Chapter 14 - Emma

We found Emma two days later.

She was eleven.

She lived with a retired couple in Vermont.

They had raised her lovingly.

They had never known the truth.

When I arrived, Emma stood on the porch.

She looked like her mother.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same stubborn tilt of the chin.

I stopped several feet away.

“Hi.”

She studied me.

“Are you my dad?”

“Yes.”

“Are you dangerous?”

The question broke my heart.

“I can be.”

She frowned.

“But not to me?”

“Never.”

She looked at Sophie.

Then Caleb.

Then Noah.

“Those are my siblings?”

Sophie nodded.

Emma smiled.

“I always wondered.”

We spent the afternoon together.

No dramatic speeches.

No forced hugs.

Just questions.

School.

Favorite foods.

Books.

Music.

Little things.

Things I had missed.

Years.

Entire years.

That night, Emma asked me:

“Why did Mom leave?”

I told her the truth.

“She was trying to protect us.”

Emma looked at me.

“Did she succeed?”

I looked at my children.

“Yes.”

Then my wife entered.

Emma ran to her.

Mother and daughter held each other.

I stood in the doorway.

For the first time, my house felt like a home.

But three weeks later, Vanessa's attorney contacted me.

She wanted to speak.

I almost refused.

Then I heard the message.

“There is something Vanessa discovered about your father's final account.”

I agreed.

Vanessa was in custody.

She looked different.

Smaller.

Human.

She handed me a letter.

“Your father left this for you.”

I opened it.

One sentence was written inside.

The Circle was never mine. I inherited it.

Below it was a list of names.

Judges.

Police chiefs.

Politicians.

Business leaders.

People I knew.

People I trusted.

At the bottom was one name.

Daniel Cross.

My attorney.

I looked up.

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“Your lawyer has been working for them since before your wife disappeared.”
