Chapter 1 - The Man Beneath the Beard

The terrace went silent.

Not the ordinary silence that came after an awkward accident.

This was different.

It was the silence of people suddenly realizing that the person standing in front of them was someone they had spent years learning to fear.

I slowly removed the fake beard.

Then the baseball cap.

My gray-streaked hair fell forward.

Vanessa stared at me.

For three seconds, she didn't breathe.

Her hand was still raised.

The same hand that had been meant for my daughter.

“S-Sir…”

One of the donors whispered my name.

“Evan Whitaker.”

Another man stepped backward.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

It shattered against the marble.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at Sophie.

Then at Grace, whose cheek was already swelling from the slap.

Finally, I looked at my son.

Caleb was hiding behind his sister, clutching that ridiculous brown rabbit Vanessa hated so much.

I had spent eleven days watching my children learn fear.

Now I understood exactly who had taught them.

I walked toward Vanessa.

She tried to recover her composure.

“Evan, darling…”

“Don't.”

One word.

She stopped.

“I can explain.”

“You have eleven days.”

Her face tightened.

“What?”

“Eleven days,” I repeated. “That's how long I've been here.”

The color drained from her face.

“You knew?”

“I watched.”

Her eyes moved toward the servants.

Several immediately looked down.

“You lied to me.”

“No.”

“You threatened my children.”

“No.”

“You struck Grace.”

“She interfered.”

I smiled without humor.

“She protected my daughter.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Sophie was misbehaving.”

My daughter flinched.

That single movement told me everything.

I turned toward her.

“Sophie.”

She looked at me cautiously.

“Come here.”

She didn't move.

My heart cracked.

“It's okay.”

Still nothing.

I lowered myself until we were eye to eye.

“Daddy isn't angry with you.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

She ran into my arms.

I caught her.

She buried her face against my chest.

“I didn't lie,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“Vanessa said you'd send us away.”

“I would never send you away.”

She began crying.

Real crying.

The kind children save for when they finally feel safe.

I held her tighter.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered, “This is ridiculous.”

I slowly looked over my shoulder.

“What's ridiculous?”

She froze.

“The children have become spoiled. I've been trying to discipline them.”

“You've been terrorizing them.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You're taking their side over mine?”

“They're seven and three.”

“And I'm your fiancée.”

“Not anymore.”

A gasp moved through the crowd.

Vanessa stared at me.

“You can't mean that.”

“I do.”

She stepped closer.

“Evan, think carefully.”

I stood.

“You're giving me a warning?”

She lowered her voice.

“You don't know what I've sacrificed for you.”

“No.”

I looked at Grace.

“Get the children inside.”

Grace nodded.

Then Sophie grabbed my sleeve.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Can I take Rabbit?”

I glanced at Vanessa.

Her jaw tightened.

“Take Rabbit.”

Sophie hugged the stuffed animal.

Grace led both children away.

Only then did I turn back to Vanessa.

“You have ten minutes to leave this property.”

She laughed nervously.

“You're making a mistake.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“The mistake was believing I wouldn't come home.”

Her smile disappeared.

“You'll regret humiliating me.”

“Maybe.”

I leaned toward her.

“But you'll regret touching my daughter.”

Her face went pale.

Then my phone rang.

I answered.

My attorney's voice came through.

“Evan, we have another problem.”

“What?”

“The trust accounts were accessed last night.”

My eyes narrowed.

“By whom?”

There was a pause.

“Your authorization code.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

May you like

And suddenly, I knew the slap wasn't the biggest thing I had uncovered.

Not even close.
