Chapter 16 - Amy’s Voice

Amy testified for two days.

She described Teresa’s arrival after Frederick’s birth.

The helpful meals.

The offers to manage bills.

The gradual criticism.

The missing phone.

The locked pantry.

The forged messages.

The nights in the nursery.

The dizziness after meals.

The threats of divorce and custody.

She spoke without exaggeration.

That made the details more powerful.

When Bennett displayed a photograph of the plastic stool beside the kitchen sink, Amy looked at it for a long time.

“Where was Frederick during the party?” Bennett asked.

“In my arms.”

“What was his temperature?”

“I didn’t have a thermometer.”

“How did he feel?”

“Like I was holding a heater.”

“Did you request medical care?”

“Yes.”

“What did Teresa say?”

“That I wanted attention.”

“Were you permitted to stop washing dishes?”

“No.”

“What had you eaten that day?”

“A piece of bread.”

“Why only bread?”

“The pantry was locked.”

A juror wiped her eyes.

Bennett played the hidden recording.

Teresa’s voice filled the courtroom.

After we establish neglect, she can disappear.

People believe young mothers run away all the time.

Peter asked whether she meant killing Amy.

Teresa responded that she did not care which method he chose.

For the first time during the trial, Teresa reacted.

She shook her head and whispered to Price.

The judge ordered her to remain silent.

Bennett asked Amy why she made the recording.

“I needed proof that I wasn’t imagining what was happening.”

“Why did you hide the file?”

“Because Teresa searched my phone.”

“Why didn’t you immediately send it to your husband?”

“The phone had no service.”

“Why didn’t you tell him in person?”

Amy looked toward me.

“Because Teresa convinced me he had chosen her.”

The defense began cross-examination after lunch.

Wallace Price approached with a calm, sympathetic expression.

“Mrs. Bradley, motherhood is exhausting, isn’t it?”

“Yes.”

“You experienced anxiety after Frederick’s birth?”

“Yes.”

“You sometimes cried?”

“Yes.”

“You sometimes forgot household tasks?”

“Yes.”

Price smiled slightly.

“Then Teresa’s concerns were not entirely invented.”

Amy did not hesitate.

“Being tired did not give her the right to imprison me.”

“Imprison is a dramatic word.”

“She took my phone, my keys, my money, and my access to food.”

“Did she lock the exterior doors?”

“No.”

“So you could have walked outside.”

“Without shoes, money, a phone, transportation, or food for my child.”

“But physically, you could have left.”

Amy looked toward the jury.

“A cage does not stop being a cage because one wall is made of fear.”

Price’s smile disappeared.

He suggested Amy resented Teresa.

Amy agreed.

He suggested she wanted financial compensation.

Amy said no civil lawsuit had been filed.

He suggested she manipulated me into turning against my family.

Amy answered quietly.

“They turned against us when they agreed to use my sick baby as evidence.”

Price displayed photographs of the messy house.

“Is this your kitchen?”

“Yes.”

“Would you describe it as clean?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because Teresa emptied the cabinets before taking the picture.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes.”

Price froze.

Bennett introduced a security clip recovered from an interior camera Teresa believed had stopped working.

The video showed Betsy and Teresa pouring cereal onto the floor, opening drawers, and stacking dirty dishes before photographing the room.

Betsy’s attorney placed both hands over his face.

The defense had not known the clip existed.

Police recovered it from a cloud archive only days before trial.

In the video, Betsy laughed.

“Connor will think she’s an animal.”

Teresa answered, “Connor thinks what I teach him to think.”

The judge allowed the evidence.

Price ended his cross-examination early.

I testified next.

I admitted every mistake.

Sending money without reviewing expenses.

Accepting short phone calls.

Trusting Teresa automatically.

Failing to notice Amy’s weight loss.

Allowing my mother to control the office.

The defense expected denial.

I gave them none.

“Yes,” I said, “I failed to see what was happening.”

Price stepped closer.

“Then you share responsibility.”

“I share responsibility for not stopping it sooner.”

“Exactly.”

“But Teresa is responsible for doing it.”

Price asked whether Amy had influenced my testimony.

“No.”

“Has she asked you to cut contact with your family?”

“No.”

“Then why have you?”

“Because they planned to steal my home, frame my wife, take my son, and place me inside a collapsing building.”

A few jurors looked toward the defense table.

Price returned to his seat.

Teresa chose to testify against her attorney’s advice.
