.
I watched the percentage.
4%.
8%.
12%.
“Why are you doing this?” I asked.
“To survive.”
“You're seventy-two.”
He looked offended.
“I intend to be eighty.”
“All this death for eight more years?”
He laughed.
“You think small.”
“Maybe.”
I looked around the empty hangar.
“You have money. Men. Houses.”
I met his eyes.
“And nobody loves you enough to sit beside you without being paid.”
His smile vanished.
Good.
The upload reached 31%.
Then gunfire sounded outside.
Salvatore smiled.
“Dante.”
My heartbeat jumped.
More shots.
Salvatore grabbed me.
“Your rescue arrives.”
The doors exploded inward.
Marco entered first.
Dante behind him.
His shoulder was bandaged.
His face was terrifying.
Salvatore placed the gun against my head.
“Stop.”
Dante stopped.
Marco raised his weapon.
“Drop it.”
“You first.”
Dante slowly lowered his pistol.
“Let her go.”
“Always the women.”
Salvatore laughed.
“Your father ruined himself protecting Sofia. Michael ruined himself protecting Elizabeth.”
He pressed the gun harder.
“And now you came bleeding across three counties for a waitress.”
Dante's eyes stayed on mine.
“She isn't a waitress.”
I almost laughed.
“Technically I still am.”
“Not helping, Cara.”
Even Marco smiled briefly.
Salvatore looked between us.
“Oh.”
His expression became delighted.
“This is worse than I thought.”
Dante's face hardened.
“Don't.”
“You love her.”
Silence.
My heart forgot its job.
Dante said nothing.
Salvatore laughed.
“You do.”
Vanessa's words came back.
Stay near him.
Maybe she had seen it before I had.
I looked at Dante.
“This is a really bad time.”
“I agree.”
Salvatore shouted, “Enough!”
The upload hit 67%.
I saw the progress bar.
An idea formed.
“Dante.”
His eyes met mine.
“My father said blood is an accident.”
“I know.”
“Finish it.”
“Character is a choice.”
I smiled.
Then slammed my heel onto Salvatore's foot.
He fired.
Dante moved.
The bullet missed my head by inches.
Marco shot Salvatore in the shoulder.
I dropped.
Dante reached me.
Salvatore crawled toward the computer.
Upload 91%.
He screamed.
“No!”
He reached the keyboard.
Carlo stepped into the hangar.
Gun in hand.
Salvatore froze.
Carlo looked at him.
“For Michael.”
Salvatore laughed weakly.
“You don't have the stomach.”
Carlo raised the weapon.
Then stopped.
My father's words had infected all of us.
Character is a choice.
Carlo lowered the gun.
“You're right.”
Salvatore smiled.
Then Carlo continued.
“I'll let the courts bury you instead.”
Police sirens approached.
Federal vehicles.
Dozens.
Dante looked at Marco.
“You called them?”
Marco shook his head.
I looked at the computer.
Upload 100%.
Then the screen changed.
AUTOMATIC DISTRIBUTION COMPLETE.
I stared.
“What did I do?”
Carlo began laughing.
Michael hadn't stored the files for someone to inherit.
He had built a dead man's switch.
Entering the correct phrase distributed the archive.
To federal investigators.
Journalists.
Attorneys.
Salvatore screamed.
“No!”
Every secret he'd killed for was now outside his control.
Police entered.
Dante's men lowered their weapons.
Salvatore was arrested.
So was Carlo.
He didn't resist.
He looked at me as officers approached.
“I have done things I should answer for.”
I swallowed.
“Will I see you again?”
He smiled sadly.
“If you want.”
“I don't know yet.”
“Fair.”
They took him away.
Dante watched federal agents seize the equipment.
“This changes everything.”
“For you?”
“For both families.”
“Is that bad?”
He looked at me.
“For men who enjoyed the old ways.”
“And for you?”
Dante took a long breath.
“Maybe it's time the old ways ended.”
I stared.
“The most powerful mafia boss on the East Coast is retiring?”
“Let's not get dramatic.”
I laughed for the first time in days.
Then I touched my bruised cheek.
Dante's expression hardened.
“Does it hurt?”
“Yes.”
“I'm sorry.”
“You didn't hit me.”
“I brought this world into your life.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“It was already there.”
That was the strangest truth.
My mother had spent years hiding my history.
But history had found me.
Dante looked toward the rising sun beyond the hangar.
“What happens now?”
“I'd like to sleep for three days.”
“Reasonable.”
“And then?”
I thought about my apartment.
Bellini's.
The life I'd had.
Could I return?
Did I want to?
Dante spoke quietly.
“You don't owe me anything.”
“I know.”
“You saved my life.”
“Several times, technically.”
“Yes.”
“I may invoice you.”
“I'll have accounting prepare something.”
I smiled.
Then his expression became serious.
“Cara.”
“What?”
“If you want to walk away when this ends, my people will make certain no one follows you.”
I understood what he was doing.
Opening the door.
Giving me what nobody in his world seemed willing to give anyone.
A choice.
“What if I don't want to walk away?”
His eyes changed.
“Then don't.”
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then Vanessa entered the hangar.
Of course.
She looked at us.
Then groaned.
“Oh, for God's sake.”
I stepped away from Dante.
“Nothing happened.”
“That's actually worse.”
Dante glared.
“Vanessa.”
She held up her hands.
“We have bigger problems.”
“What?”
She handed him a phone.
Breaking news.
Federal investigators had begun raids across five states.
Judges arrested.
Police commanders suspended.
Accounts frozen.
Then I saw another headline.
MORETTI CRIME BOSS LINKED TO MASSIVE CORRUPTION ARCHIVE.
Dante stared.
“There it is.”
His empire was collapsing in real time.
I looked at him.
“Are you afraid?”
He thought about it.
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised me.
Vanessa looked at us.
“There is one more problem.”
“What?”
She held up another report.
“Someone extracted one file before the archive distributed.”
Dante frowned.
“Which one?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“The file named Cara.”
My stomach dropped.
“What was in it?”
“We don't know.”
“Who took it?”
She showed us a security image from the hangar.
Captured fifteen minutes before Salvatore arrived.
A man entering through the rear door.
Evan Reese.
My ex-boyfriend.
The man who sold my schedule.
The man I thought was safely in Moretti custody.
Dante's face hardened.
“How did he get out?”
Marco stared at the image.
“He had help.”
I felt sick.
Evan wasn't running from this world.
He was deeper inside it than any of us realized.
May you like
And whatever my father had hidden in the file named after me—
Evan now had it.
