Chapter 3 - The Company He Thought Was His

The following morning, Preston arrived at Hale Strategic Capital expecting chaos.

Instead, everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

His assistant stood beside the reception desk.

"Mr. Hale."

"What's going on?"

"Your access card isn't working."

Preston frowned.

"Try again."

She did.

The machine flashed red.

ACCESS DENIED.

"Call IT."

"They're expecting you upstairs."

"Good."

He walked toward the elevator.

The doors opened.

Two security officers stood inside.

"Mr. Hale."

"Why are you here?"

"We were instructed to escort you."

"By whom?"

One officer looked uncomfortable.

"Ms. Sinclair."

Preston's stomach dropped.

"I don't need an escort."

"I'm afraid you do."

The elevator climbed.

When the doors opened on the executive floor, Preston stepped into a room filled with lawyers.

His CFO was there.

His board chair was there.

And at the head of the table sat Vivienne.

She wore a navy suit.

No diamonds.

No dramatic gown.

Just quiet authority.

Preston stared.

"You've got to be kidding me."

Vivienne gestured toward a chair.

"Sit."

"This is my company."

"No."

He looked around.

"My name is on the building."

"Your name is on your office door."

"Same thing."

"Not remotely."

A lawyer slid a folder across the table.

Preston opened it.

His hands began to shake.

The documents showed a controlling interest in Hale Strategic Capital.

Owned by Sinclair Holdings.

Transferred three years earlier.

Preston looked up.

"You bought my company?"

"I bought the debt."

"What?"

"You were going bankrupt."

He stared.

"That's impossible."

"You were six weeks from collapse."

She turned to the CFO.

"Would you like to explain?"

The CFO cleared his throat.

"Mr. Hale, Sinclair Holdings provided emergency capital."

"You never told me."

"You ordered us not to disclose the investor."

Preston looked at Vivienne.

"You knew."

"I knew everything."

His voice dropped.

"Why save me?"

Vivienne looked at him for a long moment.

"Because I loved you."

The room became silent.

She continued.

"I thought money could give you time to become the man you claimed you wanted to be."

Preston swallowed.

"And instead?"

"You became obsessed with appearing rich."

He looked down.

The lawyer opened another folder.

"There's more."

Inside were photographs.

Preston at restaurants with Tiffany.

Preston entering the SoHo apartment.

Preston signing corporate expense reports.

Preston transferring money.

His face hardened.

"You had me followed."

"No."

Vivienne shook her head.

"Your own mistakes followed you."

The board chair spoke.

"Mr. Hale, effective immediately, you're suspended from executive authority."

"What?"

"Pending investigation."

"This is my company!"

The board chair looked at him.

"No. It's hers."

Preston turned to Vivienne.

"You can't do this to me."

"I already did."

His voice became desperate.

"Vivienne, please."

She didn't respond.

He stepped closer.

"I made mistakes."

"You made choices."

"I can fix them."

"You had seven months."

"I didn't know."

"That's the problem."

Tiffany suddenly entered the room.

She was crying.

"Preston."

He turned.

"What are you doing here?"

"I came to talk to Vivienne."

"About what?"

Tiffany looked at Vivienne.

"I made mistakes too."

Vivienne nodded.

"I know."

Tiffany's voice shook.

"Please don't destroy my career."

Vivienne studied her.

"I'm not interested in destroying your career."

Tiffany exhaled.

"I'll return everything."

"Everything?"

"The jewelry. The money. The apartment."

Vivienne nodded.

"Good."

Tiffany looked relieved.

Then Vivienne added,

"But the evidence has already been sent to the authorities."

Tiffany froze.

"What?"

"For fraudulent expense reporting."

"I didn't know!"

"That will be for investigators to determine."

Tiffany turned to Preston.

"You said it was fine!"

Preston stared at her.

"You told me accounting approved it."

"You told me Vivienne would never know!"

The room fell silent.

Preston slowly closed his eyes.

Their affair had just collapsed into something much uglier.

Vivienne stood.

"This meeting is over."

Preston looked at her.

"You're really doing this?"

She paused.

"I'm not doing anything to you, Preston."

She looked him directly in the eyes.

"I'm finally doing something for myself."

Then she walked out.

May you like

For the first time, Preston understood that losing his wife wasn't the worst thing that could happen.

Losing her protection was.
