Chapter 8 - VICTORIA'S CONFESSION

Victoria came to the secure house that evening.
She looked different.
No designer clothes.
No jewelry.
No makeup.
Just my sister.
The girl I remembered before money changed everything.
“I want to tell you something.”
I sat across from her.
“Then tell me.”
She took a deep breath.
“I knew about the money.”
“I know.”
“I knew Mom was taking it.”
“I know.”
“I didn't know about Elena.”
I looked at her.
“You knew she was living in the shed.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Then you knew.”
She looked down.
“I thought Mom would eventually let her back inside.”
“Why didn't you stop her?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Mom?”
“Of everyone.”
She reached into her purse.
“I kept something.”
She placed a flash drive on the table.
“What is it?”
“Messages.”
“From whom?”
“Richard.”
I took it.
Daniel examined the files.
There were hundreds of messages.
Instructions.
Payments.
Threats.
Photographs.
Everything.
Then we found the conversation that changed everything.
Richard had written:
Keep Julian overseas.
Another message:
If he returns, the trust becomes active.
Then:
Make sure his wife never reaches him.
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
If necessary, make the boy legally dependent on Evelyn.
My hands shook.
Victoria began crying.
“I didn't write those.”
“I know.”
“I was terrified.”
“Why give them to me now?”
She looked at me.
“Because I watched Julian eat crumbs yesterday.”
She wiped her tears.
“And I realized I couldn't live with myself anymore.”
I stood.
“You're going to testify.”
She nodded.
“I will.”
My mother entered the room.
She had heard everything.
“You don't know what you're doing.”
Victoria turned.
“Yes, Mom.”
My mother stared at her.
“After everything I did for you?”
Victoria laughed through tears.
“You did everything for yourself.”
My mother slapped her.
I caught her wrist.
“Never touch her again.”
My mother stared at me.
For the first time, I didn't see authority in her eyes.
Only defeat.
The next morning, Victoria gave a formal statement.
Then the investigators found something else.
A second trust.
Created by my father.
This one was not financial.
It contained evidence.
He had anticipated his murder.
He had recorded conversations with Richard Black.
And in one recording, Richard admitted everything.
Including the plan to manipulate my mother.
Including the forged documents.
Including the attempt to make me legally dead.
But there was one sentence that frightened me.
Richard said:
“If Julian comes home, Evelyn knows what happens.”
My mother had known.
But she hadn't known everything.
There was another person above Richard.
Someone who had been giving orders.

And when the investigators identified that person...
I couldn't believe the name.
