CHAPTER 5 — The Man Everyone Buried

CHAPTER 5 — The Man Everyone Buried

Emma barely slept.

The photograph remained on her desk long after midnight.

Captain Daniel Brooks.

A soldier officially declared dead nine years ago.

A man whose funeral she had attended.

A name engraved on a memorial wall.

Yet somehow, someone had used his military credentials to access highly classified files only hours earlier.

Nothing about it made sense.

At 0600, Emma walked into the secure operations center.

General Marcus Caldwell was already waiting with Detective Laura Benson and two intelligence analysts.

The atmosphere was tense.

A large digital map covered the main screen.

Red markers stretched across five states.

"We traced the unauthorized access," one analyst said.

"It originated from three different servers."

Emma crossed her arms.

"Which one is real?"

The analyst shook his head.

"None of them."

General Caldwell stepped forward.

"Whoever did this wanted us chasing ghosts."

Emma looked back at Daniel's photograph.

"Or someone wants us to believe ghosts exist."

Hundreds of miles away, Victor Langford watched the morning news from the top floor of his corporate headquarters.

Every headline focused on Melissa Grant's arrest.

Financial fraud.

Identity theft.

Forgery.

Exactly as planned.

He muted the television.

"They're still looking at the wrong person."

A young assistant entered the office.

"Sir, the military has increased security around Colonel Carter."

Victor smiled calmly.

"They should."

The assistant hesitated.

"And Mr. Whitmore?"

Victor looked out over the city skyline.

"He's becoming unpredictable."

"What should we do?"

"Nothing."

Victor picked up a crystal chess piece from his desk.

"A desperate man usually makes his own mistakes."

Ryan returned to work for the first time since the investigation began.

The silence inside the office was unbearable.

Some coworkers looked away.

Others whispered behind his back.

He couldn't blame them.

His phone buzzed.

It was a text from Patricia.

Emma agreed to let me visit the twins again next week.

Ryan smiled for the first time in days.

Then another message arrived.

An unknown number.

If you want the truth about Melissa, come alone. Tonight. Eight o'clock. Riverside Warehouse 14.

He stared at the screen.

No signature.

No explanation.

Only an address.

Emma spent the afternoon reviewing old mission reports.

One detail kept bothering her.

Daniel Brooks had never worked in financial intelligence.

If someone was impersonating him, there had to be another reason.

Detective Benson entered carrying another folder.

"We found something."

Emma looked up.

"What?"

"A storage locker rented under a fake identity."

"What was inside?"

Benson opened the folder.

Military uniforms.

Old passports.

Burner phones.

Several boxes of paper records.

Emma turned another page.

Then stopped.

There was a family photograph.

Ryan.

Patricia.

Harold.

Emma.

The twins had not yet been born.

Someone had been watching the Whitmore family long before the foreclosure.

"Why would anyone care about us?"

Benson answered honestly.

"I don't think they cared about the Whitmores."

She pointed toward Emma.

"I think they cared about you."

That evening, Ryan drove toward Warehouse 14.

Rain hammered the windshield.

The abandoned industrial district looked deserted.

He parked beneath a broken streetlight.

The warehouse door stood slightly open.

"Hello?"

No answer.

He stepped inside.

Dust covered the concrete floor.

Old shipping containers lined the walls.

Then a voice echoed through the darkness.

"You actually came."

Ryan turned.

A woman stepped into the light.

Melissa.

She looked exhausted.

Gone were the expensive clothes and perfect makeup.

She wore a plain gray jacket.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

"You escaped?"

She shook her head.

"I was released on bond."

Ryan remained near the entrance.

"You lied to me for over a year."

"I know."

"You destroyed my marriage."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I never meant for it to go this far."

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"Really?"

Melissa slowly reached into her pocket.

Ryan instinctively stepped back.

Instead of a weapon...

She pulled out a small flash drive.

"They're coming for Emma."

Ryan frowned.

"Who?"

"I don't know their real names."

"Then why should I believe you?"

"Because I was only hired to play a role."

His expression changed.

"Hired?"

"They needed someone close to your family."

Melissa looked around nervously.

"They told me Emma would never notice."

"But she did."

"They underestimated her."

Ryan stared at the flash drive.

"What's on it?"

"Everything I managed to copy before they erased the servers."

Before Ryan could answer...

Headlights swept across the warehouse windows.

Melissa's face turned white.

"They found me."

Three black SUVs stopped outside.

Doors flew open.

Several masked men rushed toward the building.

"Run!" Melissa shouted.

Ryan grabbed her arm.

"This way!"

They sprinted deeper into the warehouse.

Gunshots shattered old windows behind them.

Concrete exploded beside their feet.

Ryan pushed Melissa behind a steel container.

"Stay down!"

Another bullet ricocheted across the floor.

Outside, tires screeched.

At the same moment, Emma's secure phone rang.

General Caldwell spoke urgently.

"Colonel, we've intercepted an emergency call."

"What happened?"

"Ryan Whitmore has walked into an ambush."

Emma didn't hesitate.

"Location?"

"Warehouse 14."

Emma grabbed her keys.

"I'm going."

"Military police are already en route."

"They won't get there fast enough."

She raced toward the parking garage.

Every instinct told her the trap wasn't really for Ryan.

It was for whoever tried to save him.

As her vehicle accelerated into the storm, lightning illuminated the highway ahead.

Miles away, inside the abandoned warehouse, Ryan held the flash drive tightly while shielding Melissa behind a steel support beam.

The attackers spread out with disciplined precision.

They weren't common criminals.

They moved like trained professionals.

One of them stepped into the center aisle and spoke calmly.

"Colonel Carter always protects people."

He smiled beneath his black mask.

May you like

"And tonight..."

"We're counting on it."
