Chapter 11 - THE LAST CONDITION

The trust documents were reviewed by attorneys, investigators, and financial experts.
The condition was simple.
I had to prove that the people responsible for the fraud had been held accountable.
Not punished personally.
Accountable legally.
That meant testimony.
Court.
Evidence.
And patience.
I had none.
I wanted everything fixed immediately.
But life didn't work that way.
Elena reminded me.
“You spent five years waiting.”
I looked at her.
“I don't want to wait anymore.”
“You don't have to.”
She touched my hand.
“You just have to stop running.”
That night, Julian asked me a question.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are we going back to the big house?”
I hesitated.
“Do you want to?”
He thought about it.
“No.”
“Why?”
“It's scary.”
My heart broke.
The mansion I had built for my family had become a symbol of fear.
So I made a decision.
“We'll make a new home.”
Julian smiled.
“With a dog?”
I laughed.
“With a dog.”
For the first time, Elena smiled genuinely.
Then Daniel arrived.
“The trust condition has been satisfied.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“The court accepted the evidence.”
“And the money?”
“Legally yours.”
Twenty-six million dollars.
My father had left me a fortune.
But suddenly, I didn't care.
I had my wife.
I had my son.
That was enough.
Until Daniel added:
“There is one more thing.”
I looked at him.
“Your father left a letter for Elena.”
My wife froze.
“For me?”
“Yes.”
She opened it.
Her eyes filled with tears as she read.
Then she handed it to me.
The letter said:
Elena,
If Julian ever fails you, don't let my family's name make you believe you're trapped.
You deserve better.
Protect my grandson.
And protect yourself.
I looked at my wife.
She cried.
“I never knew he knew me.”
“He knew.”
Then she whispered:
“I wish he'd lived.”
“So do I.”
We held each other.
Outside, the sun rose.
For the first time in years, it felt like morning instead of another beginning of survival.
But Evelyn still had to face court.
And Victoria had to face the consequences of her choices.

The next hearing was scheduled for Monday.
And my mother had one final secret to reveal.
