Chapter 1 - THE LAST MOVE

Samuel's fingers trembled as they hovered over the chessboard.

Adrian noticed.

He noticed everything.

He had spent most of his adult life learning to read danger in tiny movements: a hand reaching inside a jacket, a glance toward an exit, a pause before someone answered a question.

But Samuel Caruso's trembling hand didn't frighten him.

It did something worse.

It made him feel helpless.

"You have one move left," Samuel whispered.

Adrian looked at the chessboard.

"You're dying."

Samuel smiled faintly.

"That wasn't the question."

Adrian leaned back.

"You summoned me here after midnight to talk about chess?"

"No."

Samuel pushed a small black pawn forward.

Adrian stared at the board.

"You cheated."

"I taught you to cheat."

A faint smile touched Adrian's mouth.

It disappeared quickly.

Samuel's eyes moved toward the bedroom door.

"Rosa doesn't know."

"Know what?"

"Who I really worked for."

Adrian's expression changed.

For years, Samuel had operated quietly around the edges of Adrian's organization. He restored furniture for wealthy clients, transported antiques, handled certain accounts, and occasionally provided information.

But he had never wanted Rosa anywhere near that world.

"She thinks I repaired furniture."

"You did."

"Among other things."

Samuel coughed.

Adrian waited until the coughing stopped.

"Tell me."

Samuel looked directly at him.

"My daughter is about to inherit something."

Adrian frowned.

"Money?"

"No."

"Property?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Samuel reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a sealed envelope.

Adrian took it.

The name on the front was handwritten.

ROSA CARUSO.

"What is this?"

"My final insurance policy."

Adrian opened his mouth.

Samuel stopped him.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Tell her everything."

"Samuel—"

"Listen to me."

His voice was suddenly stronger.

Adrian leaned forward.

"There are men who believe Rosa is worthless because she knows nothing about our world. They are wrong."

"Who?"

"Matthew Cole."

Silence filled the room.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"What does Matthew want with my business?"

"Not your business."

Samuel looked toward the ceiling.

"He wants what your father left behind."

Adrian stood.

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

Samuel's eyes hardened.

"Your father didn't leave you an empire."

He paused.

"He left you a war."

Before Adrian could answer, the bedroom door opened.

Rosa stood there.

Her hair was messy from sleep.

She wore an oversized gray sweatshirt and socks.

Her eyes moved from Adrian to her father.

"What war?"

Neither man answered.

Rosa stepped inside.

"Dad?"

Samuel looked at Adrian.

Adrian understood.

The final move had begun.

The next morning, Rosa discovered her father's will.

She expected medical debts.

The workshop.

A small savings account.

Maybe the old truck.

She didn't expect a legal clause requiring her to meet Adrian Valenti.

She certainly didn't expect the words:

"My daughter shall receive the remainder of my estate only after entering into a six-month marriage arrangement with Adrian Valenti."

Rosa read the paragraph three times.

Then she laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

It was the kind of laugh people made when reality became too absurd to process.

"This is a joke."

The attorney shook his head.

"No."

"My father wanted me to marry him?"

"Yes."

"The Adrian Valenti?"

The attorney nodded.

"The one people are afraid to say no to?"

Another nod.

Rosa pushed the papers away.

"Absolutely not."

Then the attorney placed another document on the table.

Rosa's face changed.

It contained her father's signature.

Below it was a handwritten note.

Rosa,

If you are reading this, I failed to tell you the truth because telling you would have put you in danger.

Adrian is not the man you think he is. Neither am I.

Trust him when you have no one else left to trust.

And whatever happens, do not let Matthew Cole get the black ledger.

Rosa's fingers went cold.

She looked up.

"What black ledger?"

The attorney swallowed.

"I don't know."

Rosa stood.

"I want to see Adrian."

At six that evening, she entered his penthouse.

Rain followed her through the doorway.

She held the folder against her chest.

"My father said you needed a wife."

Adrian stared at her.

"He was right."

She blinked.

"You agreed to this?"

"No."

"Then why are you acting like this is normal?"

"It isn't."

"Good."

She stepped farther inside.

"I'm not marrying you."

Adrian walked toward her.

Rosa instinctively stepped backward.

He stopped.

He didn't touch her.

He simply looked at her.

"I don't want to marry you either."

Her eyebrows lifted.

"Excellent."

"Unfortunately, your father's will isn't the only problem."

"What else?"

Adrian's voice lowered.

"Someone is trying to kill you."

Rosa went completely still.

"Excuse me?"

"Your father's death wasn't entirely natural."

The folder slipped from her fingers.

Papers scattered across the marble.

Adrian crouched and gathered them.

Rosa stared at him.

"My father died from lung disease."

"That's what the doctors believe."

"And you?"

Adrian looked into her eyes.

"I believe someone helped him die."

Rosa's heart hammered.

Then Adrian added the words that shattered everything.

"Your father left something hidden in your workshop."

May you like

"What?"

"The black ledger."
